A look at the upcoming Assault on Ulthuan expansion for Warhammer: Invasion
Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game | Published 09 March 2010

Ulthuan is a verdant, magical isle of white-towered cities, laying across the Great Ocean far to the west of the Old World. Ruled by the powerful Phoenix King, it is the bastion of the High Elves, exceptional craftsmen and ancient lore masters who carry themselves with noble dignity as they defend their home against the constant attacks of a cruel enemy – their treacherous kin, the Dark Elves.

Welcome to another card of the week spotlight for Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game! Back in December, we announced the upcoming release of Assault on Ulthuan, the first deluxe expansion for this epic card game of kingdoms, questing, and combat. With two core starter decks of forty cards, as well as two capital boards for the Dark Elves and High Elves, the Assault on Ulthuan expansion explores the bitter enmity between these two powerful factions.

This, along with new cards for the other four factions, plus a handful of neutrals, brings a host of new strategies, tactics, and deck-building options for each of the six races in the game.

We’re pleased to report that Assault on Ulthuan should be hitting store shelves within a month, so let’s take a look at two of the cards coming your way in this exciting expansion. We’ve already seen some of the power of the Dark Elves, including their units Dark Sorceress and Shades, and their tactic Invoke Khaine’s Wrath. Today, we’ll see how the High Elves respond to this onslaught.

The High Elf Hero Illyriel is a strong fighter who offers plenty of power and defense for her cost of four resources. Even better, however, is her ability; she can target a unit to extort two resources out of her opponent!

Let’s say that your opponent begrudgingly pays you those two resources, in the hopes of keeping some precious high-cost unit in play. Imagine his frustration when you simply put his money toward the tactic card Flames of the Phoenix, clearing the table of all units! This High Elf answer to “reset” cards like Troll Vomit and Judgement of Verena will keep your opponent guessing.

Join us again next week for another Warhammer: Invasion card of the week!

In Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, designed by Eric M. Lang, two players develop their kingdoms and lay waste to their foes. Each side is comprised of either the forces of Order or the forces of Destruction as they seek to extend their empire to include the entire Old World. The Living Card Game™ format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Battle Pack expansions to the core game.

hope that in future print Bretonians, if that happens I hope it is as High Elves. No Skaven as neutral

I wouldn't expect Beastmen to be their own faction since Gors are currently included in the Chaos deck. If anything, I would expect smaller expansions to put a Beastmen (and/or Daemon) theme to your Chaos deck but still be Chaos at it's core.  I could see them doing the same with Orcs to add a stronger Goblin theme to some decks.

Ogre Kingdoms would be a nice one to see though. So I would see Brettonians vs Vampire Counts; Lizardmen vs Skaven; and Ogre Kingdoms vs Tomb Kings (cause isn't the Great Maw in the land of the dead?)

Martin, it isn't supposed to be used in response to those, it is intended to be their version of a reset.

"This High Elf answer to “reset” cards like Troll Vomit and Judgement of Verena will keep your opponent guessing."

Not sure own all those "Play during your turn only" cards may keep opponent guessing... Basically the HE "reset" can't cancel the effect of the other "resets", since it can't be played "in response" of those.

At last!!!  We have been tantalised with this for ages and finally we look like we will get the 2 extra factions very soon.  Both look really strong, but again in different ways.  I wonder if the last 2 Battle Packs will even out the excess of Dark to High Elves as well as Destruction to Order Neutrals?  My set has been ordered for weeks but I expect another few weeks before my store gets it in the UK.  Still enjoying the game despite the FAQ release nearly killing the game.  Still, I don't have to play the new bad rules in my groups.

Cheers

I suspect we'll see more Deluxe expansions, just like Game of Thrones is getting its third one in a few months. I sure hope this set is legal for the upcoming Regionals at the FFG Events Center.
