Tannhäuser: State of the Game

A look at the past, present, and future of Tannhäuser.

As many of you have seen on our website, a State of the Game is a way for us to give you an update on how things are going with a game, what is coming up, and address some of your concerns. Tannhäuser is the newest addition to the FFG family. We are going to be doing these State of the Games periodically for Tannhäuser to keep you better updated than times previous.

For those of you just joining us, Tannhäuser is a game set in the 1950s. The Great War (known to us today as World War I) has never ended, and each side is trying to break the stalemate. The forces of the Union strive to end the conflict through the use of advanced technology, created from the alien wreckage discovered at Roswell. Their foes are the Reich. Headed by the occult powered Kaiser, this army of evil scours the globe for ways to enhance their prodigious occult abilities. Living embodiments of the reawakened Slavic gods, the Russian Matriarchy is a deadly force to be reckoned with. Their robotic hordes are fueled with the genius of Nikola Tesla, and his electrical weaponry is easily the equal of the Union's technological advancements.

For those of you who have been with us since GenCon 2006, Tannhäuser has seen new forces, new missions, and new entries into the glorious history of this universe. You have seen Yula, Ramirez, and Gorgeï choose a side. You watched the discovery of the Cardinal Points and the warping of reality around them. You have seen the elusive Wolf (who will be for sale alongside Daedalus this fall). You have seen the Matriarchy enter the fight, and the awesome powers of Zor’ka brought to bear. You have been there for every step of the past, but what is the future?

FFG wants to see the full potential of this game realized. We want this world to be a living breathing thing that we have the privilege of revealing. Currently we are in the process of transition. Take On You is sending us all of the assets for the game, and we will be going over them to see how far along all of the already announced projects are, and to make sure all upcoming projects are as close to perfect as can be. We will be showcasing previews of the upcoming Daedalus map expansion over the coming weeks, and there are a lot of products planned to follow it. We are holding off announcing them until the schedule is much more concrete, which means the time between announcement and when the product is in your hands is kept to a minimum. No more waiting, no more delays. We want this world to come alive, and stagnation is not an option.

Tannhäuser 2nd edition is something that we are throwing our complete support behind. The rules are being revised to provide a much more immersive feel to the game, and clear up a few spots. All of your existing material - tokens, figures, boards, dice, and packs - will be fully compatible with the new rules. We want you veteran players to get new joy out of playing the game you already have and love. We want those of you new to the Great War to have the best play experience possible. To ensure everyone has the chance to enjoy the new rules, they will be available for free download from our site. For those of you who love the smell and feel of a professionally printed rulebook, it will be available from our webstore for US $5. We do read the forums, and even though we do not post in them, we make sure to keep track of what is happening on them. The newest incarnation of the rules will clear up a lot of concerns.

Fear not Tannhäuser fans, the way ahead is clear. Whether you throw your lot in with the Reich, the Union, or the Matriarchy, this war is far from over.

Tannhäuser is a squad based game set in a U-chronic past. WWI has never ended and the forces of the Reich have turned to the occult. The forces of the Union have delved into alien technology and developed deadly weapons of war. Using the revolutionary Path-Finding System, Tannhäuser is quick and easy to play.
