“The light—it’s always been there. It’ll guide you.”
–Maz Kanata, The Force Awakens

The Force drives some to become Guardians, stalwart protectors of those in need. Others, it shapes into Warriors, military leaders eager to take the front lines. Others are turned by the Force towards medicine and diplomacy. And others, the Force leads on a relentless journey across the galaxy and deep into unexplored wildernesses. Known as Seekers, these pragmatic Force users live by their own rules, relying wholly on their own strengths, wits, and powers to survive. To guide these independent galactic wanderers, we have crafted Savage Spirits, an upcoming sourcebook for the Star Wars®: Force and Destiny Roleplaying Game™ roleplaying game.

In Savage Spirits, players will find new Seeker specializations, backgrounds, Moralities, and signature abilities, as well as copious amounts of survival and medical gear. Three more playable species are introduced to the Force and Destiny™ system, and a new Force power gives PCs the ability to see at great distances, even when their physical eyes are blinded. For Game Masters, Savage Spirits features expanded rules for wilderness settings and survival, along with outlines for Seeker-focused adventures and campaigns.

Natural Talents

Because Seekers mostly operate away from the comforts and supports of civilization, they depend on their skills and talents for every aspect of their survival, whether that means tracking animals, making shelter, or even, when necessary, killing adversaries. One of the specializations introduced in Savage Spirits, Executioner, is dedicated exactly to that. Executioners are apex predators, disciplined and shrewd, preferring to kill at range and eliminate the target without resistance.

While Executioners are dedicated to their targets, Navigators focus more on the journey than any outcome. They enjoy the thrill of discovery above all else, whether that discovery is a shortened trade route or an uncharted planet. As a Navigator, your abilities in Astrogation and Survival are second only to your high Perception, which is as useful for mapping the galaxy as it is tracking animals or finding your way through an urban labyrinth.

Seekers tend to be solitary by nature, but those with the Hermit specialization have taken that solitude to an extreme. Hermits isolate themselves in order to commune with the living Force, which enhances their survival skills, their understanding of nature, and their bonds with animals. When they choose to relinquish solitary life and join a group, Hermits help their companions to survive in wildernesses that, to Hermits, feel like home.

Beasts of No Nation

Regardless of specialization or career, the wildness is an excellent hiding place for a group of fugitive Force sensitives. But while you’ll find fewer Imperials and political conflicts in the wild, you will undoubtedly meet some wild animals who may think of you as prey, predator, or ally. Savage Spirits includes a bestiary of new creatures, from Dantooine’s horned kath hounds and the feral, predatory vrblthers of Nar Shaddaa to darting Spintiri glowbats and pouncing nexu. Along with rules for taming and riding these beasts, you’ll find guidelines for managing animals companions, should one of your party manage to permanently befriend a Mantellian flutterplume.

Savage Spirits also offers players a wide variety of gear to combat the challenges of life in the wilderness, gear which may prove just as useful in an urban jungle. The Field Sports Compound Bow, for example, offers the precision and silence of a sniper rifle at much less the cost, with a selection of arrows that can stun, capture, or ignite your target. Much more expensive is the optical camouflage system armor upgrade, which renders you nearly invisible to the naked eye and also shields any heat or radiation you are giving off. With this upgrade activated, you could explore Hutt palaces, planetary capitals, and even Imperial bases without fear of being seen.

Roads Less Traveled

Any party with a Seeker in it is bound to explore some unusual places. In Savage Spirits, GMs will find three short, Seeker-centered adventures that take players to a remote Outer Rim settlement, the Deep Core, or the planetary wilds chosen by the GM. Three campaign outlines are also included that offer Seekers starring roles in journeys across the Star Wars galaxy that take them from the desert wreckage of a crashed starship all the way to Dathomir and eventually home—wherever that may be.

Of course, your party may already have a goal that shapes its wandering. Many characters in Force and Destiny are searching for the knowledge of the Force that was lost when the Jedi Order was extinguished, hoping that greater knowledge and power will enable them to fulfill their destiny. The upcoming Nexus of Power sourcebook offers gazeteers for all the legendary destinations that your party may wish to visit: Dagobah, Ilum, Ossus, the abandoned Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and more. Together, Nexus of Power and Savage Spirits provide enough content to satisfy your Seeker’s wanderlust and introduce your party to more incredible places and experiences than ever before.

        };
        $('#8479').colorbox(opts);
      });

Will Light Guide You—or Dark?

As a Seeker or any other Force sensitive, you have no choice but to embark upon your destined journey. The Force will set you on that path whether you desire it or not, as it did with Luke Skywalker, as it did with his father Anakin, as it did with Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and so many before them. But you’ll soon find that at the heart of that journey is a relentless question: is the dark side or the light your guide? Will you live in tune with the living Force, as at home in the wilderness as in the comforts of a city, or will you choose instead to seek and destroy, succumbing to the thrill of the hunt and the allure of power?

Savage Spirits will be available in second quarter of this year, and Nexus of Power will soon be released. In the meantime, Guardians can take center stage with the sourcebook Keeping the Peace, or your party can follow in the footsteps of a Force power innovator with the Chronicles of the Gatekeeper adventure.

“I have a chance to change things.”
–Kanan Jarrus

The time to change the galaxy and help numberless populations is now. Keeping the Peace, a sourcebook for the Star Wars®: Force and Destiny™ roleplaying system, is now available at North American retailers and in our online store.

Focusing on the Guardian career, this 96-page full-color sourcebook offers players new specializations, signature abilities, and a new Force power. For Game Masters, it offers help on crafting thrilling adventures and epic campaigns for your players, whether they are all Guardians or a mix of Force sensitives, Rebels, Smugglers, Explorers and other fearless souls.

The Makings of a Hero

The Jedi of the Old Republic hailed from across the galaxy and possessed a wide range of skills. Guardians of the era of the Galactic Civil War are no different. Keeping the Peace introduces three diverse new playable species: fiery, petite Lanniks; massive, long-lived Whiphids, and foresighted, willful Iktochi. In addition to the Protector, Peacekeeper, and Soresu Defender specializations of the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook, you can now pick up the Warden, Warleader, and Armorer specializations, even if you chose a career other than Guardian. You can find out more about these species, specializations, and the Guardian Signature abilities in this recent preview.

Gear for a Less Civilized Age

In the era of the Galactic Civil War, a fugitive Force sensitive needs more than a lightsaber to stay alive and out of the Empire’s grasp. Keeping the Peace offers much more than weapons. A pair of Stun Cuffs lets you restrain an enemy during questioning or subdue a violent opponent. The PX-7 heat sensor allows you to detect nearby life forms or isolate damage to your vehicle or droid. Riot armor is an inexpensive way to shield yourself in the line of blaster fire, or, if you’re very fortunate, you may come across the armor of a Jedi Temple Guard, which conceals not only your body, but also your identity.

No matter whether you’re steadfastly watching over one planet or continuously on the run like Kanan Jarrus, you’ll need some form of transportation. The D-4 defense platform can transport your team to the battlefield and transport the wounded away from it, and help defend you during the fight. If you need a patrol ship or prefer to travel solo, the M12-L Kimogila starfighter is heavily harmed and equipped with a Class 2 hyperdrive. If your group is short on funds but you’ve got a good Mechanic, Technician, or Ace around, you may want to purchase a VCX-100 light frieghter and customize it for your needs, as Hera Syndulla and Kanan Jarrus did in creating the Ghost. Keeping the Peace introduces this legendary and fast freighter to the Force and Destiny roleplaying game.

Time for Change

Since you were young, you wanted to protect and help others. You may have defended your friends or siblings from bullies, spent your childhood as a refugee, or even lost family in war. But now, with the Force coursing through your body and mind, you have the chance to battle oppression, defend the innocent, slay monsters, and strive for peace. The Galactic Civil War rages around you and the time for change has come.

Countless bandits, armed with blaster rifles, slugthrowers, and swords, stand before you. Behind you unarmed, innocent civilians huddle in fear. On either side stand your friends and allies, steadfast, fearless, and ready for the fight. You stand in the center of the scene, your lightsaber glowing, determined to do whatever it takes to protect them all—even at the cost of your own life.

As a Guardian in the Star Wars®: Force and Destiny™ roleplaying game, you stand in the front lines, and put yourself in the way of danger so that others don’t have to. It’s not easy, but you have the courage, selflessness, and unflinching determination that it takes to be a Guardian. Keeping the Peace, an upcoming sourcebook, offers the talents, gear, specializations, and vehicles to help you succeed in that challenging—and rewarding—career. In today’s preview, Lead Developer Max Brooke introduces the two Guardian signature abilities of Keeping the Peace: Fated Duel and Unmatched Heroism. You’ll also learn about the book’s three new, exceptional, playable species.

        };
        $('#15553').colorbox(opts);
      });

Engage in a Fated Duel

In the words of Max Brooke:

Along with narrative actions such as taunting foes to draw their attention or standing physically between enemies and allies, Guardians have several mechanical tools at their disposal to protect allies in battle. Some talents available to the Guardian direct attacks away from others and onto the Guardian. However, even when using these talents and good roleplaying, it can be difficult to hold off determined foes for too long. Most enemies are not easily fooled into ignoring soft targets, and this can be especially true for dark side Force users. To this end, the Guardian signature abilities in Keeping the Peace give the Guardian two very different, very powerful ways to control the flow of battle and keep friends safe from harm.

Fated Duel allows a Guardian to challenge an enemy to a one-on-one battle, so allies have a chance to complete other tasks, defeat other foes, or even escape. As long as Fated Duel is active, the two participants can only target each other and outsiders cannot intervene. This also makes Fated Duel a way for the Guardian to turn the tide of an otherwise hopeless fight by decapitating the enemy force—provided, of course, that the Guardian can win the ensuing clash. To this end, the Stand Firm upgrade increases the Guardian’s wound threshold for the duration of the duel. Of course, wounds inflicted during the duel don’t disappear, so a Guardian might win a deadly conflict, then immediately collapse from her injuries.

Fated Duel can also embolden allies to perform impressive feats of their own. The Inspiration upgrade gives allies a boost die for any checks they make while the duel is going on. Meanwhile, the Cosmic Balance upgrade flips a Destiny Point to the Light Side every time the Guardian suffers a Critical Injury during the one-on-one battle, giving allies more resources to complete their own tasks. These upgrades help allies take advantage of the opening the Guardian created, rather than just sitting back and watching the ongoing duel.

Perform Unmatched Heroics

Unmatched Heroism helps the Guardian stay in between friends and foes, but in a more literal manner. A Guardian who activates Unmatched Heroism can suffer strain in order to intercept attacks from any enemy against nearby allies. This makes it well suited to large battles against many opponents, where attacks can come from any angle, without warning. However, it also means that a Guardian using Unmatched Heroism is likely going to get hit—a lot. Fortunately, Guardians are uniquely suited to acting as a bulwark for the party. The Protector’s Force Protection talent and the Armorer’s Armor Master both boost soak, while the Soresu Defender’s ranks of Parry and Reflect mean that the character can dramatically reduce the incoming damage.

The upgrades to Unmatched Heroism make it more flexible. The Endurance upgrade lowers the strain cost to activate it, something very useful for Guardians who use Parry as a first line of defense. Meanwhile, the Increase Range upgrade lets the character leap to the side of allies within medium range, dramatically expanding the ground she can cover when intercepting attacks. Peacekeepers and Warleaders are likely to find Unmatched Heroism especially useful, as it allows them to keep coordinating allies while intercepting hits and mitigating damage.

Whether a Guardian faces down one foe in a dramatic display of lightsaber skill or heroically leaps between allies and foes on a chaotic battlefield, deflecting shots and absorbing hits all the while, these signature abilities help keep friends safe in a dangerous galaxy.

Thank you, Max!

Act Natural

Your skills and talents, from Lightsaber and Leadership, to Grit and Parry, to any signature abilities you have, can be acquired and developed over the course of your adventures. But your species is your nature, the foundation of everything you can do. In Keeping the Peace, you’ll find three species whose qualities and capabilities are a solid foundation for the Guardian career, as well as countless others.

The humanoid, horned Iktochi may look fearsome, but they are not innately hostile. In fact, the moon Iktotch is largely free from military conflict because of a rare gift all Iktotchi possess: the ability to see flashes of the future. They can know how someone will respond to a question, whether a decision will result in harm, perhaps even who will win a battle—so they have very little need to fight. The Iktotchi even foresaw the formation of the Galactic Empire, and any who were abroad at that time fled home to Iktotch, seeking safety and peace. If you choose to play an Iktotchi character, your precognitive abilities are manifest as one rank in Vigilance and the ability to spend

in exchange for a free maneuver before an encounter. GMs may also provide Iktotchi PCs occasional glimpses of what lies ahead.

Lanniks, on the other hand, embrace militarism and physical violence. They had to. Lanniks are comparatively small compared to other sentient species, and had to be constantly on guard against much larger predators—and against each other. But alongside their belligerence, Lannik culture also evolved codes of honor that reward the most valorous, effective, and selfless combatants, and it is that ingrained sense of honor that led Force-sensitive Lanniks in the past to become Jedi.

Throughout the galaxy, the compact Lanniks are sought-after mercenaries and enforcers. What makes them such talented warriors isn’t their ferocity, bravery, or even their brawn, but their high intelligence. A Lannik knows not just how to compensate for his height, but how to use it; not just how an opponent may attack, but how to counter; not just who the enemy is, but everything about them as well.

Lanniks physically look up to other sentients; Whiphids tower over almost all of them. These hairy, imposing, tusked mammals have never needed to be especially aggressive in order to thrive. Yet like Lanniks, they have become renowned bodyguards, mercenaries, and Jedi. Among each other, Whiphids tend to avoid conflict, since it takes energy away from the hunt for food and the struggle to survive on their frozen homeworld, Toola. Their longevity may also keep them from conflict. Whiphids can live to be over two-and-a-half centuries old, and over those years they accumulate a body of experiential wisdom that most other sentient species can never tap into. That wisdom may make your Whiphid character a patient Armorer, a calm and dedicated Protector, or a prudent and strategic Warden.

      });

Never Bow Down

These are dangerous times. As the Rebellion gains momentum, the Galactic Empire tightens its grip upon the galaxy, mercilessly hunting down dissidents, relentlessly persecuting Wookiees, Duros, and countless other minorities, including Force users. But with your powers and skills, you don’t have to ever bow down. You can stand up to the Empire and other threats, fighting not for yourself, but for all the disadvantaged and oppressed peoples of the galaxy. Keeping the Peace helps you take that stand.

“If all you do is fight for your own life, then your life is worth nothing.”
–Hera Syndulla

You’ve moved objects with your mind, and leapt several meters in a single bound. You’ve secretly influenced the minds of other sentients and healed their wounds. You can even peer into the future. Maybe you’ve used these powers to make money, pilot a ship, find out secret information, or even just stay alive. Yet there is far more you can do. You can save the lives of others, battle oppression, change a village or planet for the better—even affect the future of the entire galaxy.

Those who take up the Guardian Career in the Star Wars®: Force and Destiny™ roleplaying game use their powers to make positive changes and fight for the lives of others at the risk of their own. The upcoming supplement Keeping the Peace offers these heroic individuals new specializations, talents, gear, and vehicles, so that they can better protect anyone in need. You can learn about the Guardian specializations of Keeping the Peace in the announcement for it.

Yet there’s more to being a Guardian than the Force powers you possess and the lightsaber you wield. Today’s preview takes a look at some of the epic Guardian stories that you might experience and how Keeping the Peace can help players and GMs create those stories together.

      });

Mythological Origins

One influence George Lucas has cited for the development of Luke Skywalker’s journey in Star Wars is Joseph Campbell’s concept of the mythical hero’s journey. That same conceptual framework can be used to shape a Guardian’s path within a campaign. Keeping the Peace explores how Luke’s journey compares to that of Campbell’s mythical hero and suggests ways in which Game Masters and players can incorporate mythic tropes into their roleplaying games.

You might give your Guardian character a problematic relationship with a powerful parental figure—that figure might wield great political power or simply have dominated your character’s life in a way they seek to break free from. A piece of your Guardian’s starting gear might tie them back to that parent or come from a mysterious past that you have yet to fully understand. A group including at least one Guardian can choose a holocron as their group resource: the Game Master can then use that holocron to issue a pressing, irresistible summons that will lead the Guardian character far from home.

A Road of Trials

One key part of the hero’s journey is the road of trials: a series of tests that both challenge the hero and aid his growth. Keeping the Peace suggests four different adventure arcs that might compose your hero’s road of trials. A Guardian could be challenged to slay a terrible, menacing monster such as a rancor, acklay, or giant, carnivorous krayt dragon. You might be resting at a village or colony only to discover that hostile raiders or Imperial troops are on the way, and that you’ll have to engage in a battle against impossible odds in order to ensure that as many innocent people as possible survive.

You may encounter a settlement facing a threat that your group cannot manage alone. They may have spent years oppressed by a tyrannical government or find themselves at the center of an interplanetary conflict that they never sought to be involved in. Your work then is to arm the people and lead them in the defense of their homes, as Anakin, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan do so often in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. But commanding untrained townsfolk in battle is only part of the challenge. Persuading them to stand up for themselves in the first place may prove as tough as the actual combat.

Fighting for Others’ Lives

Within Keeping the Peace you’ll also find the outlines of two multi-episode campaigns for your group of Force users and suggestions on how to craft campaigns of your own with similar themes. One campaign focuses on the theme of protecting the weak. The PCs arrive on a planet in the corporate sector, only to find that most of the planet’s residents are bound in indentured servitude to the ruling corporation, doing hard labor in terrible conditions. Players’ Morality will likely compel them to find some way of changing these wretched and oppressive circumstances, whether by inciting an anti-corporate rebellion or by trying to influence the minds of the corporate leaders.

Rather than seek to change an unjust situation, Guardians may also strive to maintain order in the face of destructive chaos. That chaos may be caused by war, violent crime, or more natural causes like floods, earthquakes, and plagues. The second campaign outlined in Keeping the Peace pits your group against a lethal airborne infection that ravishes both the respiratory tract and nervous system of its victims. To stop the disease, you’ll have to find its origin and its cure. You’ll also have to heal the side effects of the disease upon society: vacant seats of power, broken supply lines, and ubiquitous paranoia.

        };
        $('#E8AC').colorbox(opts);
      });

A Call to Adventure

In every system of the Star Wars galaxy, from the Core to the Outer Rim, an epic, heroic journey awaits you. All you have to do is remain open to the call to adventure, which may be as subtle as a news briefing from a distant planet or as personal and clear as the discovery of a holocron.

Pre-order Keeping the Peace from your local retailer today! And speaking of holocrons, look for the Chronicles of the Gatekeeper adventure supplement at local retailers soon.

"For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire."
–Obi-Wan Kenobi

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Keeping the Peace, a sourcebook for Guardians and the first career supplement for the Star Wars®: Force and Destiny™ roleplaying game.

Guardians live to protect, whether that means enforcing justice, shielding others in battle, or fighting oppression through political means. They put the needs of others ahead of their own. They ask questions first and strike after – but only if violence is absolutely necessary. Keeping the Peace offers Guardian characters everything they need to live up to their noble ideals and make a positive difference on countless worlds, including new Guardian specializations, playable species, weapons, and starships to convey them throughout the Star Wars galaxy.

        };
        $('#17EC4').colorbox(opts);
      });

Lead and Fight

To establish a benificent order, you sometimes have to engage in the brutalities of war. If you take up the new Warleader specialization introduced in Keeping the Peace, you can use your foresight, tactical acumen, and lightsaber to win necessary battles with minimal bloodshed. Warleaders gain Leadership, Perception, Ranged (light), and Survival in addition to the core Guardian skills, so that they can see the enemy’s approach, command their own troops, take up arms, and keep fighting in the worst of circumstances. Warleaders also have access to Force talents including Forewarning, which boosts the defense of your allies, and Prescient Shot, which gives you an advantage in using weapons like blasters and thermal detonators.

Craft and Create

Whether you’re fighting wars or fighting crime in a shadowport’s streets, you’ll need to protect yourself in order to protect others. That might mean investing in some armor, such as Jedi battle armor or Jedi temple armor, made for Jedi Guardians in the days before the Empire. You’ll have to get the armor refitted to you, but once you put it on you’ll be much harder to wound.

You could also take up the new Armorer specialization and make your own armor. Armorers aren’t just talented craftspeople. They can wield their lightsabers with deadly precision and retrofit materials with their bare hands even in the middle of battle. Guardian Armorers also possess a tool that other Mechanics and Technicians lack – the Force. It allows them to succeed in Mechanics checks without proper repair equipment, easily comprehend foreign technology, and even imbue an item that they make with the Force, granting that item qualities far beyond those that can be produced through mere physical manufacturing. In order to allow Armorers to use these incredible talents to their full extent, Keeping the Peace introduces guidelines for making armor, from designing the piece and selecting the materials to the exacting crafting process itself.

Protect and Defend

While Warleaders and Armorers occupy the front lines in a battle, Guardians of the Warden specialization prefer to identify and subdue enemies before they make the move to attack. Wardens are adept, disciplined hand-to-hand fighters, but even better at convincing potential attackers not to fight at all. They know the underworld inside and out, and their talents allow Wardens to intimidate adversaries and prevent them from getting away, or launch into scathing verbal tirades that cause evil-doers to suffer strain as they are forced to hear their own cruel deeds cataloged. Yet a Warden’s use of coercion may conflict with his sense of justice. The empowering practice of intimidating or threatening an opponent can corrupt a Warden’s sense of right and wrong, drawing him towards the dark side he originally set out to fight against.

Because physical might has no bearing on your ability to do what’s right, three playable species of widely varying size are introduced in Keeping the Peace. Lanniks are small, fiery warriors from the mid rim, masters of using their short stature to gain the advantage against a much larger opponent. The horned, large-handed Iktochi are comparable to humans, Zabrak, and Twi’leks in size. This species is uniquely gifted with an innate ability to see flashes of the future. Whiphids loom over other sentients, standing an average of two meters tall. Having evolved in a cold climate where survival is impossible outside of the group, Whiphids are stout, hairy creatures with a straightforward language who tend to avoid conflict. They also tend to live a very long time – over two hundred years – and the wisdom gained over such a long lifetime augments their desire to establish peace and promote justice whenever possible.

No matter what specialization or species you choose, Keeping the Peace offers you two Guardian Signature Abilities and a new Force Power that characters within any Career can acquire. The Suppress Power will particularly interest Guardians because it enables them to shield themselves and others from Force-based attacks, ensuring safety in the presence of sentients wielding the dark side.

        };
        $('#CC69').colorbox(opts);
      });

Become a Hero

Once you’ve developed your Guardian character, or perhaps diverse group of Guardians, it is time to turn your attention to the heroic journey ahead. Keeping the Peace therefore concludies with extensive suggestions for Game Masters on how to create adventures and campaigns suited for Guardians, from archetypal quests of self-discovery or monster-slaying to military adventures in which characters must lead villagers in a battle for independence and survival, with all the odds against them.

When the Jedi Order fell, innumerable worlds lost their peacekeepers, protectors, leaders, and defenders. Under the gaze of Imperial officers local conflicts are exploding. Small-time crooks are becoming criminal bosses. Pirates, slavers, corrupt politicians, and all manner of villains thrive. With Keeping the Peace, you have the opportunity to establish a just and compassionate order amid this chaos. Now is your chance to become a hero.

Keeping the Peace will be available in Q3 of 2015. In the meantime, pre-order the Force and Destiny Core Rulebook and Game Master’s Kit from your local retailer!
