Announcing the End of Star Wars: Destiny

Star Wars™: Destiny launched in 2016 with the innovative Duel Dice System, enthralling players with game mechanics that were quick to learn, but difficult to master. Bringing iconic Star Wars characters, locations, ships, and weapons to life on your tabletop, Star Wars: Destiny let you step into a galaxy far, far away through nine sets of booster packs, six starter sets, two draft sets, and a two-player starter set. These epic skirmishes have cultivated some of the most passionate fans in gaming.

We’re extremely proud of what we have accomplished, however, the upcoming Covert Missions booster set will be the last product produced for Star Wars: Destiny. Star Wars: Destiny products will continue to be sold on the FFG website as long as stock remains.

As Star Wars: Destiny draws to a close, Organized Play for this game is also coming to an end. We hope to have you join us for the final Star Wars: Destiny World Championship, taking place on May 1–3, 2020, at the Fantasy Flight Games Center in Roseville, Minnesota, and serving as the ultimate culmination of skill for Star Wars: Destiny players. Tickets will become available on Wednesday, January 15 at 12:00 PM Central Time, and can be found here! Players with reserved seats can claim their seats by filling out the form here.

Even if you can’t join us for the Star Wars: Destiny World Championship, one final kit is coming to local retailers near you—the Echoes of Destiny kit. Launching after the World Championship, this kit supports a series of trilogy sealed tournaments, as well as a special tournament that will provide participants with one copy of every card and die from Wild Horizons, the unreleased tenth set of dice and cards for Star Wars: Destiny. We’ll have more information to share about the Star Wars: Destiny World Championship and the Echoes of Destiny kit in coming months!

Star Wars: Destiny gave me my dream job, countless epic games, traveling across the country to events, and, most importantly, the people. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand at conventions and tournaments what an amazing community has formed because of this game. I thank all of you for your passion, dedication, and support - you’re one of the main reasons why this chapter of my life has been so great.

When I discovered FFG would start working on a Star Wars collectible card and dice game, I was intrigued and surprised. Star Wars? Awesome! Collectible? There’s nothing like the thrill of ripping open boosters. Cards? I’ve had an obsession with card games for 25 years. Dice? Well, three out of four isn’t bad. Dice and I have had a rocky relationship, so I was skeptical that I would enjoy the game. When I tried a prototype, my skepticism seemed justified - after playing a few times, I just wasn’t feeling it.

Several months later, I tried a completely redesigned prototype (an early version of the current game) and something just clicked. It was elegant, highly interactive, fast-paced, and fun. In addition, the depth of strategic and tactical play was quickly apparent to me. Randomness was still a factor, but there were so many ways to manipulate dice that I felt I could control the randomness. As soon as that game finished, I knew I was hooked.

Ever since that day, Star Wars: Destiny has been a big part of my life. It has provided countless hours of enjoyment and unforgettable memories. I’ve met and worked with so many amazing and passionate people all because of this game. It has truly been a pleasure and honor to work on Star Wars: Destiny, and I’ll forever be grateful to have had this unbelievable opportunity—but at the same time, I can’t wait to start work on new projects at FFG. Even though the development of this game is coming to a close, the game itself will not end—each time a deck is shuffled, each time a die is rolled, each time a player tastes victory, the game will live on.

In the words of Luke Skywalker, “No one’s ever really gone.”

Whatever path you find yourself on, aligning with these rogues can give your team the boost they need to find victory in the battles of Star Wars™: Destiny.

Covert Missions introduces 160 new cards to the game, placing an emphasis on alternate win conditions as well as Pilots, Jedi, Sith, Scavengers, and Pirates who can alter the fate of the galaxy.

The Life of a Scavenger

Scavengers permeate the galaxy, getting by on scraps and pieces while striking deals with others to get the credits they need to survive another day in the Outer Rim. While these Scavengers may seem innocuous enough, they can be vital assets to your team, especially with their own set of unique skills and equipment.

Nar Shaddaa is the perfect place to disappear in the galaxy, a hub of scum and villainy filled with scavengers and thieves just waiting for opportunity to strike. The Nar Shadaa Thief (Covert Missions, 129) won’t be dealing much damage without any upgrades, but can still pester your opponent by stealing their valuable resources. But that’s not all this Scavenger has in store. Upgrading the Thief with a Magna-Glove (Covert Missions, 145) can let you steal your opponent’s weapons and equipment right off of them! And if a Scavenger like the thief is around, you can immediately turn the tables on your foe!

But the Nar Shaddaa Thief isn’t the only Scavenger to be found in Covert Missions. The Jawa Junk Dealer (Covert Missions, 147) is a master negotiator in his little pocket of the galaxy. Whenever you activate the Junk Dealer, you can play a Gray neutral card at a discounted price. Using this ability for a Harmless Trick (Covert Missions, 150), is a surefire way to remove a die for free, letting these little Jawas throw a wrench into your opponent’s plans! Of course, Jawas rarely work alone. In their roaming Sandcrawlers (Covert Missions, 155), an entire clan of Jawas can be transported from outpost to outpost. In Star Wars: Destiny, a Sandcrawler can provide a whole army of Jawas for your team, provided you're able to discard the top 4 cards of your deck. With a Sandcrawler on your side, you’ll have no shortage of Jawa Junk Dealers making deals across the galaxy.

Scavengers get by however they can in the galaxy, their Rogue Tendencies (Covert Missions, 135) ensuring they live to see another day.

A Pirate’s Life

While Scavengers search for scraps, Pirates take what is theirs, travelling the galaxy is search of fortune to call their own. At the dawn of the New Republic, the Warbird Gang took to the stars, looking to make their mark with a strategic alliance with the First Order. The gang's leader, Kragan Gorr (Covert Missions, 39) made them one of the fiercest pirate gangs in the galaxy. A ruthless entrepreneur, Gorr gives you the opportunity to rob your opponent of their resources if they aren’t prepared to defend themselves, and can overwhelm your opponent if you have other Pirates on your team. His partner in crime Synara San (Covert Missions, 41), perfectly pairs with Gorr to form an elite team. Synara is a Pirate who is just as ruthless as Kragan, forcing your opponent to discard cards from their hand if they have no dice showing damage. By robbing your opponent of their resources and cards, they’ll be left with few actions when the Warbird Gang is around!

Of course, what good is a pirate without a ship? Adding a Pirate Ship (Covert Missions, 49) to your team lets the Warbird Gang do what they do best, acting as one in the pursuit of fame and fortune. By using the Pirate Ship’s ability, you can clear your opponent’s dice pool of damage-dealing die, freeing Kragan Gorr and Synara San to use their abilities or coordinate an Opportune Strike (Covert Missions, 46).

Whatever your plan, the Warbird Gang will be there for opportunity and profit. As long as you have the means to remove damage dice, your Pirates will thrive and lead you to overwhelming victory.

Roguish Tendencies

Whether you’re a pirate, a scavenger, or all around scoundrel, everyone needs to get paid to get by in the galaxy. Is this the path you’ll walk when Covert Missions releases in the first quarter of 2020?

Serving as a shield against the darkness in the hands of the Jedi or as a display of power for a Sith, lightsabers identify many Force users throughout the galaxy. These lightsabers don’t define their user, but they are an essential tool in both the pursuit of power and the defense of justice.

Weapons of War

The Clone Wars took a heavy toll on every Jedi leading their troops into battle. The most valiant of heroes can falter under the weight of war, even a Jedi. Pong Krell (Covert Missions, 3), a legend on the battlefield, eventually crumbled under this weight, secretly swearing allegiance to Count Dooku while leading his clones into battle. Because of his dual allegiance, Pong Krell can include up to four different Blue hero cards in his deck. This gives him an edge up on other villains, and he can even cycle these cards back into his deck while dealing damage whenever you activate him!

A proficient warrior on the battlefield, Pong Krell can wield multiple double-bladed lightsabers with his four arms. Upgrading Pong Krell with his Lightsabers (Covert Missions, 17) makes Krell a huge threat to any who would stand against him. Adding an additional die to your roll makes the lightsaber twice as effective, and with multiple damage-dealing sides, your opponent will have their hands full with this deadly imposter. Krell doesn’t even need his lightsabers to disrupt his enemies—a massive Quad Slam (Covert Missions, 9) can put four characters temporarily out of commission, giving Krell the opportunity to go on the offensive.

Pong Krell isn’t the only Jedi the Clone Wars took a toll on. One of the most powerful Jedi ever, Anakin Skywalker (Covert Missions, 53) is a dedicated mentor and a true friend. By moving shields to apprentices, Anakin can refill your hand and give you the tools you need to win any battle.

Of course, Anakin would never go anywhere without his iconic Lightsaber (Covert Missions, 53). This blade would one day find its way to the capable hands of Rey, but it has its own history in the Clone Wars. While playing the Lightsaber gives an opponent’s character a shield, it’s sure to melt away quickly with the lightsaber’s three damage sides, and Anakin himself can move the shield with his own ability!

While the Clone Wars led to the destruction of many Jedi, a small group did survive, wandering the galaxy looking for a new purpose. Kanan Jarrus (Covert Missions, 55) was one of these Jedi, eventually finding a new family in his fellow Spectres. Kanan naturally synergizes well with his friends, who lower his point cost when placed on a team together. Kanan can also tap into the power of the Force to manipulate die sides and put his team in a favorable position.

Even Kanan’s Lightsaber (Covert Missions, 68) delves into the space of die manipulation, both its own dice and Kanan’s. Of course, the Lightsaber also has three damage sides, making it a damage-dealing machine even without changing its sides.

A Shadow War

The Clone Wars are ultimately only the surface level of a conflict that has been raging for centuries, between the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi are guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy, who found themselves on the frontlines of battle during the Clone Wars. Because of this danger and their duty, every apprentice must undergo the Jedi Trials (Covert Missions, 65) before becoming a guardian. If your apprentice character can grow and learn from their masters, they can gain the Jedi trait, heal damage, and find themselves ready for another fight. The Jedi Trials are a difficult task for any apprentice to take on, but the Clone Wars calls for great sacrifices to be made.

The Sith, on the other hand, operate with smaller numbers. The Rule of Two (Covert Missions, 12) is vital to their very survival. Working from the shadows, the Sith must maintain this rule to avoid attention and grow their power. While this plot can turn against you should one of your members fall, it can also give rise to great power—power enough to slay Jedi and take back the galaxy.

Apprentices on both sides of the conflict must learn from those who came before them. Bestow Wisdom (Covert Missions, 107) can allow apprentices to gain an influx of power from their masters, and properly utilizing Infuse the Force (Covert Missions, 110) provides different advantages for Jedi, Sith, and their apprentices.

The Pull of Power

Lightsabers are the iconic tools of a trained Force user, but they are only one part of a bigger whole. Those with the knowledge of the Force pass on what they have learned to their apprentices, so a new generation can fight against the darkness, or embrace that darkness to gain further power. What side will you pick when Covert Missions launches in the first quarter of 2020?

Ghosts in the Sky

In the early days of the Rebellion, Spectre Cell ignited a spark of hope that would eventually lead to the destruction of the Galactic Empire, and they make their return in Covert Missions!

Hera Syndulla (Covert Missions, 70) showcases the new Piloting keyword found in Covert Missions, essentially coupling her to a vehicle that can be referenced by other cards. Hera herself possesses one of these abilities, letting you spend two resources to ready the vehicle she is piloting!

Hera can pilot any vehicle you control, but she works particularly well with the new version of the Ghost (Covert Missions, 83), a vehicle with heavy firepower that lets you ready a Spectre when it enters play, and provides plenty of protection to its pilot in the form of additional shields!

But Hera isn’t the only Spectre who can pilot the Ghost. Sabine Wren (Covert Missions, 89) is a resourceful character who grows stronger when you have a blue die, a red die, and another yellow die in your pool. If she pilots the Ghost, you’re already at an advantage with a red die, and Sabine can give it a Custom Paint Job ( Covert Missions, 101) to shore up the color scheme of her tools!

While Sabine gains advantages from the Ghost, she can of course pilot her own customized TIE Fighter (Covert Missions, 100). Though the TIE Fighter belongs to Sabine, it grants additional benefits to any Spectre willing to pilot it!

With all these new tools, the Spectre Cell (Covert Missions, 104) is stronger than ever, and with this plot, you can make even more room on your team for your friends and allies.

A Sense of Duty

As the Rebel Alliance rose on the strength of pilots, so too did the First Order. Elrik Vonreg ( Covert Missions, 22) is an ace pilot, striking fear into all who spot his ship on the battlefield. Any ship with Vonreg piloting it is immune to having its dice removed by your opponent’s effects, keeping them safe until you are ready to resolve them. And with three damage dealing sides, Vonreg is a dangerous character even without a Vehicle.

However, should he pilot his iconic TIE Interceptor (Covert Missions, 31), he gains additional advantages. Namely, Vonreg's TIE Interceptor has the ability to destroy your opponent’s vehicles by removing the its die. With Vonreg at the helm of his ship, no vehicle is safe from the fury of the First Order.

Not every pilot can be the best in the galaxy, but luckily quantity can be just as effective as quality. The Galactic Empire and their Imperial Navy was filled with pilots ready to fight for the Emperor. Adding an Imperial Pilot (Covert Missions, 24) to your team gives you access to piloting for only 6 points. Though the Pilot lacks a die, they can still manipulate your red vehicle die by turning it to a side of your choice. If you need consistency in your dice, there are few better options than some of the Imperial Academy's finest pilots.

Of course, not every battle goes according to plan, and should your vehicles fail you, a pilot can always Eject (Covert Missions, 149) to both recover some health and gain a few shields in the process. This can grant a character extended life, and give your team the boost they need to defeat their enemies.

Pilots can gain additional advantages throughout Covert Missions. Having a piloted vehicle gives you access to Assail (Covert Missions, 117), one of the best removal cards in the game. If you still want access to these cards without putting a natural Pilot on your team, you can always make one of your characters Licensed to Fly (Covert Missions, 128) to give anyone on the field the Pilot trait and Piloting ability!

Developer Jeremy Zwirn Introduces a New Batch of Star Wars: Destiny Holocron Updates

The Star Wars™: Destiny Holocron documents have been updated and are now available to download! You can find these new Holocron documents under the Support section of the Star Wars: Destiny page.

This update follows the recent results of the Star Wars: Destiny World Championship and implements some adjustments that aim to shake up the current Organized Play metagame. Hello Star Wars: Destiny players!

This year’s World Championship was an incredible event that had an amazing turnout of 427 players! Thank you to everyone who traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota and helped make it such a memorable event. I really enjoy meeting players and getting to see firsthand how amazing the community is. There were numerous close games and interesting matchups throughout the tournament, and congratulations to Andrew Rothermel for taking home the trophy!

Overall, I feel the metagame is in a fairly good place, with many different decks making the top cut at Worlds and no single deck becoming dominant. However, since it’s been five months since the last set, Spark of Hope, was released and we’re currently in the midst of the Prime Championship season, I feel it's a good time to update the Holocrons with the goal of invigorating the metagame. I’m doing this in two ways: by adding six cards to the restricted list, and by using the Balance of the Force to reduce the point values of twelve Legacies block characters. Errata will only be used when deemed necessary and only if there’s no other option.

Fateful Companions

Hero droids has been one of the best decks ever since Spark of Hope became tournament legal. The power and consistency of the deck is unquestionable, and it has won many high-level events. The plot Fateful Companions (Spark of Hope, 111) allows the deck to have some very explosive turns, which can be difficult for opponents to hinder. The raw power and often confusing timing interactions of Fateful Companions makes it a good candidate for the restricted list. Even with C-3PO (Spark of Hope, 77) on the restricted list, I feel hero droids will still be competitive without needing this plot.

Delve and Vader’s Fist

Vader’s Fist (Across the Galaxy, 13) is one of the most powerful cards in the game, even at the cost of five resources. Using Delve (Legacies, 92) to play Vader’s Fist for free is currently one of the best combos and can really swing games, especially on the first turn. Adding both cards to the restricted list eliminates this interaction and helps tone down the power level of various villain support decks.

No Answer and Resistance Ring

Arguably the two best archetypes, hero droids and villain supports, are both affected by this update, and other archetypes will surely become more competitive. The duo of No Answer (Convergence, 128) and Resistance Ring (Convergence, 87) gives hero mill a powerful engine that can be arduous and frustrating to play against. The restricted list now breaks up this highly effective interaction while maintaining the viability of mill decks.

Theed Palace

Theed Palace (Across the Galaxy, 159) is the go-to battlefield for many competitive decks and its ubiquity diminishes the decision of which battlefield to fight on. Its resource generation each round helps fuel some of the highest costed and most powerful cards in the game. While it doesn’t create a problematic combo with another card, the restricted list can also be used as a tool to help balance the metagame by restricting cards that are used in many of the top decks, like Theed Palace. In the future, if more cards are restricted in this way, choosing which restricted card to use for your deck may become another interesting decision during deckbuilding.

Balance of the Force

When the Infinite Holocron was updated for the release of Convergence earlier this year, it reduced the point values of numerous characters from the Awakenings block. Many players appreciated the reduction of point values and it gave new life to some characters that previously saw little to no competitive play.

This update follows that precedent and reduces the point values of twelve characters from the Legacies block (divided evenly between affiliations and colors). The goal of this update isn’t to push all twelve of these characters far enough that they become top-level characters, but to make them more appealing for both casual and potentially competitive players. Ideally, some of these characters will make players re-evaluate the current environment and force it to evolve and adapt. Like all cards on the Balance of the Force list, in the future, their point values may be altered, and cards may be added or removed from the list entirely.

I hope this update will make players excited to build new decks or modify current ones and then try them at tournaments. If you plan on going to a Prime Championship, may the Force be with you!

Recently, hundreds of players from all over the world converged at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in Saint Paul, Minnesota to compete in the 2019 October World Championships. Over the course of five days, iconic Star Wars™ characters clashed in epic duels and ace pilots dispatched rival squadrons among the stars, as players took part in a spirited competition packed with thrilling battles.

The Star Wars galaxy was celebrated in style during the 2019 October World Championships and players who achieved greatness through victory were decorated with a wide assortment of prizes. Even those who faced defeat were rewarded for showing true bravery while facing off against formidable forces. To everyone who came out and made this event so special, thank you! We sincerely hope that you enjoyed the experience.

In the end, two incredible players met the challenge and rose to the top. Now that the World Championships have concluded, we must take a moment to recognize our two new champions.

Andrew Rothermel (United States) led his trio of heroic droids—R2-D2, C-3PO, and Chopper—to victory in the Star Wars™: Destiny World Championship! Though a somewhat unassuming bunch, these three loyal companions proved their mettle every step of the way until the final table, where they faced off against the dastardly General Grievous and his group of villainous droids. In victory, Andrew claimed the title of World Champion.

Oliver Pocknell (United Kingdom) expertly commanded his three Imperial aces to seize victory in the Star Wars™: X-Wing World Championship! In a dramatic finale, Oliver suffered a massive setback through losing Darth Vader in an early engagement, but in an amazing showcase of willpower and skill, Oliver guided his two remaining aces through a perilous dogfight with the overwhelming forces of the Rebellion and managed to come out on top.

Congratulations, Andrew and Oliver! You've earned it! Now it's time to take a look back and share some notable statistics from these two World Championship events.

Join us the first week of October for an Ask Me Anything with the developers of two of our biggest Star Wars™ lines. On October 1st, the developers of Star Wars™: Legion will sit down to answer your questions! On October 3rd, it’s the Star Wars: X-Wing developers turn in the hot seat! On October 8th, get your first look at the Ms. Marvel Hero Pack for Marvel Champions: The Card Game! Ms. Marvel will be the second hero pack coming to the game after the Captain America Hero Pack, and this will be the very first time the pack is shown off to the public, be sure not to miss it!

Lessons of Amateur Game Design

Our Designers Reflect on Some of Their Earliest Games

Even the most experienced game designers start somewhere. Before they worked on games like KeyForge and Arkham Horror: The Card Game, our designers began with their own amateur projects. For today's Designer Journal, we asked a few of them to tell us about one of the first games they ever designed, including how young they were when they made it, how the game worked, what inspired them, and what—in loving hindsight—was terrible about their earliest effort? Join us today as they tell us a little about their experiences as amateur game designers!

Starting at about twelve years old, I began to make homebrewed content for my favorite card games and RPGs. I had a couple of ideas for my own card games but nothing that I really wanted to flesh out until I came up with an idea that fused my love of card games and my interest in mythology. You would play a god trying to gather enough power to materialize into human form. You would do this by playing minions that granted you their Faith, monsters that fight for you, and spells to help you dominate the board. My working title for the game was Avatar, which, at the time, was not yet the title of another popular franchise—in other words, this was a long, long time ago!

The elements of the game I was most excited for were two of the game components. To track the god's progress from incorporeal wisp to animated skeleton to full-blown walking deity, I wanted god cards to come with a series of transparencies that you could overlay onto them, with each level “building up” the god in the artwork as well as changing some of their abilities. To track the passage of time through the game, I wanted an ornate wooden wheel with each of the zodiac symbols inscribed in it.

While these components certainly would have been visually striking, they also made my game far too ambitious of a plan. As a budding indie game designer with limited resources, growing up in a time before crowdfunding, there was no way for me to realize such an elaborate vision. Knowing that, I probably shouldn't have spent as much time prototyping it as I did. But my friends and I had a great time getting to play it for a while, and I was pleasantly surprised that the game actually functioned (which is far from given on first iterations, let me tell you). It was massively encouraging to finally get something from my head out in a playable form, and I wish I'd done it simpler and sooner. It put me on the path I'm on today.

Way back in 8th grade when I was a wee lad, Magic: the Gathering changed my world. At the time, I was obsessed with collecting sports cards. Magic cards quickly followed suit and they added a whole new dimension to explore: you could play a game with them! Naturally, I thought it would be cool to combine the two. The result was the first card game I ever designed.

From what I remember, my game was very crude and primitive, made with one pack of handwritten index cards. Originally, I wanted each player to build a team of NBA players, but I hit a road block and couldn't figure out how to implement that into a game. So I simplified it, to say the least. Each player had a deck of cards consisting of offensive cards, such as “Slam Dunk” and “3-Pointer,” and defensive cards, such as “Block” and “Foul.” Players would alternate taking turns. During your turn, you would draw two cards and play one offensive card. Your opponent could react by playing one defensive card. Offensive cards could score points and defensive cards could counter them. The first player to score 50 points won.

The game wasn't all that engaging, so I changed most of the cards to have wacky names to help mask the tedious gameplay. “Slam Dunk” became something like “Triple Whammy Windmill Jam” and “Block” turned into “Stuffed Like a Thanksgiving Turkey.” I even drew pictures and added flavor text consisting of trash talking and “yo momma” jokes. These additions gave my game some life, but I quickly got bored of it and through-the-legs-360-dunked it into the trash bin.

Looking back at that game, while striving for simplicity in gameplay is important, going too far in that direction can make a game feel more like a simulation where players lack meaningful choices, and giving players meaningful choices is integral to designing great games.

I created a lot of games as a child. I mean a lot of games. Most of them were trashed in less than a week as I grew bored of them or became fixated on a new idea. I very rarely crafted something to a form that was actually playable, and even then, I usually just left it on my desk at home, never to be seen or played. However, there was one game I created in middle school that stuck with my friends and me for many months.

As a kid, I was enthralled by real-time strategy games like Starcraft, Command & Conquer, and Age of Empires. I always wanted to play them with my friends, but back in those days that was easier said than done—the internet was a hassle to use, and most of my friends didn’t even have access to it. We’d have to physically carry our computers to one another’s house in order to play together (RIP, LAN parties). My solution was to try and recreate the enjoyment of a real-time strategy game with pen & paper. First, I designed a ton of units, weapons, and buildings. Then I created a huge map on several sheets of graph paper, complete with various types of terrain and control points.

Each of my friends had their own version of the same map with “fog of war” that would obscure the parts of the map that they personally had not explored. Of course, since there was no computer to run the game, I played the role of the gamemaster. I was the only person with access to the “master map” that showed where everyone’s units were without any fog of war. So, as each player took their turns, I would relay to them what they saw as they opened up more of the map, and I would be the one to resolve all combats. I would send messages and status updates to each of the players by slipping notes into their lockers in between classes.

This ended up being the game’s downfall. I’d taken too much responsibility onto myself. I loved playing the gamemaster in tabletop RPGs, and I had assumed this would be no different, but boy, was I wrong! It took a lot of time to sort out all of the players’ orders and commands, even in a turn-based game. Since all of my friends were competing with one another, remaining balanced and impartial was somewhat stressful. It was fun at first, but eventually I burned out. I eventually decided that one of my friends had “won” the game despite not giving any clear victory conditions ahead of time. (You’re welcome, Chris.)

Brad Andres

One of my earliest game designs that I can remember was a game that put players in charge of a power company. The catch was that they needed to send their workers off to collect electricity from roaming thunderclouds. I was hoping that the decision points would cause players to find ways to navigate the terrain and figure out the most efficient way to ferry electricity back to their home base. In practice, however, the mechanic that caused the clouds to move required more maintenance to keep it working than was fun for the players. And, because it was easier to simply wait for clouds to come to you, players did not engage in the main mechanic.

At the time, I was pretty disappointed that the design didn't work, since it seemed like I had such a solid idea in my head for how the game would play. Making this game taught me an important lesson, though: just because it seems like a design works on paper doesn't mean that it will be fun to play or you'll actually be able to engage players to interact with its mechanics.

Nate French

Wow, this topic takes me way back to 7th grade. I designed a monster fighting game that involved drawing a monster on one half of a sheet of paper, putting its health and gold at the top of the other side, and then beneath these two stats was a column with the numbers 2–12. There was a list of starting attacks, weapons, spells and powers a monster could choose from, and the player could assign these to each of the numbers as they saw fit. There were bonuses available to starting health, gold, and powers depending on how cool the monster’s drawing was.

Gameplay was pretty simple. On a player’s turn, they rolled two six-sided dice and resolved the attack or power or ability in that slot. Some damaged the other monster, some healed you, and other special effects like re-rolls or defenses against a specific opponent's attacks were also available. If you beat the other monster, you got all its gold, but the other monster could always resign at any time and then you only got ten gold for winning the fight. There were even upgrades to the abilities and weapons that could be purchased from the store if your monster saved up enough gold.

I initially made the game to pass the time in study hall: I’d make up two monsters and watch them fight each other. A friend eventually got in on it, and then a few more. Before we knew it, there were a LOT of people in the school playing the game, including kids I had never even talked to before. At one point, someone came up and asked if I played the monster game, and had a monster with attacks and powers that weren’t even part of the system… and yes, they were OP beyond belief! As with most things in Junior High, the monster game fad passed quickly, but it was fun while it lasted!

It bothered me a little at the time that people were making up their own items and powers for the game, but I can see now that they were doing it because they were really having fun with the game. This experience helped me realize an important fact that is a tenet of professional game design: after you release a game to an audience, it becomes as much their game as yours.

Hello, Star Wars: Destiny players!

While looking at the results of several recent large Star Wars: Destiny tournaments (Gen Con, the European Championship, and the U.S. Grand Championship), it's clear that two deck archetypes have risen to the top and were well-represented at each event. With the World Championship and the Prime Championship season right around the corner, this update is aimed at bringing those decks down a notch and promoting a more diverse metagame. This update also introduces an exciting new multiplayer format for team play: Alliances!

Ewoks

Spark of Hope features the long-awaited debut of Ewoks to the game. These furry little friends epitomize the strength in numbers mentality. Ewoks are great at dealing a consistent amount of damage, and teams with a low starting health, such as most two-character teams, face a tough challenge against Ewoks. If Ewoks become too prevalent, their presence will push many decks out of the metagame and stifle innovation. With the goal of boosting deck diversity, Ewok Warrior (Spark of Hope, 79) and Arena of Death (Way of the Force, 156) have been added to the Standard restricted list.

Hero Droids

Since the release of Spark of Hope, one of the most played deck archetypes is hero droids. A variety of decks are built around the efficacy and consistency of C-3PO (Spark of Hope, 77) and R2-D2 (Spark of Hope, 56), with the third character on the team often being either Chopper (Spark of Hope, 94), Satine Kryze (Convergence, 9), or Han Solo (Spark of Hope, 96). With cards that allow you to activate multiple characters, like Droids’ Day Out (Spark of Hope, 79), this pairing can generate resources and disrupt opponents too regularly for many decks to compete. C-3PO is now 9/11 points and Droids’ Day Out has been added to the restricted list in Standard and Trilogy.

Villain Supports

The other popular archetype from recent tournaments is villain supports. These decks take advantage of some of the most powerful supports in the game. Many of these decks are three-color to include some of the strongest cards in the game, while others focus on droids with Doctor Aphra (Legacies, 20). Wat Tambor (Convergence, 22) is a linchpin of this archetype because he can give you an extra support die each round, and getting an additional die, such as an Entourage (Convergence, 152) die, is extremely potent. Wat Tambor now has the following errata: “Power Action - Play a Red support from your hand (paying its cost). Then roll that support’s die into your pool.” This reduces the variety of supports he can play with his power action and should bring him more in line with other characters at his point values.

Alliances Format

An official new multiplayer format, Alliances, makes its debut in this update. Team up with your friend and challenge another team in a format that lets you play Star Wars: Destiny in a different way. Alliances has some unique rules that encourage cooperation, such as playing upgrades on your teammate’s characters, and each battlefield brought to the game will be used no matter which team wins the roll-off. Choose a deck, form an alliance, and test your mettle with this fun format!

I'm looking forward to how the metagame evolves with this update. Ideally, a variety of decks that have been on the cusp will compete with the best to establish an interesting and diverse tournament environment for Worlds and the Prime Championship season. The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, and your time to make a difference has finally come! Join us this fall for two 2019 World Championships on October 16–20! For five days, the best competitors of Star Wars™: Destiny and Star Wars™: X-Wing will gather from all over the world to contend for top-tier prizes and the chance at becoming a world champion! Hosted at the legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium at the Saint Paul RiverCentre in Minnesota, this year's events are sure to be bigger and better than ever!

As the pinnacle of all Organized Play events, not only do the World Championship events offer a venue where you can challenge the best players on a scale like no other, they also offer a variety of fun side events with a multitude of exclusive prizes. This is a once-a-year Star Wars extravaganza and an incredible way of celebrating your favorite game with other players who share your passion.

It's not too late to make a difference in the galaxy—tickets are still available! Star Wars: Destiny players may purchase their tickets here or players who already have invitations may claim their seats now. The deadline for reserving your seat is on September 30. Star Wars: X-Wing players who have yet to score an invitation to this year's World Championship may purchase a ticket for the Last Chance Qualifier, where the Top 64 players will qualify for Worlds. Even if you don't qualify, you are still free to play in all side events throughout the weekend! If you do have an invite, make sure to claim your seat by September 30.

On top of participation prizes and the wide array of placement prizes previewed below, players will be able to spend prize tickets to lay claim to the rewards available at the Star Wars: Destiny and Star Wars: X-Wing prize walls!

Now here is a look at the prizes you can win through participating in these exciting events!

Star Wars: Destiny

A fabled cast of characters that span the entire Star Wars saga clash in the fast-paced game of "what if?" duels, Star Wars: Destiny. Whether you team up with heroes like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rey or villains like General Grievous and Kylo Ren, the Star Wars galaxy opens up like never before as you play out nearly any confrontation that you can imagine. Filled with Jedi, Sith, bounty hunters, pilots, scoundrels and more, all of these beloved characters are found in the game while letting players experience the various strengths and abilities of these classic characters.

For the 2019 October World Championship, the diversity of these characters is further exemplified through the numerous rewards you can win!

Prize Wall

The Star Wars: Destiny prize wall will feature a wide assortment of prizes, only some of which are shown below! Among these previewed prizes, you'll find clone trooper and clone commander helmet shield tokens, promotional cards that feature newer additions to the Star Wars galaxy like Poe Dameron, Iden Versio, and Enfys Nest as well as classic characters like IG-88, Yoda, and Darth Vader. A game mat of three Ewoks set against a space nebula will be one of the many game mats available to World Championship attendees. In addition to these prizes, you'll find many more rewards that are unique to the prize wall which are attainable with prize tickets, including more promotional cards, tokens, and game mats!

Participation and Placement Prizes

Simply for participating, Star Wars: Destiny players will receive a deckbox of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker's final confrontation aboard the Death Star II, as well as a pair of prize tickets to kickstart their prize wall venture! Players will also earn two additional prize tickets per win and one prize ticket per loss during the main events. There will be many more opportunities to earn prize tickets throughout the weekend, as side events will be following a similar structure for awarding prize tickets.

Last but not least, the Top 64 overall players will win a striking game mat of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Maul facing off with crossed lightsabers, while the Top 32 overall players will also receive a set of ten gold and black acrylic resource tokens!

Champion

The winner of the Star Wars: Destiny World Championship will be awarded with a one-of-a-kind game mat featuring a stunning illustration of Amilyn Holdo's heroic sacrifice to save the Resistance transports during their desperate escape to the world of Crait. Due to her selfless act, Vice Admiral Holdo was able to cripple the First Order fleet as her jump into hyperspace decimated their forces and cleanly cut Supreme Leader Snoke's flagship, the Supremacy, in two. Along with the other rewards and prize tickets gained along the way, the renowned champion will also receive a unique trophy (not pictured) denoting their impressive achievement!

Star Wars: X-Wing

Star Wars: X-Wing places you directly in the cockpit of a starfighter, as you try to outwit and outmaneuver enemy squadrons amongst the stars! At the 2019 October World Championship, you'll find a host of prizes suited for an ace pilot. No matter what faction you fly, or what ships are in your squadron, these rewards are designed to be a direct reflection of your skills as a squadron commander.

Maintain your target lock on these prizes as rival pilots will be gunning for the same rewards! Your opponent will not hesitate to strike. Keep your aim true and follow through!

Participation

Taking part in the Star Wars: X-Wing World Championship yields several exclusive prizes, including a spread of promotional cards including Plo Koon, Delta 7B and Battle Meditation! Depending on your chosen faction, you will also be given three extended art cards, such as Trade Federation Drone, Delta Squadron Pilot, and Contracted Scout. Day 2 players will be rewarded with a copy of each of these extended art cards, no matter which faction you fight for!

And perhaps most impressively, all X-Wing attendees will also receive an exclusive alternate painted Plo Koon ship, complete with a maneuver dial, ship marker, and token set!

Finally, simply for participating, each player will also be given a pair of prize tickets. Additional prize tickets may be earned via side events or achieving top placements in the main event. These prize tickets can be turned into a number of rewards that are unique to the prize wall like extended art cards, acrylic tokens, alternate ship punch, and art prints! Through the use of these prize tickets, you'll be flying in style in no time.

Top 64 and 32

Players who make their way into the Top 64 (per flight) will be awarded with silver-and-green focus and evade tokens. The Top 32 players (per flight) will receive a red-and-black range ruler with the World Championship symbol, denoting your accomplishment at this high-level event! During the final elimination rounds on Saturday, the Top 32 players will be given a unique Plo Koon damage deck.

Top 16

Only the most skilled squadron commanders will break into the Top 16 during the elimination rounds and their efforts will be greatly rewarded for doing so! These players will receive a full set of maneuver templates to complement the range ruler set they previously won in the Top 32 cut, and they will also be given a copy of each promotional card below, like Kylo Ren, DFS-311, and Kare Kun. Separately, the Top 16 players per faction will also receive a copy of their faction's card as shown below.

Top 8

In the Top 8, your efforts will be further rewarded with a full set of maneuver dials, representing all seven factions of Star Wars: X-Wing. But the Top 8 players won't be the only ones walking away with these maneuver dials, as the Top 8 players by faction per day will be given three of their faction's dial to reward their efforts in the war.

Top Faction, Finalist, and Champion

The top player per faction and per day will be awarded with a striking black and gold magnetic template tray emblazoned with the symbol of their faction. As previously mentioned above, faction loyalty will be further rewarded with various other prizes like sets of extended art cards and maneuver dials. Finally, unique trophies (not pictured) will be awarded to the finalist and of course, the sole ace pilot who seizes victory and claims the coveted title of World Champion!

Welcome, Star Wars™: Destiny players! Today, we're excited to share more details on the upcoming Prime Championships! In this article, we will be listing dates and locations for these exciting events.

As the tier above Store Championships, Prime Championships (formerly known as Regional Championships) are open events that draw in players from all over to compete, forming a central part of the Organized Play path to the World Championship. 14 Years

A Retrospective Journal from Corey Konieczka

I started working at FFG on July 1, 2005. Before then, I had designed games as a fun hobby, so being able to do it as a career was (and still is) an unbelievable privilege. At the time, FFG had twenty or so people, and we had no idea that the company (and the hobby games industry) was about to grow in leaps and bounds.

It doesn't seem that long ago until I do math and realize that I’ve been doing this for fourteen years. While I still have much to learn, I have experienced much through my years at FFG, and I thought it might be fun to examine my career through the lens of the games I've worked on.

World of Warcraft: The Board Game – 2005

I started my career at FFG designing bosses and equipment for World of Warcraft: The Board Game. I remember spending an afternoon solo-testing boss fights that went roughly like this: roll a handful of D8s on my desk with a clatter. Record data. Scoop and repeat.

Warrior Knights – 2006

We had the rights to republish Derek Carver's Warrior Knights, and my boss wanted more than just a new coat of paint. Bruno Faiduitti and Pierre Cléquin took a stab at a redesign, and I was asked to take it even further.

When testing the game, I vividly remembered one piece of advice from Christian T. Petersen: "Your game is too short." This really caught me off guard. The game was already three hours long, and I'd been doing everything I could to shorten it. I didn't heed this advice, and when the game was released, the fan feedback was: "The game ends just when it's getting exciting." Luckily, I got to fix this in an expansion, but this greatly shaped how I evaluate feedback from others.

This was also the first time I worked with Andrew Navaro on a project. The gorgeous graphic design and cardbacks were made by the man who would one day become the head of FFG studio!

Twilight Imperium: Shattered Empire – 2006

I'm not going to talk about expansions in this article, but I have to make an exception for this one. The third edition of Twilight Imperium was the game that introduced me to Fantasy Flight Games.

Before working at FFG, my friend Gary and I created a small homebrew expansion for the game. Months later, when I applied to work at FFG, I included a copy of it with my resume. Luckily, they liked my additions, and I was hired. A year later I was given the opportunity to work on a Twilight Imperium expansion, and some of my fan content ended up in it!

While working on Shattered Empire, I vividly remember writing hilarious backstories for the new planets. I soon found out that Twilight Imperium is a serious universe, and I had to start over. In hindsight, this was pretty obvious.

Tide of Iron – 2007

My name probably shouldn't be on the box of this game. I designed a few scenarios and helped out, but I didn't design any of the core mechanics. Fun game though!

StarCraft: The Board Game – 2007

I was introduced to the StarCraft videogame at a LAN party in high school. I was hooked immediately, and I sank way too much time into that game and its awesome map editor.

Needless to say, I was over the moon when I was given the opportunity to design the board game. Christian proposed zooming out the scale of the game to show multiple planets, as well as the idea of using A Game of Thrones: The Board Game-style order tokens (but stacking them). With those mandates I dove into my first "from scratch" game design.

Looking back on it, I still like most of the individual mechanics, but holy cow, is it complicated. A 48-page rulebook? Was I crazy?

World of Warcraft: The Adventure Game – 2007

The goal was to create a simpler World of Warcraft game that could be enjoyed by both casual gamers and hobby gamers. In the end, I learned that trying to appeal to everyone meant that it appealed to no one. Except one guy. And he really liked it.

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game – 2008

I spent the next six months working on game expansions, and then came the opportunity of a lifetime: we had secured the rights to do a Battlestar Galactica board game.

After my first playtest of the game, I knew that we had something special. Instead of needing to strong arm people into playtesting my game, I had people approaching me to ask when my next playtest was. To top things off, some of these people had never even seen the show!

I think what made the game successful was not in how it recreated the events of the show, but how it made people feel. The game exudes an intoxicating mix of deception and mistrust, which was rare among board games. When you secretly look at your loyalty card and see that you're a Cylon, your heart rate immediately picks up. As much as you want to smile, groan, or shout, you have to pretend that your card is blank. It's exhilarating.

Middle-earth Quest – 2009

I was tasked with creating an asymmetric game that had one player taking on the role of Sauron and the other players embodying heroes of Middle-earth. It was a unique design challenge in that I was really designing two different games: Sauron was playing a strategy game, while the heroes were playing an adventure game. I love a challenge.

My most vivid memory for this game was spending a week at Christian's house rewriting the rulebook in his home office. I learned more about rulebooks in that week that I had in my first four years at FFG.

Space Hulk: Death Angel – 2010

The moment that sticks with me about this game was when the late Harald Bilz (in charge of our partner Heidelberg at the time), played my game and said: "It is good, but not great." He then listed the issues with the main card mechanic and how it did a poor job of capturing the theme. He was right. The original mechanic was shelved and would later find its way into the Gears of War boardgame.

I really appreciated the frank feedback, and I think it was instrumental in making this game a great success.

Runewars – 2010

Back in 1998, FFG made a fantasy take on Twilight Imperium known as Battlemist. I was tasked with making a spiritual successor that lived in our Terrinoth universe (used both in Runebound and Descent: Journeys in the Dark).

While the premise of the game was the same, the mechanics were designed from scratch. This was definitely one of my heavier designs and included everything from huge strategic battles to heroes sent on personal quests. In hindsight, it was probably trying to do too much, but perhaps that was part of the charm?

Mansions of Madness First Edition – 2011

My most vivid memory of this game was a discussion with Tim Uren that went something like this: "If we tell players to not, under any circumstance, go into the freezer, do you think they'll listen?" "Hard to say. Let's make players lose the game if they ignore the warning."

The answer is that when you tell players not to do something, it jumps to the top of their wish list. Many people died because of my curiosity, and I learned a lesson.

Rune Age – 2011

This one has a special place in my heart. It was my attempt to add direct player interaction to a deckbuilding game. While it wasn't a huge hit, it still has some dedicated fans and I'm proud of the game.

Gears of War – 2011

I had dipped my toe in the "co-op" design pool with Death Angel, but this was my first deep dive into a fully cooperative board game. I'm most proud of the AI system I designed to control the Locust enemies, and this design later became an inspiration for AI in apps like Road to Legend for Descent: Journeys in the Dark.

My favorite memory was visiting the Epic Games studio to play my prototype with the Gears of War dev team. It was great to show them my game and meet everyone, including the great Lee Perry, who would later help design a little game called Fortnite.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition – 2012

The planned amount of content in this game was staggering, with more hours of scripted playtime than I'd ever been a part of. Luckily, we had a big team (including myself, Adam Sadler, and Daniel Lovat Clark). The plan was to draw on Kevin Wilson's first edition, but to include a campaign from the start. I learned how to split up design tasks among big teams and gained a new appreciation for this style of game.

Eldritch Horror – 2013

I was tasked with building a world-spanning Lovecraftian adventure that borrowed heavily from Richard Launius and Kevin Wilson's amazing Arkham Horror Second Edition.

Nikki Valens came in halfway through the design process and asked some hard questions about this game. She was a key proponent in streamlining the mechanics to what it is today. Before that point, there were probably twice as many token types (including money tokens).

Star Wars™: Imperial Assault – 2014

A Star Wars version of Descent: Journeys in the Dark? Sign me up!

The biggest challenge with this game is that we wanted to have two distinct games in the same box: a traditional dungeon-crawling campaign and a two-player head-to-head skirmish mode. I spent most of my time working on the skirmish game, and I got to geek out and design abilities for this little-known character called Darth Vader.

Star Wars™: Rebellion – 2016

Christian was a fan of the old Rebellion video game, and he thought it would be the perfect inspiration for a board game. Although I had only played that game once growing up, I loved the idea of the game.

I focused my design on what I enjoy most about two-player games: bluffing and mindgames. It's a game about outthinking your opponent and living out Star Wars fantasies in a unique way. If you've ever wanted to blow up a planet, this game is for you.

Star Wars™: Destiny – 2016

In my youth, the Decipher Star Wars CCG was one of my favorite games, so to have an opportunity to work on a new Star Wars collectible card game was a dream come true.

Lukas Litzsinger was the lead designer on this, and it was a pleasure to work with him on this one. From the start, we knew that we wanted to use unique printed dice, and that presented a huge challenge. CCGs with dice have a notorious history, so our first goal was to find a way to integrate them in a fun and novel way. I am super proud of the end result, and I think we created a unique CCG that is engaging, fun, and accessible.

Twilight Imperium Fourth Edition – 2017

This project was weird in that I played the role of guide and overseer, while the actual development work was done by the talented Dane Beltrami. I helped identify the best parts of third edition that we wanted to keep, and I also provided ideas to try and improve an already great game system. My favorite contribution was the new trade system and how it provided even more opportunities to form and break alliances.

Discover: Lands Unknown – 2018

I first pitched this game idea in 2014 as my homage to exploration and survival video games. It later was combined with Christian and Eric Lang's brilliant idea of creating a board game in which no two copies in the world are the same (the full history of which is cataloged here).

I feel like this game was a little lighter than many people expected, but I'm really proud of how it turned out, and I think it deserves a second look (especially if you haven't seen the fully cooperative rules).

Star Wars™: Outer Rim – 2019

This game is inspired by space exploration videogames from the mid ‘90s, like Wing Commander: Privateer.

My goal was to create a game that wasn't about delivering colored cubes from one space to another, and instead lean into the flavor of the universe. My fondest game memories always revolve around the people and the stories, and I think we've provided all the tools scoundrels need to tell emergent stories in the Star Wars universe.

Looking back on fourteen years makes me realize how malleable memory can be. Did we have the concept meeting for Battlestar Galactica on a plane ride to visit Blizzard? I think so, but I'm not sure. Human memory doesn't work like a computer, it flows and rewrites itself to make sense of the world. Memory is built from impressions, feelings, and snippets of conversation—our mind fills in the gaps, but I'm never quite sure which bridges are fabricated.

I do know one thing for certain though: this long list of games are not my accomplishments; they are the accomplishments of hundreds of people. They only exist because of other designers, producers, artists, graphic designers, editors, licensors, playtesters, and more.

I was born in the right place and in the right century, and I have had the pleasure of working with wonderful people to craft fascinating games. The future beckons, and my journey continues.

Preview the 2019 Star Wars: Destiny Prime Championships Prizes

With the release of the Spark of Hope expansion set, as well as the recently updated Rules Reference and Holocrons, it's now time to train yourself in preparation for the upcoming Star Wars™: Destiny Prime Championships.

Previously known as Regional Championships, these tournaments are competitive events that are certain to challenge your skills as a player. As the tier above Store Championships, Prime Championships draw in players from all over to compete, forming a central part of the Organized Play path that leads to the World Championships.

Now it's time to show off the exclusive prizes of the Star Wars: Destiny Prime Championships, which prominently features two pivotal characters of the epic Skywalker saga: Rey and Kylo Ren. Among these prizes you'll find tokens, game mats, a variety of promotional cards, and even an invitation to the upcoming 2019 October World Championships! Choose your heroes or villains wisely and prepare for a true clash of fates.

Top 64 and Top 32

Players in the Top 64 of a Star Wars: Destiny Prime Championship will receive a pair of extended art cards featuring Rey and Kylo Ren. Top 32 players will also receive an extended art version of the plot card Temporary Truce, which brings these two diametrically opposed characters together.

Top 16

Players who place in the Top 16 cut of a Prime Championship will earn a spread of promotional cards. First up, you'll find the Spark of Hope versions of Kylo Ren and Rey. These are striking plastic cards that feature extended art templating of these key characters. Continuing with the Blue theme, players in the Top 16 will also receive extended art versions of Force Connection and Untamed Power.

Top 8 and Top 4

Players who cut their way through their opponents and place within the Top 8 of a Prime Championship will earn a stunning playmat featuring Kylo Ren and Rey teaming up and preparing to defend themselves in Snoke's throne room. Then, those players who place within the Top 4 of the event will also receive a set of nine acrylic shield tokens of Kylo Ren's iconic black and silver helmet.

Champion

The winner of the Prime Championship will walk away with a playmat depicting Rey and Kylo Ren facing off against the deadly Praetorian guards, in addition to every prize shown above. The champion will also obtain a personal invitation to the upcoming Star Wars: Destiny World Championship!

The galaxy can change in a single instant. The destruction of Alderaan announced to the galaxy that the dreaded Death Star was fully operational and that the Empire was in complete control. In the same way, the Rebels' swift destruction of this terrible weapon brought a spark of hope to the disenfranchised and signaled a changing tide. These covert missions are undertaken by some of the most iconic characters in the galaxy and can change the balance of the Force.

Fantasy Flight games is proud to announce Covert Missions, a 160-card booster set for Star Wars™: Destiny!

Covert Missions expands on the themes of the Convergence Block by continuing to place an emphasis on sub-types, downgrades, and plots! In this set, look for a new keyword, iconic characters, and two new plots that provide an alternate victory condition.

Destruction Vs. Construction

No weapon is more feared across the galaxy than the dreaded Death Star. Completion of the project nearly solidified the Empire’s control on the galaxy, only to be thwarted by a covert mission to exploit a weakness in the system and destroy the weapon for good. Now, the Death Star can be the focal point of victory and defeat in Star Wars: Destiny! Villains are tasked with the covert mission to Construct the Death Star (Covert Missions, 30), a monumental task that requires a massive amount of resources. However, if they can consistently remove their own dice showing resources, they can wipe the Rebel Alliance from the face of the galaxy once and for all.

Heroes, on the other hand, are tasked with a mission to Destroy the Death Star (Covert Missions, 81). It will take a crack team of Pilots and Vehicles to get the job done. However, if your pilots can chip away at the massive behemoth, and if you can make a successful Trench Run (Covert Missions, 80) and Trust Your Feelings (Covert Missions, 63) along the way, the Rebel Alliance may just pull off a miracle.

Both of these plots will take time to complete, a commodity that’s a rarity in Star Wars: Destiny. Luckily, if you can get your hands on the Death Star Plans (Covert Missions, 126), you can expediate the process. However, these plans are valuable, and should your opponent steal them, they can speed up their own plans, putting the pressure on you to retrieve the plans as quickly as possible.

Whether it’s a skilled leader or hot-shot pilot, both of these plots will require the best of the best to see them through to completion. Director Krennic (Covert Missions, 21) was the mastermind behind the Death Star, and gives your team some additional space by decreasing the point value of the construction of the space station. Furthermore, he can always turn one of his dice to a resource side after he is activated, setting you on the path to victory.

On the other hand, Luke Skywalker (Covert Missions, 56) not only frees up space on your crew looking to Destroy the Death Star, but also introduces a brand new mechanic to the game in the form of piloting. If a character has piloting, any time they are activated you may also activate one of your vehicles, with the character considered to be piloting that vehicle. This not only provides action efficiency, but can be a trigger for other effects, such as Luke’s ability to increase the value of his piloted vehicle’s die by one. If Luke Skywalker’s piloted vehicle is his iconic X-Wing (Covert Missions, 66), you can even utilize its Power Action to turn its die to any side! Between Luke Skywalker and his X-Wing, over half your dice are showing damage, making them the perfect pair to take one fateful shot against the dreaded Death Star.

Just a Job

Of course, others in the Star Wars galaxy aren’t fighting on a galactic scale. Some are just doing a job, getting by on their wits and skill. Boba Fett (Covert Missions, 38) is a ruthless bounty hunter, and the more bounties your opponent has on their characters, the more dangerous he becomes. After an opponent’s character is defeated, Boba Fett may roll in a number of character and upgrade dice equal to the bounties that were on that character. Bringing in a bountied character just gives Boba Fett motivation to get back to the hunt, and continue tracking your opponent’s characters.

But a Bounty Hunter can only get so far without a ship, and Boba Fett happens to pilot one of the most iconic in the galaxy. The Slave I (Covert Missions, 50) is a ship as ruthless as its pilot. While it is on the field, both Boba Fett and Jango Fett have piloting, and after it becomes piloted by a bounty hunter, Slave I may deal one damage to a character. With the new piloting ability, Slave I is a much more efficient vehicle than it’s ever been before, and can assist Boba, Jango, or any bounty hunter on their quest to track down their prey.

New versions of the Star Wars™: Destiny Holocrons and Rules Reference documents are now available to download! These new revisions are immediately going into effect. Greetings, Star Wars: Destiny players!

Spark of Hope is upon us and features exciting new cards and mechanics for players to explore and battle with. This update includes rules and card clarifications for some cards from Spark of Hope, along with an additional tool for the Holocrons in our ongoing goal to create fun and healthy gameplay for all formats.

Since the Infinite format does not have rotation, it obviously features an ever-expanding card pool where every card in the game is legal. With so many powerful cards to use, there are bound to be combinations of cards that are unhealthy for the metagame and need to be addressed. Previously, we only had two tools at hand to deal with problematic interactions: Balance of the Force and errata. So far, we’ve used Balance of the Force only for characters, and that leaves us with one tool for all the other cards. That tool, errata, is not player friendly and should be used as a last resort. But without any other tools, that last resort is often our only option. This is one reason why we’re introducing a new tool for each of the Holocrons: a restricted list.

A restricted list is a list of cards in which, when building a deck, a player may select one card from the restricted list to use for their deck, and that player cannot use any other cards from the restricted list for that same deck. A player may run as many copies of their chosen restricted card as the rules (or card text) allow.

This new tool allows us to separate cards that have a negative play experience when combined with each other, without having to use harsh measures, such as errata. This also allows us to keep pushing the envelope by creating exciting new cards, even if there is a previous card that interacts very negatively with a new card.

For example, Order 66 (Spark of Hope, 15) and Execute Order 66 (Spark of Hope, 27) are new cards that you can build around to create interesting gameplay. However, when combined with a couple copies of Rebel Traitor (Legacies, 22), it can quickly turn to poor gameplay by removing all of an opponent’s character dice every round. By placing both Order 66 and Rebel Traitor on the restricted list, that unfavorable interaction is completely eliminated without directly affecting either card. Players are still free to use either card as printed, so long as they don’t use them together.

In the Clutches of Chaos is the fifth Mythos Pack in The Circle Undone cycle for Arkham Horror: The Card Game.

After your fateful investigation in Union and Disillusion, the state of the city continues to decay. Breaches in reality begin to rip through the fabric of the Earth, and a faint melody of discordant pipes can be heard throughout the streets of Arkham. Frightened citizens have sealed themselves in their homes, yet you continue to patrol the streets, desperate for some solution to end the chaos.

In In the Clutches of Chaos, doom does not accrue at the usual rate. Instead, breaches are made at various locations, marked by resource tokens. When enough breaches have been made at a single location, an incursion occurs. An incursion adds doom to its location and causes the breaches to spread, opening rifts in reality at connecting locations. Your goal is to prevent incursions by removing the breaches that cause them, but this can only be done by activating the action abilities on each location. If you do not maintain control over the breaches, you may soon find yourself overwhelmed with Arkham falling into madness. You cannot allow that to happen!

Spark of Hope continues the themes introduced in Convergence, including an emphasis on subtypes that put Jedi and apprentices on the center stage of conflict for Blue heroes.

Master and Apprentice

In the Old Republic, shortly before the rise of the Empire, Jedi master Yoda (Spark of Hope, 58) helped train the newest generation of Jedi, serving as a protector and mentor for the order. This new version of Yoda can hold up to six shields on his own, and can use these shields to block damage to apprentice characters. As a protective mentor, Yoda can support characters such as Ahsoka Tano (Convergence, 54) and his Defensive Teaching (Legacies, 106) can further maximize his ability to produce shields.

But even the wise Yoda can learn from others. Qui Gon Jinn’s spirit (Spark of Hope, 70) can guide those who seek the unorthodox wisdom of the Jedi Master. For Yoda, this means turning his bevy of shields into a way to defeat your foes, utilizing the power of defense to overwhelm his foes. Though Qui-Gon may have been cut down by Darth Maul, no one is ever really gone and there is still plenty to learn from those who came before.

Yoda can also provide protection to Younglings, (Spark of Hope, 59) new diceless characters that can only be included on your team if you also have a Jedi like Yoda. Younglings are the least-expensive characters in the game, and receive a discount when you place a Blue upgrade on them with their Power Action. Although Younglings start without any threatening abilities, careful guidance from Jedi can help them hone their abilities and fight for the fate of the galaxy.

For a thousand generations, younglings constructed their lightsabers with the help of Professor Huyang (Spark of Hope, 69). Now, the Professor lends his aid to Blue heroes in Star Wars: Destiny, activating after you play an upgrade on an apprentice, and letting you roll in the upgrade’s die if it is a weapon. With a boost to action efficiency, Professor Huyang is the guide apprentices need to take their abilities to the next level.

But it takes intense training to master the power of the Force, it’s not just Moving Rocks (Spark of Hope, 66). It takes a wise master to instill important lessons (Spark of Hope, 71) in their apprentices, and a Refusal (Spark of Hope, 10) to train them can lead to Untamed Power (Spark of Hope, 124).

A Balanced Approach

While mentors often pass down wisdom and knowledge, combat is an essential part of ending conflict in a galaxy constantly at war. Niman Mastery (Spark of Hope, 122) is a new form that gives you control over the dice on the battlefield. But it takes patience and training to truly master this style of combat. Niman Training (Spark of Hope, 123) is the first step an apprentice can take on their way to mastery, allowing you to turn an upgrade die to any side before replacing itself with Niman Mastery from your hand or discard pile.

Attaining a mastery of the Niman form also upgrades your Pushing Slash (Spark of Hope, 118), combining action efficiency with dice manipulation. You can also lure your opponent in with Draw Closer (Spark of Hope, 116), letting you resolve a die without removing it from your pool, and increasing its value if the character is upgraded with Niman Mastery.

The Niman style of lightsaber combat is a balanced form, allowing you to keep your opponent at bay with a measured approach of dice manipulation. Is this the path your team will take to victory?

Spark of Hope continues the themes found in Convergence, while introducing new ways to defeat your opponents in Destiny’s epic duels. Look for diceless characters to fill out your team, a new form of Lightsaber mastery, and an emphasis on subtypes like Jedi, Sith, leaders, and troopers.

Lighting the Spark

While regimes like the Empire and the First Order rally their troops around fear, rebels rally around their leaders and the purpose they provide to a galaxy in turmoil. During the darkest hour of the Resistance, Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Spark of Hope, 75) provided a spark of hope to rebels on the run. In Star Wars: Destiny, Holdo can still provide that spark when all seems lost, allowing you to ready a vehicle after she is defeated, or playing one at a discounted cost with her special symbol. This can allow you to utilize new vehicles like the B-Wing (Spark of Hope, 86) to ignite the spark of hope and find victory with overwhelming firepower.

Holdo becomes even more valuable if she is equipped with the Admiral (Spark of Hope, 136) title, an expensive upgrade that can see you activating your characters and vehicles multiple times a turn provided you roll its special symbol. While it is an expensive investment, You Are In Command Now (Spark of Hope, 132) provides a discount to these resource-heavy titles that can drastically shift the course of a game.

Holdo is a leader that stands out from the rest, willing to do whatever it takes to protect a small band of rebels from complete destruction. She even went so far as to perform a Lightspeed Assault (Spark of Hope, 81) to save the last remnants of the Resistance. This event requires great sacrifice, but a Firm Resolve (Spark of Hope, 87) can ensure your band of heroes has a chance against overwhelming forces. With some clever setup, you may even be able to Take Control (Spark of Hope, 85) of an opponent’s vehicle and use that for your lightspeed assault, softening the blow to your own forces while dealing heavy damage to your opponent.

But what's a leader without loyal troopers to follow them into battle? If it wasn’t for the skill and sacrifice of those on the front lines of the battlefield, there would be no victory. The Hoth Trooper (Spark of Hope, 78) is one of the new diceless characters in Spark of Hope, but can still deal damage to your opponent every time they are activated. At five points, Hoth Troopers can fill out your team, and their resolve and a strong leader can push your team to victory.

An Endless March of Terror

The villains of the Star Wars galaxy don’t rely on hopes and dreams of the future, instead they find their power in skill and fear. Gideon Hask (Spark of Hope, 21) is a commando in the fearsome Inferno Squad, completing missions with an efficiency seen nowhere else in the galaxy. If Gideon is leading your troopers, he can get the most out of them by rerolling their dice with his Power Action, even if they've already been activated for the turn. Since Gideon is a trooper, this ability can target himself, and allows him to take advantage of several trooper-specific cards in Spark of Hope.

Gideon can utilize the AT-RT (Spark of Hope, 134), a vehicle specifically made for troopers on the front line of the battlefield, with a special die filled with modifiers that can freely modify trooper dice. The flexibility offered by this vehicle is second-to-none, simply making any die roll better, regardless of the symbol.

Mudtroopers (Spark of Hope, 22) can also utilize the AT-RT to great effect. The Mudtroopers allow you to reroll a die showing a blank after you activate the Mudtroopers or a leader character. With two blank sides themselves, the Mudtroopers are the perfect target for their own ability, providing a high level of consistency to your team for just eight points.

Lighting a New Path

The spark of hope is not an easy thing to ignite. It takes sacrifice, and those willing to do whatever it takes to keep hope alive against those who would extinguish it throughout the galaxy. A new version of the Star Wars™: Destiny Rules Reference is now online! While this update doesn't feature dramatic changes, there are a few important card errata and a couple notable characters removed from the Balance of the Force that are worth your attention, especially before you head to your next event. These changes will formally go into effect on June 10th. Today, Star Wars: Destiny developer Jeremy Zwirn goes into detail on why these adjustments were made and how they may affect your next game.

Hello Star Wars: Destiny players!

The release of the base set, Convergence, ushered in an exciting time for the game with the first ever Standard rotation. The metagame has since shifted with several new decks and strategies emerging. Some of these cards have been deemed necessary to be addressed to help maintain fun and healthy gameplay. Some of the following cards have been given errata and/or been removed from the Balance of the Force.

Snoke

Snoke (Way of the Force, 4) has played a major role in the metagame ever since last autumn. His power action is unquestionably one of the strongest in the game and has most often been used to generate additional resources, which can then be used to play potent cards like Vader's Fist (Across the Galaxy, 13) on the first turn. Snoke was added to the Balance of the Force late last year to diminish some of his most powerful pairings and that was effective. With the release of Convergence and rotation, Snoke has gotten new partners while other decks rotated out, which has resulted in him becoming a dominant fixture again. The heart of the problem is his power action and that has now received errata to only work on your dice showing damage. Players can no longer use his power action to produce more resources, which means his most common pairings will no longer be viable. In addition to this errata, Snoke has been removed from the Balance of the Force Standard and Infinite Holocrons to restore some of his originally intended pairings, such as with Kylo Ren (Two-Player Starter, 1).

Aayla Secura

Aayla Secura (Legacies, 29) has been taken off the Balance of the Force for both the Standard and Infinite Holocrons. The metagame has changed since Aalya Secura was added to the Balance of the Force list nearly a year ago. After a second-place finish at the World Championship last year and many other high placements, Blue hero is no longer one of the best colors. Now, many more cost-effective characters have been introduced to the game, giving players more choices for teambuilding instead of commonly defaulting to a character like Aayla. Also, villains have been outperforming heroes lately and removing Aayla Secura from the Balance of the Force should give heroes a needed boost.

Force Storm

Creating exciting, boundary-pushing cards is always a goal of designing Star Wars: Destiny. The thrill of seeing and playing these cards can be extremely fun and memorable. Sometimes we push a card too far, and Force Storm (Convergence, 14) is one such example. With enough dice showing focus, you could play Force Storm, rapidly charge it by repeatedly resolving its special, and deal a large amount of damage in a single round, sometimes a game-winning amount. The consistency of this happening on the second or third turn was too high to ignore. Now, you must exhaust Force Storm to place a resource on it, which keeps the card at a strong power level and makes it difficult to abuse.

LAAT Gunship

Similar to Force Storm, this is another exciting card could lead to an immediate win. In combination with elite Kes Dameron (Convergence, 73) and his two-focus side, you could resolve one of his character dice and roll it back into your pool with the LAAT Gunship (Convergence, 84) an unlimited number of times. An infinite loop that involves a character and only one other card is too consistent and game-breaking to have in the game. Therefore, the Gunship has gotten errata that forces you to immediately resolve its die or remove it in order to prevent you from repeatedly turning it to its special. This maintains the intent of the card to be exciting and strong without the negative play experience of an endless loop.

Watto

Support characters, or characters that generally can’t win the game by themselves, have come a long way since the game’s release. Most of these types of characters from the Awakenings cycle weren’t strong enough to see Tier 1 competitive play and it was a goal of ours to push some support characters until they did. In regards to Watto (Convergence, 38), mission accomplished. Watto has great dice, a solid power action, and a powerful ability that protects his dice from removal. This combination at relatively low points has made him one of the best characters in the game. One of the most frustrating pieces of playing against Watto is how hard it is to remove his dice. Thematically, this ability reflects how the stubborn Toydarian cannot be mind tricked. In order to maintain this aspect while making him more interactive, this ability has been given errata to protect his dice from only Blue events. This should open up the interplay of removing his dice considerably without sacrificing theme.
