Guarding the Shores

A preview of Miskatonic Horror, an upcoming Arkham Horror expansion

#ArkhamHorror

The coastal town of Kingsport is no stranger to the inter-dimensional horrors lurking in the shadows. The turbulent waters of the ocean hold infinite mysteries and terrors that crawl their way ashore, disturbing the dream-haunted town. As rifts begin to open and fray the lines between our world and an ancient oblivion, protective beings emerge to aid the mortals in their plight.

Today, we continue our tour of terror with another look at Miskatonic Horror, the upcoming expansion for Arkham Horror that builds upon the materials found in other expansions. Previously, we explored new trauma varieties with additional Madness and Injury cards, and then saw how Overture cards effect the production of The King in Yellow. With Kingsport Horror, we’ll explore what Miskatonic Horror has to offer investigators in this shoreside town expansion.

An Introduction to Coastal Madness

For those who aren’t familiar with Kingsport Horror, it introduces players to an even more challenging encounter against an awakened Ancient One with the Epic Battles variant. Players use this variant by drawing from the Epic Battle deck during their struggle with the Ancient One. The cards drawn affect the investigators’ attacks and defense depending on the condition described on them.

Luckily, Kingsport Horror also gives investigators a unique type of protection: Guardians. Two of the Guardians in Kingsport Horror, Hypnos, Lord of Sleep, and Nodens, Lord of the Great Abyss, watch over the investigators and aid them with their supernatural powers during their fight against the Ancient One. To access these beneficial gifts, players must draw from the Visions of Hypnos and Blessings of Nodens decks. The Final Showdown

To Kingsport Horror’s Epic Battle variant, Miskatonic Horror provides two new card types that add an additional level of depth and unpredictability to confrontations against the Ancient One. As mentioned previously, during Epic Battles players draw a card from the Epic Battle deck, which usually hinders the investigators’ assault when they attack first, and can benefit the investigators when the Ancient One is the first to attack.

Miskatonic Horror heightens the tension of the final confrontation with the two new types of Epic Battle cards: Battle Conditions and Battle Events. Both of these cards represent neutral forces that affect the final conflict, either lending investigators a helping hand, or increasing the difficulty in attacking the Ancient One. While Battle Event cards have instant repercussions that are resolved and then discarded, the effects from Battle Condition cards last during the entire fight. These both ensure that combating the Ancient One is more perilous and unpredictable than ever before.

Expanding the Aid from Beyond

Miskatonic Horror expands both the Visions of Hypnos deck and the Blessings of Nodens deck from Kingsport Horror. Blessings of Nodens cards are drawn whenever an investigator receives a Blessing card, providing that player with an additional benefit while they are blessed. Miskatonic Horror adds more variety to this deck with new cards that have new benefits, such as protecting the investigators from nightmarish creatures and refreshing exhausted cards.

Visions of Hypnos cards increase the rate of Clue tokens that appear on the board, while also making certain locations easier for investigators to explore. The new Visions of Hypnos cards from the Miskatonic Horror expansion broadens the placement of clues from locations in Arkham to Kingsport, and includes locations in Dunwich and Innsmouth as well. With this expansion, the aid of the Guardians is more valuable than ever before.

The showdown with the source of Arkham’s disturbances is at hand. Follow the clues and join us next time as we dig deeper into the Miskatonic Horror expansion, and prepare for the Ancient One’s awakening when Miskatonic Horror is released later this quarter!
