New FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available for Call of Cthulhu


In Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, the Ancient Ones and their actions are obfuscated and hidden, lurking in other realms and buried beneath the weight of centuries. Efforts to reveal their full impact upon the mortal realm are made even harder by those who would use the information for their own ends: worshippers and cultists. These changes will go into effect on April 15th, 2015.

This update to the Call of Cthulhu FAQ and tournament rules sees a few new inclusions and a couple of alterations which should serve to shape the 2015 Regional Championship season.

The FAQ has been updated to address mechanics that have been added to the game over the last couple of years. For example, the new “remove from game” effects have been addresed, the document offers clarification on how players are to handle limits to effects, and it specifically addresses effects that reference the terms "lowest" and "highest," as well as "most" and "fewest." In the timing chart, the section on Disrupt effects has been cleaned up and expanded. The rulebook has also received errata about when mulligans can be taken, and by whom.

We also see a few changes to card errata and the restricted and banned lists. The biggest change here is that the banned list is now empty! All cards formerly on the banned list have received errata so they can now see play. All reprints of these cards will have the new wording.

The tournament rules have gone through a bit of a change as well. To bring Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game more in line with our other LCGs, the manner of calculating wins and how to handle ties has been revamped. A match win is when you win your game within the time limit, and it is worth five points. Losing within time gives you zero points. A modified match win is when a match ends and you have neither won three stories nor forced your opponent to run out of cards in his or her draw deck, but you end the match with more won stories. A modified match win is worth four points. Ending a match at time with less stories than your opponent is a modified match loss and is worth one point. If both players have the same number of stories won after time is called and each player has taken their final turn, the match is considered a draw and each player gets two points. In addition to this, the method of calculating ties has been clarified. All of this should make scoring more granular and help clarify which players make a tournament's final cut.

With these changes, the Call of Cthulhu metagame is as wide open as it has ever been. You have all the means to go forth and contest stories to your heart’s delight, and if the stars are right, take home a Regional Championship!
