Seven Champions

Results from the 2013 FFG World Championship Weekend

After a weekend full of games and excitement, the 2013 FFG World Championship Weekend has come to a close.

From Thursday through Sunday, the Fantasy Flight Games Center was packed with players from more than half a dozen nations, all of whom came to take their best shots at the World Championships for their favorite games. The weekend’s tournaments featured some of the largest LCG® and X-Wing crowds on record, and when all was said and done, seven players emerged victorious as the World Champions of six different games.

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

Álvaro Rodriguez, the Spanish National Champion, rode victorious through a full day of challenging tilts to win the title of 2013 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Joust World Champion.

Ryan Jones also proved his mettle in the only game that matters. He deftly maneuvered his way to the Iron Throne in the Melee World Championship, and added a strong Joust performance to claim the twin titles of 2013 A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Melee and Overall World Champion.

Android: Netrunner

Jens Erickson successfully used his ice and icebreakers to wrest control of the network from his opponents in the Android: Netrunner World Championship, claiming the title of 2013 World Champion.

Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game

Jeremy Zwirn added a third World Championship to his collection. The 2012 World Champion for both Android: Netrunner and Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game delved deep into the dark knowledge of Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game in 2013 and walked away the game’s new World Champion.

Star Wars™: The Card Game

Dennis Harlien demonstrated his mastery of the Force as he battled his way to the title of 2013 Star Wars™: The Card Game World Champion. Notably, Dennis and his opponent were tied after the first two games of the final match, forcing a third game. Dennis had to play the light side deck with which he lost the first game of the match, but with the fate of the galaxy at stake, Dennis was able to reverse his fortune and strike for the win.

Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

Oliver Franke conquered Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game with his Orc hordes, taking the title of 2013 World Champion back to Germany. His victory added to an already impressive resumé that included his status as the 2012 World Championship Runner-Up.

X-Wing™

Paul Heaver won the weekend’s final World Championship tournament in dramatic fashion. As a growing crowd gathered to watch his Rebel squad of two B-wings and two X-wings combat a seven-starfighter TIE swarm, Paul doggedly fought his way out of a hole that saw him down to two ships versus his opponent’s six. Throughout the match’s twenty-one rounds, spectators cheered and laughed as ships were destroyed or evaded potentially lethal attacks, and at the end both Paul and his opponent were down to just a single point of hull remaining. However, Paul’s sole remaining B-wing got to fire before his opponent’s TIE, and when his shot connected, Paul claimed the title of 2013 X-Wing World Champion!
