New Leaders and Ancient Enemies

Announcing the next cycle of Battle Packs for Warhammer: Invasion

The Old World is rife with animosity, and each of the six major factions has its own powerful nemesis – one enemy faction that stands apart from the rest as an object of scorn. This summer, the ancient hatred of the Old World will explode onto your tabletop with The Enemy Cycle, the second exciting series of Battle Packs for Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game!

The Enemy Cycle, beginning this summer with The Burning of Derricksburg, explores the seething hostility between factions, expanding each one’s ability to specifically battle its sworn foe; as the Dwarfs face off against the Orcs, the Empire takes on the forces of Chaos. Meanwhile, the High Elves carry out a blood feud against their dark kin.

What’s more, The Enemy Cycle expands the breadth of deck-building options for each faction. With more use of new and existing traits, such as “Knight” for the Empire and “Disease” for Chaos, exciting new strategies will open for your Warhammer: Invasion deck!

James Hata, Game Designer here at Fantasy Flight Games, recently took the reins of Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game. As the designer of this new cycle (and future Warhammer: Invasion products), James is busy building on the strong design foundation that makes Warhammer: Invasion so popular. Despite his many projects, James took the time to write this brief introduction:

. . .

Hello, Warhammer: Invasion fans! My name is James Hata, and I’m happy to announce that I'm the new developer for the Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game. I will be taking charge and ensuring the success of this product line going forward.

Now, many of you might be asking yourselves, “Who is this guy? Why was he put in charge of our game?”

Let me begin by sharing a bit about my gaming background. I was first introduced to Collectible Card Games in the sixth grade with Magic: the Gathering. From that point forward, I was hooked! The customizable deck building experience and the breadth of different play styles were all endlessly fun and interesting to me. Since then, I also played many other CCGs including Yu-Gi-Oh!, VS System and Universal Fighting System.

Eventually, I started entering tournaments for UFS, hoping to gain some gamer glory. I was fortunate and won the 2007 US. National Championship and World Team Championship. I was also able to win the World Championship at Gencon the following year, getting hired at Fantasy Flight Games soon afterwards to be the new developer of the UFS product line.

After joining Fantasy Flight Games, I learned about and played each of our LCGs. I participated in our staff tournament for Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game and various other events as well. When Eric Lang started talking about designing a new LCG, I was honored to be one of the people asked to help.

I’ve been involved on and off with Warhammer: Invasion from the beginning (in fact, I helped break an initial version of the system and provided feedback when asked about some core concepts of the game). I am an avid player, and I’m excited about its continued growth going forward.

But enough about me. What are my plans for Warhammer: Invasion?

I can’t say too much yet, but The Enemy Cycle continues to explore the depth of each faction, providing them with new tools to expand upon their strategies to win. This cycle places an emphasis on the natural rivalries that take place between the six factions in the game - Dwarfs vs Orcs, Empire vs Chaos, and High Elf vs Dark Elf. What’s more, the Battle Packs will contain a series of short stories that serve as a primer for those of you Invasion fans who aren’t entirely familiar with Warhammer Fantasy but want to learn about your favorite faction.

Finally, remember that The Enemy Cycle is the first series of Battle Packs to adopt the new collation format, meaning that in each Battle Pack, you’ll receive three copies of each card (for a total of 60 cards).

We have a lot of other exciting plans for Warhammer: Invasion going forward, and I hope you'll enjoy the ride!

. . .

Thanks, James! Look for The Burning of Derricksburg, the first Battle Pack in The Enemy Cycle, when it hits shelves this summer!

In Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, designed by Eric M. Lang, two players develop their kingdoms and lay waste to their foes. Each side is comprised of either the forces of Order or the forces of Destruction as they seek to extend their empire to include the entire Old World. The Living Card Game™ format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Battle Pack expansions to the core game.
