The legions of Waiqar the Undying grow with their carrion worms, the larger the forces of undead marching, the more monstrous these vile beasts become. These massive, grotesque creatures swiftly devour everything in their path, expelling a putrid fluid on their prey that melts both armor and flesh before attacking. And they perform this hideous act under the cold direction of the undead’s fiercest warriors, the Carrion Lancers.

Insatiable Hunger

The Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion comes with two unpainted miniatures that players can design to their taste, same as the undead warriors do when raising these monstrously malformed beasts. Waiqar’s cruelest carrion worm masters force feed the hideous grubs nearly any substance at hand, watching the beasts adopt the properties of what they consume, whether it be the flesh of their enemies or prized gems.

The toxic acid spewed by the carrion worms can affect their enemies at great distances. Once per turn, the Carrion Lancer may choose one unengaged enemy unit up to five range away and in line of sight to receive one blight token. This ability prepares the Carrion Lancers for martial engagement later in the battle, bringing even high defense creatures such as the Rune Golems to their knees. The worm’s enemies are ready to be devoured before they even face the savage beast.

Foul Mount

With a cost of fifteen points per unit, it is a simple task for a player commanding the Undying to build a swarm of Carrion Lancers to consume their enemies—a feat which will be quickly rewarded. These beasts are much quicker than their immense size would tell, and bring their ferocity to bear quite quickly. The high-impact siege unit’s initiative falls in the middle of a round, between three and seven, rather than later, but can manage an initiative four charge. The lancers can also traverse great distances and move a distance up to four, reaching those that might feel they are safe from the beasts' wrath. This speed strikes fear into the hearts of Waiqar’s enemies and makes the formidable mounts terrible to behold on the battlefield.

When the Carrion Lancers attack, they roll one red die and two blue. This gives them a high probability of rolling at least one surge icon. A lancer engaged in combat may spend this to add a mortal strike against a defender if they bear a blight token, which may have been inflicted by the carrion worm earlier in the battle.

Additionally, the carrion worms are unquestionably loyal to their undead overlords, as indicated by their Steadfast [Doubt] modifier. This means that while the unit is suffering a morale test, they may treat Doubt cards as having one additional morale icon. The Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion also comes with eight available upgrade cards, two of which are specific to the Carrion Lancers, to make the intimidating fiends even more powerful.

Preview Two Unit Expansions for Runewars Miniatures Game

From the border of the Daqan Lords’ baronies, you can look out upon the ceaseless motion of the Mistlands. The movement of the mists can seem hypnotic—unpredictable, ephemeral, and eternal. But the guardsmen of the border would do well to stay vigilant. The vanguard of Waiqar’s undead legions has already crossed into Terrinoth, and reinforcements are on their way.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at two of the Unit Expansions arriving soon to Runewars Miniatures Game: the Reanimates Unit Expansion and the Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion!

The Ranks of the Dead

Striding inexorably out of the vile mists that shroud the Thirteenth Barony, Reanimates form the bulk of the dreaded host of Waiqar the Undying. Their wargear is ancient and caked with rust, but they wield it with arms that never tire. These skeletal soldiers fight relentlessly against any who oppose their master’s will, delivering a merciless and inevitable doom. Even when cut down and broken, Reanimates will pull themselves to their feet again and again, driven by Waiqar’s unquenchable ambition.

Centuries beyond the confrontation between Waiqar and Timmorran on the Night of Betrayal, the original fallen warriors that compose the Deathborn Legion now have their own hosts to command. Ardus Ix’Erebus leads the Host of Crows, while Calleum Pahaan marches ahead of the Breathless Legion. Some of the vampires of Bilehall have mastered the necromantic arts to raise their own personal armies, including the Sanguine Coterie. Even the ancient revenant, Lord Farrenghast, has a contingent of undead infantry under his command.

You’ve had the chance to battle with a block of Reanimates in your army since the release of the Runewars Miniatures Game Core Set, but the Reanimates Unit Expansion is the perfect opportunity to increase your forces. With the potential to field twelve-tray units of Reanimates in your army, the eight additional Reanimates figures in this expansion are a key part of growing your army base.

It’s also immediately apparent after any game of Runewars Miniatures Game that your Reanimates form the backbone of Waiqar’s infantry. Though their movement options on the dial are relatively limited, you can equip any unit of Reanimates with Trumpets, which dramatically increases their speed and maneuverability for just two points.

Reanimates are also well known for returning from beyond the grave. Even when struck down, these undead warriors will arise again and again, regenerating according to the flow of natural magic on the battlefield. Larger units of Reanimates can also take advantage of the Lingering Dead upgrade. Under normal circumstances, if your Reanimates take heavy losses, you’ll be forced to remove trays of figures, losing any chance for your Reanimates to return to those trays with their Regenerate ability. Lingering Dead, however, means that you won’t remove those trays until the end of the End Phase, giving you a chance to raise more dead and crush your foes beneath the weight of countless bodies.

Because the empty tray is not immediately removed, Lingering Dead allows your Reanimates to use their Regenerate ability to regain three figures from their unit!

Writhing Worms

Few in the realm of Terrinoth had seen them before Waiqar’s onslaught, but carrion worms have been often spotted following Waiqar’s armies, feeding on the scraps and offal cast off by the fleshwrights who tend his legions. Carrion worms are surprisingly swift for their size and expel gouts of digestive ichor before setting upon their prey with shearing mandibles. Ridden by spear-wielding Reanimates, the carrion worm’s bile melts armor and flesh alike, allowing their riders to strike mortal blows against even the best-defended targets.

Carrion grubs may be small, but their digestive acid is no less corrosive. Waiqar’s cruelest carrion worm masters discovered that they could feed the grubs nearly any substance, be it stone or metal or wood. As they grew, the grubs took on some of the properties of whatever they were fed. A diet consisting of chum and flesh would give the creatures a sickly, blood-colored cast, while those worms that feasted on bone would have a sallow, calcified carapace. Some of Waiqar’s most prized lieutenants ride atop carrion worms force-fed copper or even obsidian. Of course, most carrion worms have ingested several unlucky Reanimate handlers, as well.

As high-impact siege units, Carrion Lancers are among the deadliest troops in Waiqar’s battalions. In the Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion, you'll find two additional Carrion Lancer figures for your legions—one sculpt identical to the Core Set version, and one entirely new sculpt, showing the Carrion Lancer rearing up and ready to strike.

Whether you’re using a single Carrion Lancer to harry your opponent’s flank, or sending as many as six smashing straight into your opponents, you’ll be able to use the disgusting bile that the carrion worms vomit in order to gain an advantage. First, Carrion Lancers can use their Skill action to spew acid at an unengaged unit within range one to five and give that unit a blight token. Not only can this blight token inhibit that unit in battle, your Carrion Lancers can spend surges to deal mortal wounds if their target is blighted! When you’re facing off against high-defense units such as the Rune Golems, cutting straight through their defenses can be crucial to victory.

And of course, you also have the option to embed a Carrion Lancer into an infantry unit as an additional figure with the upgrade cards included in this expansion. Front Line Carrion Lancer allows you to use surges as mortal strikes if the defender has a blight token, while Support Carrion Lancer lets you inflict a blight token on an unengaged enemy within range. Obviously, either of these upgrades could be potent on their own—but perhaps the most dangerous usage is to combine them, spewing bile with one unit and cutting down your foes with a second unit.

Waiqar has already made his first incursions into the realm of Terrinoth, tearing past the outer defenses and clashing on the battlefields of Terrinoth. Soon, his reinforcements will join him, and every barony may fall into the mists.

Announcing Six New Expansions for the Runewars Miniatures Game

Battles continue to rage across the ancient land of Terrinoth, as the Daqan Lords and Waiqar’s Undead Legion expand their armies, new powerful heroes join both sides. The fires of war rain upon both factions and new reinforcements are vital to victory.

Each expansion offers a unique way to continue to grow your Runewars Miniatures Game army. The Spearmen Unit Expansion and the Reanimates Unit Expansion offer identical sculpts to those found in the Runewars Core Set, but offer new upgrade cards and enough miniatures to field another version of each unit in your army. The Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion and Rune Golems Unit Expansion offer two sculpts each, one identical sculpt to the version found in the Core Set and one new sculpt, as well as additional upgrade cards. Finally, the Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion and the Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion introduce two brand new heroes to the world of the Runewars Miniature Game, each with their own unique upgrades and sculpts.

Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion

As a young man, Lord Hawthorne’s home of Seragart was beset by a horde of barbarians led by a mysterious warlord wielding foul sorcery. As a descendent of Sir Rodric the Strong, Hawthorne was not one to sit idly by. Though badly outnumbered, Hawthorne charged out of the gates with the city’s remaining troops, taking the barbarians by surprise, and uncovering the malicious power behind the attacks: the renegade sorcerer Ankaur Maro. Though the defenders of the city were eventually able to break the siege, Maro managed to escape.

Hawthorne was knighted for his bravery in the defense of Seragart, and vowed to never again let a foe escape his blade. Now, rumors swirl that Ankaur Maro has made his return as a servant of Waiqar, and Lord Hawthorne rides forward, determined to defeat his old foe once and for all.

The Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion includes two different figures for Lord Hawthorne to add to your Daqan army, a mounted and unmounted version, as well as six new upgrade cards, four of which will improve any army and two that are exclusive to Lord Hawthorne. We'll explore the finer details of Lord Hawthorne in a future preview.

Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion

Few names inspire fear in the citizens of Terrinoth like Ankaur Maro. As a young wizard studying at the Universities of Greyhaven, Maro quickly became known for his great skill and even greater ambition. This drive and disregard for boundaries in pursuit of power became his undoing though, and Ankaur Maro was expelled from Greyhaven a disgrace. Not one to be deterred, Maro soon found himself in the inner circle of dark sorcerers, where he learned the secrets of flesh and blood and bone and death. Now, Maro has found a new home in the service of Waiqar the Undying, his powerful dark magic a beacon of strength for the undying legion.

The Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion comes with two Ankaur Maro figures for Waiqar’s forces in the form of cavalry and infantry versions, as well as six upgrade cards, four for use with any army and two exclusively for use with Ankaur Maro. We'll explore Ankaur Maro more in a future preview.

Rune Golems Unit Expansion

Deep within the ancient fortresses of Terrinoth stand ancient stone guardians, ever vigilant. These monoliths of war are only ever awakened when the need is dire, an only a few Lords and Wizards know the secrets that can imbue the golems with life. The strength and ferocity of these golems knows no equal, scything their massive blades through infantry and cavalry with ease. Rune Golems will stop at nothing to destroy the enemies of the Daqan, only to return to their hidden slumber until called upon again.

The Rune Golems Unit expansion features two Rune Golem Plastic Figures, one new sculpt and one identical to the Rune Golem found in the Core set, as well as eight upgrade cards to help you build your army anyway you choose. Look for a future preview detailing the damage these Rune Golems will do to your foes.

Spearmen Unit Expansion

When the fires of war threaten the land of Terrinoth, the rank-and-file of Daqan form a mighty bulwark to protect their homes, and the spearman rise to the challenge of keeping their lands safe. The rows of infantry clad in the Citadel’s own colors—majestic blue and gold—march as a symbol of safety and security to those who make their home in the Land of Steel.

The Spearmen Unit Expansion comes with eight Spearmen plastic figures and two plastic infantry movement trays to expand your Daqan army either through improving an already existing infantry unit or forming another. Five additional upgrade cards for any army will give you the tools you need to push back any force. Look for more information on the Spearmen in an upcoming preview.

Reanimates Unit Expansion

Though each Reanimate is but a fraction of the being they were when they followed Waiqar in life, the legion of skeletal warriors still strike fear into the hearts of those that would stand against them. An unquenchable spite and unbreakable loyalty to the dread Waiqar the Undying drive the legion forward to destroy anything in their path.

Expand your ranks of the undead with the Reanimates Unit Expansion. Featuring eight reanimate plastic figures in four different sculpts, the expansion contains everything you need to add a Reanimates infantry unit to your own army.
