"You will take me to Jabba now."
–Luke Skywalker, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

The first Seasonal Kits of 2019 are heading to retailers, and there has never been a better time to take part in Star Wars™: Destiny Organized Play!

With the release of Convergence and the introduction of rotation, the game's Standard card pool is the most accessible it has been in many months. Players everywhere have an abundance of new strategies to explore. New card types have introduced thematic decks built around bounty hunting, lightsaber forms, and traits, such as droid, trooper, Jedi, and Sith.

And now—to top things off—Star Wars: Destiny Organized Play has just become far more inclusive and welcoming!

As we suggested in the article, "The Future of Organized Play," the team at Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play has been working on a series of changes that we'll be rolling out throughout 2019, and these start with the 2019 Season One Kit and its focus on Open Play Nights.

Play More to Earn More

Tournaments and competitive play will always have their place in Star Wars: Destiny Organized Play. However, these events aren't for all players—nor even for competitive players at all times.

There are times when newer players want to join the local gaming community without getting systematically dissected by their opponent's best decks. There are players who might have enough time for a game or two, but not for a full tournament. And there are players who may want to focus on exploring new cards, tricks, and deck types rather than reloading their deadliest arsenals.

In order to make sure all these players can join the Star Wars: Destiny community, we retooled the game's Seasonal Kits to focus on casual Open Play. Retailers can still use the kits to support tournaments—but they do not have to. Instead, the focus is squarely on participation.

To earn the custom cards made available in the game's new Seasonal Kits, you need only do two things:

Show up to your favorite local game store.

Play Star Wars: Destiny.

That's it. For each game you play, you'll earn a check mark on the month's tracking sheet, and each time you check off a complete section, you earn a card.

The 2019 Season One Kit supports three months of Open Play, offering two different extended art cards per month. Play enough games, and you can earn two copies of each card. You can play at whatever pace you want—you can play just one or two games per night, or you and your friends can slam through ten games and earn your copies of the month's promo cards on your first trip to the store.

The beauty of the program lies in its simplicity: you simply need to play more to earn more.

Upgrade Your Gaming Experience

Beguile your opponents. Probe their defenses. Strap on a pair of Mandalorian Vambraces. Blast your opponent's characters with an Umbaran Hover Tank.

When you participate in Star Wars: Destiny Open Play, you're enjoying the game, helping to grow your local community, and earning extended art versions of cards that you can use to upgrade your gaming experience.

Again, you don't have to win any tournament games to earn these cards. You don't even have to play in a tournament. Although, if you do, those tournament games will certainly count toward your Open Play participation!

You Will Be Rewarded

In the "what if" dice-and-card battles of Star Wars: Destiny, you pit your team of iconic Star Wars heroes or villains against whatever combination of characters your opponent may bring. Your options are nearly limitless, and the fast-paced action lends itself perfectly toward thrilling competition.

That said, there's plenty of room to enjoy Star Wars: Destiny, its battles, and all its creative potential in more casual environments as well.

While Star Wars: Destiny Organized Play has historically focused on tournament play with little regard to the more casual players—and while we're giving just as much attention to to Star Wars: Destiny tournament play as ever—we're excited to extend our Open Play Nights to a wider, newer, and more casual audience as well.

                             class="padding align-center product-feature" />

You don't have to optimize every dice roll to enjoy Star Wars: Destiny. You don't have to compete in tournaments to make new friends and join the game's community. And you don't have to prepare a counter for every new strategy to be rewarded with some of the galaxy's coolest prizes. You just have to show up, and play.

Come join us for some games of Star Wars: Destiny. Talk to your local retailer to find out when and how you can get started with Organized Play!

Director Orson Krennic Commander Expansion

Every great achievement requires just as much ambition, and there are few as ambitious as Director Orson Krennic. As the head of the Empire’s Advanced Weapons Research division, he oversaw the creation of the dreaded Death Star, and he employs the same ambition on the battlefields of Star Wars™: Legion. Ruthless and cunning, Krennic can manipulate friends and foes alike to acheive his goals in battle.

The Director Orson Krennic Commander Expansion contains one finely sculpted Director Orson Krennic miniature, enough for one commander unit, along with new unit, upgrade, and command cards to field in battle.

Stand amidst your own achievements with the single highly detailed miniature of Director Orson Krennic, as he stalks forward, cape billowing in the wind, with his DT-29 blaster pistol drawn and ready to finish off a fallen Rebel.

At the Gates is the first Chapter Pack in the King's Landing cycle for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game.

Featuring three copies each of twenty distinct cards, this Chapter Pack marks the beginning of the sixth cycle of Chapter Packs for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. The King’s Landing cycle takes a new approach to the game. Rather than following the plot of A Song of Ice and Fire, this cycle is centered around the capital of Westeros, allowing you to explore the world of Westeros more freely than ever before.

Your journey begins at the great wall that surrounds the capital city. Aegon I Targaryen had seven gates built as the entrances to his grand metropolis to honor the Faith of the Seven. Now in At the Gates, the great Houses of Westeros gain access to these blessed locations. Additionally, this Chapter Pack features new versions of beloved characters, embracing the plots and deadly intrigues of A Song of Ice and Fire with the continuation of the shadow keyword, first reintroduced in the Dance of Shadows cycle.

"Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That's the only way to become what you are meant to be."
–Kylo Ren, Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The Star Wars™: Destiny Regional Championship season may have come to a close, but there has never been a better and more exciting time to play!

Not only is there currently a good measure of diversity among the game's competitive decks, but rotation is also nearly upon us—and promises to shake things up.

However, before I jump into the specifics of this upcoming rotation, it might be helpful to take a step back for any players that are newer to collectible games. For a lot of players, Star Wars: Destiny might be their first collectible game, and with rotation coming up, it’s important to take a look at what to expect and how to prepare for the next season of play.

        <img src="https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/2f/ae/2fae0fce-210e-41cb-aea9-e31d97c98706/swd-2018wc-edwin-trophy.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; width: 700px;"
Edwin Chen with his 2018 World Champion trophy.

Change Is Coming

First off, some players might ask what rotation is and what the point of it is. Rotation is the systematic retirement of older sets of cards—and, in Star Wars: Destiny, dice—scheduled at specific intervals. This rotation is healthy for a collectible game because it continually refreshes the gameplay experience and reduces the pressure on newer players to keep up with the different product releases. It's much easier for a player to get into a game when there aren't six or eight sets of cards to pursue!

At the same time, several of the most recent sets are going to remain in the Standard pool even after rotation, and there are a number of cards from these sets that have stood out and are sure to have a lasting impact post-rotation.

Few could have expected a battlefield to define the competitive scene, but Theed Royal Palace has done just that. Nearly every competitive deck runs this battlefield, and the initial roll off has become more important than ever as players fight to gain the battlefield's initial resource advantage. Although a single resource may not seem like much, it gives players a lot more options. Not only does it make three-cost upgrades and supports easier to play, but it allows players to play a two-cost upgrade—even while holding a resource back for mitigation. It’ll be interesting to see if this battlefield continues to dominate moving forward.

Second, few characters have had the sort of impact that Darth Vader – Terror to Behold has had. Living up to his name, Vader has quickly become one of the most popular characters, and it will be interesting to see how other high-cost characters compete with him.

Finally, there's another card that is sure to continue to terrorize players after the coming rotation—

      Vader’s Fist

. Despite the fact this support costs five resources, almost every villain deck tries to include it, as it puts a timer on the game once it’s played. Not only does it easily throw out eight to ten damage the turn it’s played, but it continues to deal around six to eight damage every turn. This card has set the standard for high-cost cards and will definitely be an impactful card moving forward.

While it’s important to take note of high-impact cards like these that will stay in the format, it’s perhaps even more necessary to look at the cards that will be rotating out. There are many cards that have been staples for a long time and will force a host of changes and adaptations after they rotate out of the Standard game.

Become Something New

In Star Wars: Destiny, each of the colors has its own identity, each has been defined by certain archetypes over the past years, and each will be impacted by rotation.

Red

Although Red seems to be the least impacted color, it still sees the rotation of many staple and niche cards that will force players to think differently. Red characters like Admiral Pryce, Rex, and Commander Cody emphasize battlefield control, and they will miss cards like Dug In and Defensive Position. Accordingly, players will look for replacements like Reach the Stars and Aerial Advantage.

In addition, as Red vehicle decks lose ramp cards like Rally Aid, they may look for additional ways to generate resources. This could open up the potential for a vehicle deck focused around controlling Theed Royal Palace and generating resources through that, while also taking advantage of the aforementioned battlefield cards.

Yellow

Yellow, specifically Yellow hero, is losing two Awakenings cards that have shaped the game since it first launched—

      Hyperspace Jump

and

      Second Chance

.

These two cards have almost defined Yellow hero, and depending who you are, you either hate that they are rotating out or can’t wait for them to go. Both serve the purpose of extending a game much longer than it would normally last. Hyperspace Jump is basically a get-out-of-jail-free card, as it literally ends a round on the spot, and Second Chance essentially gives any Yellow card an additional five to ten health.

Although Yellow hero still has strong removal cards like Hasty Exit and Easy Pickings, the fact that it's losing Hyperspace Jump and Second Chance might herald a shift from aggressive two-character decks to more grindy three- to four-character decks that focus on vehicles. These decks might build on the strong vehicle synergy that already exists in Yellow hero thanks to Lando Calrissian and L3-37.

        <img src="https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/77/16/77165482-8305-4802-9e82-1c61934118e4/swd13_a1_lando-dice.png" style="max-width: 100%; width: 360px;"

Blue

The color impacted most by rotation will likely be Blue, which is probably also the most popular color in the game.

Perhaps the most played card in all of Star Wars: Destiny is Force Illusion, which is often considered by many to be the best card ever printed. I have yet to see a Blue deck that does not run this Spirit of Rebellion card, and its departure will force players to once again more actively approach their damage mitigation.

Similarly, the

      Ancient Lightsaber

is another Blue card that has seen play in almost every Blue deck, and its ability to heal characters in a pinch combined very well with its extremely strong dice sides for a two-cost upgrade.

Finally, Blue includes two of the three zero-cost dice cards in the game, Force Speed and Sith Holocron. Although these upgrades are not quite as ubiquitous as Force Illusion, they have both seen major play and showed the power of zero-cost dice. Sith Holocron alone made Force powers like Force Throw and Mind Probe playable in Blue villain decks.

These four cards represent just a few of the strong Blue cards that are rotating out, but even though they will soon have to replace so many powerful cards, I believe Blue decks will still look largely similar to before. They'll be mid-range two-character decks that utilize Force-driven ability upgrades and Lightsabers.

Neutral

Outside of the game's three primary colors, there are also some neutral and battlefield cards worth mentioning.

Probably the most important of these is Close Quarters Assault. This card alone gave melee decks the chance to mitigate opponents' hand sizes and play without fear of removal.

Another neutral event that has had an impact since Awakenings is All In. This card allowed almost any deck to action cheat and steal wins whenever it was played.

Of course, there are also battlefields rotating out, and although it isn’t currently as popular as Theed Royal Palace, Emperor’s Throne Room defined many decks and was long the core of decks based on dice-driven special abilities.

Planning for Success

One of the simplest approaches to take with deckbuilding right after rotation hits is to look at successful existing decks and consider how to best replace cards that are now unavailable.

For example, although Ancient Lightsabers and Shoto Lightsabers were amazing upgrades, the Legacies set introduced plenty of two-cost upgrades like Treasured Lightsaber that can serve as a solid replacements. Like the Shoto and Ancient Lightsabers, it has three damage sides, plus it offers a powerful card draw effect.

It’s also important to remember that as cards rotate out, some existing deck types are bound to get weaker, and decks less affected by rotation will become more competitive.

For example, decks built around the aforementioned Darth Vader – Terror to Behold may see dips in play, as they're losing a couple key cards. Darth Vader's high-value character dice make it easy to activate Friends in High Places and cheat out cards like Vader’s Fist and

, but as Friends in High Places rotates out, the deck faces the prospect of paying full price for these potent supports and upgrades. Similarly, the deck also loses access to Rise Again, which essentially provided Vader with five to ten additional health and the ability to play expensive upgrades from the discard pile.

Although Vader will remain a force to be reckoned with, the fact that his decks lose these key cards may mean that a deck with Luke – Reluctant Instructor and Rey – Finding the Ways finds a new chance to shine.

Rally to the Cause

It's important to note that rotation does more than shake up the competitive scene. It should also invigorate the community and make it easier for new players to get involved.

Not only will existing players welcome a new meta and new players find the game far more accessible, but players who had taken a break may be inclined to see how the meta has been affected. With fewer cards in the Standard card pool, rotation brings us to a perfect time for newer or returning players to jump into their local Star Wars: Destiny events without feeling overwhelmed.

To encourage these newer players, communities might want to consider holding league nights. The basic concept is straightforward; when the Convergence set releases, every player starts out with one of the new starter decks. Then every week, each player in the league adds a booster to their deck.

The gradual progression of a league like this allows newer players to participate on an even playing field while also giving experienced players a chance to test new cards (and cards they would otherwise ignore) and see how they fare.

In the same vein, our local scene has also developed a community chest program. Players love to crack open booster packs and boxes, but in the end, who really needs their fifth Savage Opress or Force Mystic? Instead, we have a local box filled with extra cards and dice that our players have contributed, and we allow any new player to dig through it and take whatever they need. This gives newer players even more opportunity to develop their collection and gives veteran players the chance to offload some of their excess cards.

Overall, rotation is an exciting time for experimentation and for growing the whole Star Wars: Destiny community, and I look forward to seeing its impact on the game!

From early days of the Clone Wars to the struggle between the First Order and the Resistance, leaders and troopers have determined the fate of the galaxy by joining the battle on the front lines. From the inspiring Padmé Amidala to the terrifying Captain Phasma, these soldiers take charge of battle, inspire their fellow troops, and lead them to victory.

Convergence features an emphasis on cards that spot various subtypes on your field. In the hands of the capable Captain Phasma, you can quickly attach the weapon and suddenly have two dangerous dice out on the battlefield, ready to resolve on your next turn.

Captain Phasma isn’t the only leader who can motivate her troops. The

(Convergence, 30 ) is a two-cost support and it's the perfect way to motivate your Stormtroopers. Anytime you activate the Imperial Officer, you may turn one of your trooper dice to any side! This officer can turn even the most errant trooper into a pinpoint marksman, or give experts like Captain Phasma the push they need to produce their best die face.

Leaders do more than inspire troopers, though. They have the wits and the skill to do what’s necessary and come out ahead.

(Convergence, 24) is a common card that invites you to spot a leader and put your opponent in a difficult choice. Either you deal two damage to your opponent’s most important character, or you steal one resource. With proper planning, you can even play this card when your opponent is out of resources, forcing them to damage their character and giving you a significant advantage in your ongoing conflict.

Inspiration Through Action

Leaders and troopers are far more than just enforcers looking to have their way. Leaders and troopers can inspire, find the light when all hope seems lost, and change the fate of the Galaxy.

(Convergence, 75) was an inspirational figure in the Old Republic, taking action when those around her would prefer passivity. A new version of Padmé enters Convergence with the ability to improve your own dice or deal damage when she needs to—Padmé lets you resolve your dice showing focus sides as if they were indirect damage! It's important to note that this doesn't just affect Padmé’s dice, but every die you control. This can turn a team of

(Convergence, 73), the father of Poe Dameron, would continue to carry this torch of hope and action. Serving as a sergeant during the Galactic Civil War, Kes is another character that acts as both a leader and a trooper. Furthermore, his Action lets you instantly use any number of your trooper dice in the order of your choice! This devastatingly fast assault means that a team of troopers led by Kes can launch a quick and punishing salvo before your opponent even gets a chance to respond.

Troopers go above and beyond the call of duty, sacrificing everything for their cause. When things look dire, you can always turn to

(Convergence, 127), a common card that sees you remove one of your trooper dice to remove any other die. Costing zero resources, Measure for Measure is always playable as long as you have a trooper die on the field, and whether you use it as a desperate measure or a calculated risk, it's a surefire way to mitigate your opponent’s options.

And finally, if you choose to go all in on troopers while fighting for the heroes or the villains of the galaxy, Convergence offers a new battlefield in the form of

(Convergence, 178). While you control this battlefield, you can use its Power Action to quickly activate two characters that share a subtype. While this can be useful for any list, you can then reroll one of those dice if it belongs to a trooper. Action efficiency is essential to gaining an advantage in Star Wars: Destiny, and a Military Camp can help your well-trained troopers come out on top.

Leaders and troopers are soldiers of action in the Star Wars saga.

The conflict between the Jedi and the Sith has defined the Star Wars galaxy for generations: bastions of the light battling scions of the dark. Two opposing sides of the Force, intertwined in a never-ending convergence between good and evil.

One of Convergence’s primary themes focuses on drawing more attention to various subtypes in every color. For Blue, this means an emphasis on Jedi for heroes, and Sith for villains. Join us today as we preview the Jedi and Sith in Convergence, the newest set of boosters for Star Wars™: Destiny!

Ancient Teachings

For generations the Sith operated in the shadows, the dark reflection of the Jedi Order. Harnessing the power of the dark side, the Sith rose to power and for a time controlled the entire galaxy thanks to the leadership of Emperor Palpatine and his closest advisors.

(Convergence, 6). This common card allows you to spot a Sith to turn another character’s dice to any side. While of course you can use this to disrupt your opponent’s characters, you can also turn an ally’s dice to more beneficial sides. While the Sith lust for power, they understand the importance of temporary alliances, and a tale of tragedy can be used to motivate those working with them.

In the time of the Old Republic, the Jedi Knights were defenders of peace and justice throughout the galaxy. Before they were wiped out in the twilight of the Clone Wars, the Jedi acted as warriors and generals, defending freedom and democracy from the Separatist threat while hunting down the Sith Lord pulling the strings.

(Convergence, 54 ) is not a Jedi herself, but she has plenty of ways to support the wise masters. After you activate a Jedi, you may resolve one of Ahsoka's character or upgrade dice, even resolving it as though it didn't have a modifier. Considering that modifiers make up half of Ahsoka's dice results, it's invaluable to team Ahsoka up with a Jedi. At eight points for a normal version or eleven for an elite, Ahsoka could join an elite

While the non-Jedi qualifier may be somewhat restricting, die removal is a powerful ability in Star Wars: Destiny, and at the cost of one resource, Disciplined Mind is one of the most effective mitigation tools in the game.

“Your destiny lies along a different path from mine. The Force will be with you, always.”
–Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: A New Hope

Good news, Star Wars™: Destiny fans!

The upcoming release of the Convergence Booster Packs means that the game's ongoing Galactic Qualifiers will soon be bigger and better than ever.

The Galactic Qualifiers are a series of large, convention-based events for Star Wars: Destiny that have proven immensely successful, drawing hundreds of players from all across the globe to compete for custom prizes and an invitation to the Star Wars: Destiny World Championship.

This season's events have already kicked off with tournaments in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Spain, and there's plenty more to come. Now, we're pleased to share that with the introduction of the Convergence Booster Packs, these exciting events are going to be further energized by the introduction and integration of new formats and prizes!

Rotation Brings a Refresh

As the release of Convergence ushers forth the game's first Standard rotation, we will see the first real distinction between the game's Standard and Infinite formats. This means, we'll see real differences between all three of the game's constructed formats—Standard, Infinite, and Trilogy—and the upcoming Galactic Qualifiers will each feature more than one of these formats.

As a result, these top-level events will gain even more energy as players look to explore the different options available in each format, and you will find even more ways to enjoy your dice-and-card battles over the course of a Galactic Qualifier weekend.

Organizers can supplement their Standard format Galactic Qualifiers with Galactic Qualifiers run in the Trilogy or Infinite formats. You'll even see a number of Galactic Qualifiers run as Sealed events!

Meanwhile, you'll find a wealth of new Convergence-themed prizes introduced to these upcoming Galactic Qualifiers by the end of March. The Galactic Qualifiers have continued to feature the Prize Stations that were so well-received throughout the last season, and you'll see their prizes refreshed, as well, along with new playmats to accompany each of the four supported formats.

The release of Convergence will also see the debut of new spot-gloss cards for the Prize Station, as will the release of each new set. For example, you've already seen the new Jabba the Hutt (Convergence, 36) in our announcement of the Convergence Booster Packs, and if you win enough prize tickets during your participation at an upcoming Galactic Qualifier, you'll eventually be able to redeem them for a stunning spot-gloss, plastic version of this notorious gangster, complete with his ability to search the top of your deck for a bounty or Yellow event!

Claim the Greatest Bounty of Them All

Despite the beauty of the custom prizes you'll find at the Prize Station, the greatest prize at the Galactic Qualifiers isn't even one you can see. Each player who manages to go undefeated through all six Swiss rounds of a Galactic Qualifier main event, regardless of the format, wins a reserved seat at the upcoming Star Wars: Destiny World Championship in October!

That means the Galactic Qualifiers are your pathway to a whole galaxy of adventure—perhaps even your first step along the Jedi path. Will you be the one to battle your way to the World Championship, conquer the galaxy's greatest players, and steer the galaxy's planets toward the light or dark side of the Force? The upcoming events are your chance to find out.

This also means that each Galactic Qualifier is a fantastic opportunity for a young Padawan to be trained in the ways of the Force. You'll see the greatest decks on display, and you'll find them played with top-level precision. If you've ever been curious just how far this game can take you, there's no better place to advance your training than at a Galactic Qualifier.

Adventure and Exploration

There's plenty of reason to enjoy an upcoming Galactic Qualifier even if you're not the most competitive fan of Star Wars: Destiny. Each event will feature Escape Pods in one or more of the game's various formats—Standard, Trilogy, Infinite, or Sealed.

These eight-player events feature three Swiss rounds each and reward you with prize tickets based on your performance. They're great for casual players—or even just for casual decks. You can explore new strategies, try crazy new deck designs, or even get in some last-minute testing ahead of the main event (depending on the event schedule).

Either way, you'll earn prize tickets that you can use toward the same Prize Station prizes as participants in the main event, and most Galactic Qualifiers will offer you plenty of time to try both the main event and the Escape Pods, meaning you'll find every Galactic Qualifier is a weekend full of Star Wars: Destiny action, regardless of your status as veteran or beginner, or your preference for casual or competitive play.

The Star Wars galaxy is a place of opportunity. With proper training and equipment, a hero can destroy a superweapon, or a villain can embrace their destiny and rule the galaxy. But the galaxy is also fraught with danger: bounties, injuries and more can hamper characters and lead them down a path to failure and defeat.

Join us today as we preview downgrades in Convergence, a new set of boosters for Star Wars™: Destiny!

Downgrades are a new card type introduced in Convergence that attach to your opponent’s characters, representing everything from grievous injuries that affect your opponent’s health and dice to bounties that offer an enticing reward when the attached character is defeated.

The Punishing One

As long as there are credits to be earned, bounty hunters will always have a place in the galaxy. While the Outer Rim is flush with notorious hunters trying to earn a little profit, an elite few have risen above the rabble and established a reputation of perfection.

        };
        $('#11BBE').colorbox(opts);
      });

(Convergence, 35) is one of these hunters, and he enters Star Wars: Destiny ready to track down any character, dead or alive. Dengar’s die has three different sides that deal damage, and the Ruthless Tracker can also deal one damage to a character with a bounty when he activates. Bounties are a new subtype of downgrades that offer you some reward when the attached character is defeated, such as the card draw featured on

      <a id="A95E" href="https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/04/1b/041b711a-de1a-4091-8812-6347f3e423c1/swd16_common_death-mark.png" data-colorbox-rel="ffg-lightbox"

        };
        $('#A95E').colorbox(opts);
      });

(Convergence, 39). And embracing bounties is a theme you'll find throughout this bounty hunter's cards, not only with Dengar himself, but with the equipment he uses to hunt down his quarries.

      });

(Convergence, 48) is Dengar’s signature ship, and you can ready this ship when a character with a bounty is brought in. Dengar knows his ship better than anyone, and he can immediately activate Punishing One when this happens, ready to track down more prey. With three damage-dealing sides, harnessing the power of the Punishing One is a sure way to bring in your bounties.

Of course sometimes the hunt requires a more personal touch.

      Dengar’s Fire Blade

(Convergence, 50) is a weapon that automatically deals one damage to any character with a bounty when it enters the field. While it is a damaging weapon in its own right, it also synergizes well with Dengar, letting you turn the bounty hunter’s die to any side showing a one, including his melee damage which can be modified with the Fire Blade’s massive melee damage modifier.

While these upgrades encourage you to stack your deck with bounties, these downgrades do far more than just synergize with Dengar. For example,

      Enticing Reward

(Convergence, 40) is a bounty with a massive reward for bringing in your prey. While Dengar’s Fire Blade is an expensive upgrade, Enticing Reward lets you bypass that cost, letting you play any equipment or weapon from your hand or discard pile for free when you defeat the attached character. The more expensive weapons you have, the more value Enticing Reward gains, perhaps even letting you gain the legendary

          iframe: true,

          innerWidth: 360
        };
        $('#528F').colorbox(opts);
      });

(Way of the Force, 142) as a reward for your bounty!

Shackles and Scars

Bounties aren’t the only type of downgrade featured in Convergence, either. Abilities, injuries and equipment can hamper your opponent’s characters, and give you the edge in a duel.

      Mind Extraction

(Convergence, 5) is a Blue villain downgrade that puts your opponent in a difficult situation. While Mind Extraction is attached to a character, they lose all of their non-special abilities. This essentially blanks characters like

      Thrawn

(Empire at War, 4), negating their primary effectiveness. However, getting rid of Mind Extraction is also a tax, forcing you to exhaust the attached character and giving up on their dice for a turn. If you can spot an essential character that has been enhanced with upgrades, Mind Extraction can halt your opponent’s momentum as they are forced to deal with its effect in one way or another.

                             class="padding product-feature" />

While Mind Extraction is a direct effect on your opponent’s character,

      Secrets Laid Bare

(Convergence, 105) takes a more subtle approach. Any time the attached character is activated your opponent reveals three random cards from their hand. At no cost, Secrets Laid Bare is a low-risk play that can give you vital information during the battle.

These downgrades are building blocks for a deck featuring

      <a id="D1C0" href="https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/e5/58/e558d6ab-d641-4bd3-82b4-6bb9f0fb2b00/swd16_asajj-ventress.png" data-colorbox-rel="ffg-lightbox"

(Convergence, 1). With three damage sides, Ventress can constantly attack your opponent, and if those opponents have a downgrade attached, Ventress can further disrupt your opponent’s plans by discarding a card to remove one of their character or upgrade dice. With the ability to both deal massive damage and remove dice, Asajj Ventress is one of the most dangerous characters in Convergence.

The duels of the Star Wars galaxy take their toll, victory doesn’t come without a cost and characters can become injured in search of their destiny.

      });

(Convergence, 121) restricts the attached character to only resolving one of their character dice during a turn, and that die cannot be modified. Even an elite

These downgrades are powerful, and if played early can impact the entire game. Luckily, Convergence also features answers to this new card type.

      <a id="12E22" href="https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/a9/92/a9922b48-fa88-4852-bf56-cb1999e94fd1/swd16_unshackle.png" data-colorbox-rel="ffg-lightbox"

      });

(Convergence, 167) is a one-cost event that simply allows you to discard a downgrade. With the Ambush keyword, you can quickly unshackle your character and get them right back in the action, negating any penalty the downgrade inflicted or denying your opponent an enticing bounty.

Convergence of Power

Downgrades add a new dynamic to Star Wars: Destiny, letting you affect your opponent’s characters in brand-new ways. Through careful play, you can give your own characters an edge in the epic duels of the Star Wars galaxy. Will you discover your destiny when Convergence releases in the first quarter of 2019?

Happy (belated) New Year, card game fans! For this designer journal, Nate French decided to take a cue from the season and asked a number of the FFG card game team members if they had any New Year’s gaming resolutions for 2019.

The question was left open-ended, allowing each designer to comment as gamers and competitors, as designers in a general sense, or as the designers of their specific game line. Here’s a peek into the card game team’s gaming lives for the upcoming year!

Matt Newman

My resolution this year involves writing as much as physically possible (at least, until I fall asleep on top of my keyboard, anyway). As the lead developer for Arkham Horror: The Card Game, my job requires not just card design work, but also a substantial amount of creative writing, as well as story planning and outlining. When I first joined the card game team in 2012, I had no idea how much fiction writing would become an integral part of my workflow. While creative writing has always been one of my core interests, I never thought I would have the chance to flex those muscles in a professional capacity. I’ve spent the last couple years trying to improve my writing skills as much as possible, not just for the sake of future Arkham products, but also for my own personal satisfaction.

What I noticed last year is that I have a tendency to hit “invisible barriers” every now and then while I am writing. Sometimes it’s just a thought or a sentence that I can’t quite express the right way. Other times it’s a whole story beat that eludes me. My goal this year is to reach the point where I can crash through these barriers without a second thought—or, at the very least, find a way to work around them so they don’t completely stall my word count. Last November I participated in NaNoWriMo, otherwise known as National Novel Writing Month, as a self-improvement exercise to help me break through these invisible barriers. The story I ended up with is one I am proud of, and I hope to take the lessons I’ve learned and apply them to my writing in Arkham. I am also hoping to write so much in this upcoming year that when November rolls around again, I can crush NaNoWriMo in 2019!

Danny Schaefer

My personal gaming resolution, inspired by Nate French, is to “get good” at chess. (That is, reach a point where most people who play me would say “yeah, he’s pretty good.”) It’s a game I’ve known how to play as long as I can remember, but never really got into. I’ve been playing a lot more the last few months and finding it fascinating. Some concepts, like material and tempo, translate reasonably well from the board and card games I’ve played. Other ideas, like positional tactics, feel totally foreign to me, and it’s been fun to try to develop in those areas.

I think chess also holds some important lessons for design, which I’ll be looking to incorporate in the new year. In terms of rules and game mechanics, chess is far simpler than most board games I’ve played, and certainly than any LCG. Yet it is a premier competitive game that supports an unmatched level of study and analysis. This is an important notion—the idea that strategic depth is not contingent on mechanical complexity—that I’ll try to carry forward in my own designs.

                             class="padding product-feature" />

Aaron Haltom

While 2019 will be all about the Convergence cycle for Star Wars™: Destiny players, we developers basically work a full year in advance, so I’m currently looking ahead to the game's tenth set, which is the start of the cycle that will release in 2020. These are my goals for that cycle:

Push the envelope. Now that Star Wars: Destiny is more than two years old, some of the novelty has worn off and much of the original design space has already been well explored. As the game matures, it becomes necessary to carve out new design spaces. The Legacies cycle achieved this with the addition of a new symbol (indirect damage) and a new card type (plots). The Convergence cycle endeavors to do this with the addition of downgrades and tribal mechanics. To keep the game fresh and constantly evolving, I am looking to do even more in Set 10 to shake up the game, while of course still honoring what makes Star Wars: Destiny so special in the first place.

Offer exciting new playstyles. While the meta has been incredibly diverse over the last year in terms of the teams that players have been bringing to tournaments, all these various decks can really be boiled down to a small number of archetypes. Most of the decks fall under the Aggro or Vehicle archetypes, both of which have the same game plan: throw down damage faster than your opponent. I would like to see more of the other archetypes that put a wrinkle in that game plan, like Mill, Control, Combo, or Mid-Range, as well as perhaps even opening up a whole new archetype.

Connect to the players. I would like to get to more conventions this year and make an effort to meet some of the players and content creators that make the Star Wars: Destiny community so great. If you run into me at an event, don't be shy! I'll be happy to talk with you and hear what you'd like to see in the game.

Brad Andres

Over the last several years, I’ve found myself buying games that I am excited to play, but then I never find the time to actually get them to the table. This year, I plan on making the time to try and play a game I’ve never played before each and every week. My motivation for this comes from wanting to expand my horizons, both as a gamer and as a designer. Exploring a greater variety of games will give me greater perspective on design as a whole and hopefully provide further inspiration for my work! I’m looking forward to updating my progress on Twitter as well!

Michael Boggs

My gaming resolution is to play and study more games that excel at marrying theme to mechanics.

As a gamer, I’m always focused more on the mechanics of a game than the theme. No matter if the game is about ninjas or dinosaurs or aliens or 16th century France (with the exception of games about ninja dinosaur aliens in 16th century France), at the end of the day, most games boil down in my mind to a process of moving cubes and tokens, rolling dice, and playing cards. And that’s usually enough for me. If great art or a good story accompanies the experience, cool, but I rarely feel that these things affect my enjoyment of the game.

However, as a designer, I know that for many, theme is wildly important to the experience, and having a theme that is disassociated from the mechanics can ruin their enjoyment. Conversely, having a strong theme that integrates seamlessly with the core system can often make a game that has less than stellar mechanics seem greater than the sum of its parts.

Throughout this year, I plan to play games that do a good job of merging theme with mechanics. My hope is that in studying games that do this well, I’ll refine my ability to do this for the games I work on, and craft more powerful thematic experiences for the players who seek them.

                             class="padding product-feature" />

Nate French

My gaming resolution for this year is to take advantage of an opportunity this summer to fulfill a life dream and play in a World Series of Poker event.

I began dabbling with poker in 2005 (back in the “boom” era), and I have been playing and studying regularly since 2013. I’ve always thought in the back of my mind that I’d like to play a World Series at some point, but never quite pulled the trigger. A number of circumstances have come together to make it clear that this is the year for me to take the plunge.

To prepare, I have been playing more, studying more, and am also now learning from a professional coach. My goal is to do all I can to immerse myself in the game over the next five months. This type of focus has re-connected me with everything I love and obsess over about games: the communities, the metagame, the analysis, the sense of working at something and getting better over time. Whether it’s poker, chess, the A Game of Thrones CCG, or the newest game I’m working on, I am happiest when a game rises up like this and consumes me.

Regardless of the results (for variance will ultimately be variance), I feel that this experience will help me grow as a competitor and as a designer, and I am immensely grateful for the path this year has placed in front of me.

Thanks for reading, and may you succeed with all of your own New Year’s resolutions!

From the Jedi of the Old Republic to the troopers of the First Order to the scoundrels and scum banding together to survive the tyrannical rule of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy pulls together heroes and villains of a similar creed and philosophy. Whether by choice or by force, these groups can impact the future of the galaxy itself, and when these characters meet in a convergence of power, who will come out on top?

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the Obi-Wan Kenobi Starter Set, the General Grievous Starter Set, and Convergence booster packs for Star Wars™: Destiny!

As the start of a new block of sets, Convergence introduces plenty of new themes, and even a new card type, into Star Wars: Destiny! Look for a focus on character subtypes like Jedi, trooper, and leader, as well as an emphasis on new plots and powerful downgrades to hinder your foes!

On the Run

Since the launch of Star Wars: Destiny, upgrades have always been an essential part of deckbuilding. By attaching these cards to your character, you can roll out additional dice every turn and receive other helpful benefits. Convergence introduces a dark reflection to these enhancements in the form of downgrades—cards that you attach to your opponent’s characters. A separate card type from upgrades, every character can have up to three downgrades attached to them. Naturally, these downgrades hinder your opponent in some way, with cards like

(Convergence, 161) permanently reducing a character’s health. Even the most stalwart characters can fall to downgrades, and each color has these cards in their own flavor.

For example, Yellow receives a cavalcade of bounties in Convergence. These are downgrades that provide a bonus when the attached character is defeated, a helpful reward for bringing in your target.

(Convergence, 39) lets you draw three cards when you defeat the attached character. Naturally, you could attach both of these downgrades to your primary target, giving you a massive boost of momentum when you fulfill the contract. (Convergence, 36) is not a crime lord you want to cross, as he has little trouble making your life difficult. If you include the Influential Kingpin on your team, you can search the top four cards of your deck to grab a bounty or Yellow event every time you activate Jabba, giving you plenty of opportunities downgrade your opponent’s characters and plenty of bonuses when your bounty hunters defeat them!

Overwhelming Firepower

Convergence places a heavy emphasis on what kind of characters you're including on your team, going deeper then Red, Blue, or Yellow, and hero, villain, or neutral. Are you using mystic Jedi harnessing the power of the Force, or shifty scoundrels using their wit and skills to outsmart their foes?

Or maybe you're relying on the pure firepower of troopers like the terrifying

This Party’s Over

While Convergence allows you to overwhelm your foe with the firepower of the First Order, you can also take a more meditative approach and build a deck focusing on the ancient Jedi Knights of the Old Republic. What better way to start than with a true Master of the Council?

(Convergence, 56) enters Convergence with three melee damage sides and a Power Action that allows you to search the top four cards of your deck for an upgrade and play it! While this obviously lets you outfit your characters with new weapons and abilities, they get an additional boost if they are a Jedi, in the form of an extra shield. This is a great way to gain action efficiency, playing important cards while building the defenses of your characters.

With two sides showing melee damage and a third showing modified melee damage, the lightsaber is the perfect companion for Mace Windu, and can always be moved to him as a Power Action. Its special ability is a callback to the original Empire at War version of
