To be a Rogue Trader and bear the sacred Warrant of Trade means journeys beyond the boundaries of the Imperium. Journey to the edge of space in the company of an Inquisitor and his unlikely allies: a cadre of Tau Fire Warriors. As you journey to confront an ambitious Rogue Trader, the Tau support you, and by using the Tau Character Guide, you can become a Tau Explorer yourself.

Click an image above to purchase a download of the supplement.

Twilight Crusade

Twilight Crusade is a three-part adventure that focuses on your mission to confront the heretical Rogue Trader, Vir Modren. Your Explorers must embark on a Grand Endeavour into the heart of Modren’s Realm, alongside the acolytes of an ardent Inquisitor and his unexpected allies – a hunter cadre of Tau from the far-flung reaches of the galaxy. To confront Modren directly, you must venture deep into his domain and negotiate his followers’ power-struggles, before gaining entry to Modren’s personal fortress.

This adventure’s Grand Endeavour provides your GM with an excellent framework to gauge your progress and success, no matter how you choose to venture deep into Modren’s Realm and navigate the intrigues within. This Endeavour can be modified to suit the GM’s needs, inviting freeform action from you and your fellow Explorers. To help the GM guide the Explorers even further, a detailed breakdown of the Grand Endeavour’s objectives can be found at the end of each chapter of the adventure. In addition, this adventure offers the perfect opportunity for players to use the Tau Character Guide, as Tau warriors feature extensively throughout Twilight Crusade.

For the Greater Good

The 43-page Tau Character Guide provides Rogue Trader players with all the necessary information and rules to play Tau Explorers, whether in the Twilight Crusade adventure or in another voyage across the Koronus Expanse. In this supplement, you find a concise history of the Tau Empire, rules to play Tau Warriors of the Fire Caste with various specialised classes, and an armoury for outfitting characters with the advanced technology and powerful wargear of the Tau empire.

As you realise your Fire Warrior more fully, you may choose to take alternate career ranks. The Tau Character Guide offers three options for alternate career ranks, enabling your Explorer to become a Pathfinder, a Drone Handler, or even a Battlesuit Pilot. Of course, the Tau Empire would be nothing without its hyper-advanced technology, and you’ll find plenty of equipment and battlesuits in the Tau Armoury. Whether you strike from afar with a Kroot Hunting Rifle, blind your foes with Tau Photon Grenades, or experience the raw power of an XV8 Crisis Battlesuit, you’ll find Tau technology is a great companion in the wild space of the Koronus Expanse.

Begin Your Journey

The hubris of Vic Modren’s realm can no longer stand as an affront to the Imperium. By the will of the Emperor, and for the Greater Good, Modren must fall. Are you prepared to embark on this adventure? Purchase Twilight Crusade and the Tau Character Guide, and begin your ship’s journey past the edges of the Koronus Expanse!

Download Shedding Light, an adventure for Rogue Trader today by clicking the section header below.

Originally written for use at Gen Con Indy 2013, Binding Contracts, Falling Star, Shedding Light, and Salvaging Solace are adventures for Warhammer 40,000 Roleplaying. The four linked scenarios concern the fate of the Imperial world of Solace. While each adventure stands on its own as a complete module suitable for immediate play, a group that plays all four adventures will spot the connections between the events as they transpire around the hive world of Solace.

Binding Contracts, Falling Star, Shedding Light, and Salvaging Solace each include a full adventure, pre-generated characters, and the profiles for any NPCs unique to the adventure. Each is designed to be run with the system for which it was written and requires a copy of the appropriate Core Rulebook to play. Using all four of these adventures, a GM can create a cohesive event that tells the story of the Fall of Solace from multiple perspectives, revealing the many factors that contributed to the events slowly over the course of the four individual stories. Because these adventures were originally written for use at a convention, each one includes notes on the time that should be devoted to given sections. If the GM wishes to run one of these adventures in a typical four to six hour convention timeslot, these notes can be useful; if the GM is not under any time restrictions, however, he should feel free to pace the adventure as he sees fit based on the group and other circumstances.

Shedding Light

In this adventure for Rogue Trader, the Explorers delve deep into the ancient secrets of Solace. Solace was colonised by the Imperium in the final hours of the Angevin Crusade to unite the Calixis Sector, but its secrets wind perilously back into times forgotten by all but the most ancient. There have always been dark tales in Solace’s mines about the things that dwell beneath the world’s parched surface, but there have also been whispers of fortunes beyond the comprehension of any mortal. These whispers have spread far and wide and have reached the ears of a daring Rogue Trader, a warrior-privateer who braves the dangers of the unknown in the name of incalculable wealth and glory. Now, an avid group of Explorers journey to Solace, delving deep into an ancient chasm that contains strange relics of forgotten aeons. But when a cataclysm rocks the world of Solace, the Explorers find themselves facing a terrible threat that is not pleased about its rude awakening.

Download Today!

Purchase Shedding Light today, and determine the fate of Hive Solace!
Faith and Coin, the latest Rogue Trader supplement is now available for download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com! In this guide, for players and GMs, the complex relationships between missionaries and Rogue Traders come to life, with new Endeavors to complete and new worlds to convert. Find sacred relics, smite vile heretics, or embark on new Alternate Career Paths with the grace of the God-Emperor guiding you every step of the way.

A Word From the Developer

Lead developer Max Brooke gives an overview of Faith and Coin:

The Koronus Expanse is a realm of unlimited opportunity and incalculable risk. It teems with life, from deadly alien beasts to incomprehensible xenos species to human populations rendered utterly strange by aeons of isolation. To prepare these lost human populations for their return to the dominion of the Imperium, Rogue Traders are required to give passage to missionaries, wandering priests who carry the Emperor's Light into the darkness of the fringes. These representatives of the Imperium work to introduce their faith on these far-flung worlds, subverting local faiths by weaving elements of the Imperial Creed into local religions and mythologies. Of course, different missionaries use extremely different methods. Some bring the Emperor's light with zeal and fire, burning down the old edifices to glorify the Emperor, while others wander alone in the darkness, quietly sowing seed of faith that their successors can reap in centuries or even millennia to come.

The relationship between these representatives of the Imperial Creed and those who carry a Warrant of Trade is one of mutual necessity, punctuated by both conspiracy and conflict. Many Rogue Traders rely on itinerant priests to maintain the spiritual health of their crews and to open inroads upon new worlds they can exploit. Missionaries, for their part, often benefit from the unique resources a Rogue Trader can provide above and beyond transit between the stars. The vast material wealth of a Rogue Trader, the keen mind and expansive knowledge of a seneschal, or the raw might of a warship can all accelerate the conversion of a given world tremendously. Not all Rogue Traders are willing to put piety before profit, however, and such alliances of convenience can shatter at the drop of a coin.

Faith and Coin is a supplement for players and Game Masters that explores the role the Imperial Creed in Rogue Trader through the tales of four different missionaries who set out into the Koronus Expanse and sought an ancient secret—the lost tomb of Saint Cognatius, which is said to contain priceless relics and miraculous archeotechnology alike. The book uses the framework of their stories to delve into the ways the Imperial faith can be a powerful tool for many characters in Rogue Trader. It offers new options not only for Missionaries, but for any Explorers who interact with the Imperial Creed in the Koronus Expanse—or at least turn a profit by it. This volume includes new Endeavours that crews can undertake as they use the Imperial faith to build the fortune of their dynasty, Alternate Career Ranks Explorers can use to gain powerful new knowledge and abilities, and a host of weapons, armour, equipment, and powerful relics of past holy warriors for smiting heretics in the Koronus Expanse. Finally, it contains an adventure, The Sacred Heart, which allows the Explorers to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors in seeking the legendary tomb of Saint Cognatius.

Faith and Coin is full of new options and stories for both players and Game Masters to pursue, and I'm looking forward to hearing how readers use it to expand their characters and campaigns!

A Word From the Developer Lead developer Max Brooke gives an overview of Faith and Coin: The Koronus Expanse is a realm of unlimited opportunity and incalculable risk. With visual depictions of the great missionaries who have worked tirelessly to spread the Imperial Creed, players can get a sense of who these loyal servants to the Imperium were, and how their legacies live on in the Koronus Expanse. In today's designer diary, lead developer Max Brooke and art coordinator Andy Christensen present an inside look at the development of an art piece depicting Nicomedes Keefe, a missionary whose story figures prominently into Faith and Coin.

Lead Developer Max Brooke Our previous Faith and Coin article focused on the creation of the stories of the missionaries. This time, we want to illuminate a bit about their visual depictions and the concepts behind them.

The process started out with the character description that contributing writer John Dunn gave us in the story of Nicomedes Keefe and in his notes on the missionary. In the text, John consistently reinforced Keefe's sturdy, pragmatic faith and his keen mind. Thus, when art coordinator Andy Christensen and I sat down to brainstorm the visual representations of the missionaries highlighted in Faith and Coin, this is where we began our discussion. We considered the story John had presented, and those qualities that Keefe possesses that should be visually recognizable in the art.

Keefe is consistently described as a figure who believes that the challenges of a missionary can be solved with thought and tenacity, a luminary who sees toil in the Emperor's name as the highest service. To evoke this focus on work (both physical and spiritual) and concrete solutions, Andy and I decided that Keefe should be a solidly built figure. To differentiate him from the other missionaries and their radically different methods for converting worlds, Andy suggested that we focus his humble-servant nature by depicting his robes as simple, stained, and well-worn. John's original character notes described Keefe as having a mustache and goatee—we decided to iterate on this idea, giving Keefe a full, slightly unkempt beard, as if he had just come out of a spiritual journey into the wilderness. This fit particularly well with Keefe's exploits in Faith and Coin, which take him into the wilds of the Koronus Expanse on his spiritual journey—often alone, as on Ikeran and on the dusty world of Pratus.

This description seemed to be headed in the right direction, but there was something missing from the concept. We wanted to show Keefe in the act of toil, wandering from world to world across the Expanse, collecting and dispensing the Emperor's wisdom. To evoke this, Andy had the idea of showing Nicomedes in the midst of his holy toil of spreading the Emperor’s World, pulling a cart full of relics and tomes of sacred lore. In this act, Nicomedes is literally dragging knowledge of the faith across the Koronus Expanse.

We both liked this idea, but Andy wanted something to firmly root the cart in the 41st Millennium. It needed to not just be a cart, but something altogether more poetic and insane. We discussed several options, including a cart pulled by a strange servitor or alien beast, or even to have the device be a back-mounted shrine or lectern (this idea recurred elsewhere, so keep your eyes peeled for it as you read Faith and Coin). After some back-and-forth, Andy suggested a cart pulled by both a small army of hovering servo-skulls and, of course, Keefe himself. As soon as he said it, we both knew this was the direction to go.

The final guidance we came up with for the artist was as follows: "A male Missionary in a humble and tattered bone-coloured robe that has clearly been heavily used. He has an impressive beard, and is pulling a cart behind him by chains that are wrapped around his shoulders. The cart is also being pulled by a set of servo skulls, and is full of relics, books, masonry, statuary, and other artefacts. An ornate hammer is displayed prominently on the cart."

Now, I turn you over to Andy for some notes on his own process. Take it away, Andy!

Art Coordinator Andy Christensen

For this piece, I chose to work with Matt Bradbury. Matt has a great understanding of the unique visual style of "40k", and it's always a pleasure to see what he comes up with based on our initial art description. As I requested, he kept the first sketch quite rough as I knew that we would likely be developing this concept as we go.

Sometimes concept sketches like these evolve considerably as the art coordinator and the artist work together; other times, the process is more about the little refinements. I had some modifications I suggested for this piece:

Matt got us off to a great start. Looking at his initial sketch, we wanted to push the idea of a "mobile library" of Imperial resources, holy relics and scripture. Also, the idea that this cart is quite a burden (a holy burden) for Nicomedes to tow around far-flung worlds on foot. We came up with the idea of of adding an impressive shrine/library to the cart. This gave us another opportunity to include some of that iconic Imperial style based on gothic architecture (and of course, festooned with loads Imperial iconography).

As we proceeded, we also chose to make the servo-skulls into more of a "team" to assist with the burden, as well as prominently displaying his massive warhammer - which became the symbol for his doctrinaires centuries later. Here is the final piece, as it appears in Faith and Coin:

As an interesting addendum, the idea of a servo-skull cart kept right on rolling, and went on to appear in other places in Faith and Coin…

Thanks Max and Andy! Faith and Coin will be available soon, so head to your local retailer to pre-order it today!

As Rogue Traders venture across the Koronus Expanse, and beyond, they often travel in the company of missionaries. Faith and Coin, an upcoming supplement for Rogue Trader, explores the complex relationships between Rogue Traders and Missionaries, as both parties work to further their own ends—and of course, carry out the will of the Emperor. In today’s Designer Diary, contributing writer John Dunn introduces Saint Cognatius, and sets the stage for The Sacred Heart, an adventure included in Faith and Coin.

Traders and Missionaries

The activities and agents of the Missionarus Galaxia within the Koronus Expanse offered a great opportunity to explore some of the region's ancient secrets and sacred legends. As Rogue Traders journey the vast expanse of the galaxy beyond the Imperium of Man, they often encounter lost splinters of humanity. Many of these lost children of Terra do not know the grace of the God-Emperor, nor do they recognise the authority of the Imperium—and both of these facts must change if the Imperium is to prosper and reclaim its rightful domain amidst the stars of the Koronus Expanse. Missionaries, in the service of the Adeptus Ministorum, exist to address such problems. These able stalwarts eagerly accept berths aboard Rogue Trader vessels in the hopes that they can serve His cause by converting some of these benighted souls to accepting their faith in the God-Emperor. These devoted souls embrace their responsibility to reunite the long lost relatives with the Imperium of Man, so that they might know salvation in His light—and so that the Imperium can dominate these worlds much more easily once it reclaims the Koronus Expanse.

In spite of the vast reach of the Imperium of Man, there remain huge numbers of worlds beyond its reach. Countless among these have been colonised by descendants of Terra. Within the unknowable environments of these alien worlds humanity has developed in a huge number of different ways—both physically and culturally. Many of these colonies have succumbed to corruption in some form, whether it be in the form of uncontrolled psykers dominating the population or wicked pacts with things beyond reality. However, even among those populations that have not fallen to the temptations of the Warp or other malign influences, only a very few are immediately ready for the Imperium of Man to arrive demanding tithes.

For the vast majority that are unprepared for the Imperium’s return, Missionaries work to ready the populations to accept the Imperium’s dominion centuries or even millennia before the Imperium truly reaches these worlds. This requires a concerted effort to subvert the local faiths to fit within the grand and varied tapestry of the Imperial Creed while purging elements that cannot be tolerated. Of course, different missionaries have very different approaches to fulfilling these duties, and even radically varied definitions of what can be tolerated and what must be destroyed.

Rogue Traders and their subordinates play a critical role in the work of missionaries. Beyond merely ferrying missionaries from world to uncharted world, Rogue Traders often become involved in the task missionaries strive to fulfill—though whether their support comes from genuine piety, raw avarice, or something in between depends on the individual Rogue Trader. A Rogue Trader and his crew can stand to make a great deal of money by backing the right missionary at the right time, and the skills that a Rogue Trader and especially his Seneschal can bring to the missionary’s effort can be invaluable.

The Ways of St. Cognatius

Many missionaries have worked among the human-held worlds of the Koronus Expanse over its history. Some among them are linked by the legend of an ancient figure, a fierce devotee of the God-Emperor remembered as St. Cognatius. As one of the very few saints recognised by the Ecclesiarchy and associated with the Koronus Expanse, many have sought out his patronage while they travelled through this region. Dozens of devotees have undertaken missions of conversion and faith with the legends of St. Cognatius at the forefront of their minds. Many missionaries have hoped to emulate the success he enjoyed in the region, millennia ago. Others hope that they might find his final resting place, so that they can discover the miraculous archeotechnology and ancient relics that legends associate with his triumphs.

The first chapter of Faith and Coin focuses on the legends of four different missionaries, who all served within the Koronus Expanse. Each encountered a range of different challenges, but each also followed a distinct methodology as part of his or her mission. All were loyal and true servants of the Ecclesiarchy, but each chose to follow a distinctive means to convert worlds unknown. St. Cognatius and his legend served as the one additional link that each of these missionaries shared. All sought to uncover his legend, in the hopes that they might gather further glory for the Imperium by recovering his sacred Tomb.

The broad range of different approaches serves to illustrate both the differing philosophies that are active within the Ecclesiarchy, but also some of the variety of responses possible to those beliefs. As the missionaries interacted with the various worlds of the Koronus Expanse, they faced a number of different challenges—both from the dangers implicit on the worlds and from the agents of the Imperium who sought to destroy them rather than offer them support. Their stories can be part inspiration and cautionary tale to a missionary operating in the Koronus Expanse in their wake. Now, centuries later, the organisations and relics they left behind for their successors provide resources for those with the drive to seek them. And some whisper that these legends, logs, and clues even contain the secret location of the final resting place of St. Cognatius and his relic ship, the Sacred Heart...

Thanks, John!

His grace and guidance shines a perpetual light upon them.” Nadine Aleynikov, disciple of St. Cognatius

Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce Faith and Coin, the latest Rogue Trader supplement! It is a Rogue Trader’s duty to assist in spreading the Imperial Creed across the stars, helping missionaries as they wander from world to forgotten world. In turn, Rogue Traders reap the profits from the seeds that missionaries sow.

Lead developer Max Brooke gives a taste of what is to come in the upcoming Faith and Coin:

Thanks Max! I have acquired charts of an infallible Warp route to the heart of the Cluster, and shall be following a more reliable trail than these foolish legends to the treasures that others are too craven to seek.” –Last recorded statement of Lord-Captain Obadiah Cal (current whereabouts unknown)

In September, Fantasy Flight Games announced the upcoming release of Stars of Inequity, a supplement for Rogue Trader that focuses on the perilous worlds of the Expanse. Meanwhile, players can brave the dangers of planetside missions, crossing the surface of shadowy worlds to explore deadly jungles, ancient ruins, crashed voidships, and more. And with the Colony Creation rules, your group can construct, expand, and control its own outposts on the lost and forgotten worlds of the Expanse!

Now, with the release of Stars of Inequity just a week away, we’re pleased to present a closer look at its engaging World Generator rules.

Expanding the Boundaries

It is every Rogue Trader’s sacred duty to expand the boundaries of the Imperium into those territories that do not recognize the dominion of the Emperor. This is a category that includes a regrettably large percentage of the galaxy, including tens of thousands of stars and planets. Across the galaxy, from the Eastern Fringe to the guttering embers of the Halo Stars, the fleets of Rogue Trader dynasties toil and strive to expand their domains and fortunes. By extension, they expand the frontiers of the Imperium they serve, carrying the Emperor’s Light into the void.

Many such efforts have been focused on the Koronus Expanse since the first passage through the Maw, but only a tiny fraction of its secrets are known. Dozens of systems have been thoroughly catalogued by the competing dynasties or the Explorator fleets, but hundreds more only exist as long range flickers on a voidship’s auger arrays. The number that have yet to be found at all cannot even be estimated. The Disciples of Thule once devoted vast cogitator arrays to calculating the probable answer, but every time they neared their conclusion, new variables pushed back their attempt. Some claim the effort is still ongoing, but most sources agree that the project was scrapped as a waste of resources after a century without conclusive results.

Many of those who devote their lives to the mastery of the Expanse often divide it into a number of vast territories; more experienced explorers know that the stars do not acknowledge the attempts of mortals to name and categorize them, and make fewer assumptions. The area called the Heathen Stars holds all the lost colonies and degenerate realms of Mankind that the legends say, and more—but it is also home to countless worlds which no human has ever set foot upon. There are hidden paradise worlds in the Accursed Demesne, secrets undreamed of in the heart of Winterscale’s Realm, and perhaps even new systems being birthed amidst the Far Corpse Stars. That some think to understand such incomprehensibly huge reaches of space is as much a testament to Mankind’s arrogance as to the prowess of its astrocartographers.

The World Generator in Stars of Inequity includes a number of tools to help detail these undiscovered secrets of the Expanse, and help Game Masters include them in their games of Rogue Trader. An interconnected set of random generation Tables allows Game Masters to procedurally create cohesive settings, from star clusters to planets. The World Generator rules draws on environmental, planetary, and system wide, with results on each level influencing each of the others. In this way, it moves from Systems, the vast areas in the thrall of a star, to Planets and other System Features to specific Environments and the phenomena, creatures, and societies that can be found inhabiting each one.

The Lure of Uncharted Space

For more on this particular feature, we turn to Stars of Inequity contributing writer Jordan Goldfarb:

My highest priority in making the World Generator for Stars of Inequity was making sure I made something fresh, that had a depth and development beyond the existing tools, like the much smaller generator in the Game Master's Kit. That was a tool that had served me well in previous games of Rogue Trader, so I wanted to make sure I was creating something bigger and better, and not retreading the same ground. With a huge generator that can be used to anything from generate dozens of linked systems in a star cluster to a single highly detailed world, I would like to think I accomplished this goal.

The World Generator is made up of linked generation systems, with each focusing on a different aspect of the process—individual star systems, planets and other objects in the system, and the environments that exist on these worlds to put within the larger context. They can be used independently, but work best when harnessed together, so that you can see the effects of one layer interacting with the next. A cold, sullen star is likely to have cold, sullen planets orbiting it—although there are many strange anomalies to be found in the Expanse.

The bulk of the generator is spent on making fully realized worlds for exploration. With some quick rolls of the dice (or just some carefully chosen results, if you don't feel like doing it randomly), you can make anything from an ice world teeming with stranded Orks to a desolate rock concealing precious minerals beneath its sun-scorched crust. We tried to make sure that every world you generate is going to have something interesting about it, so that your players will never feel like exploring a new region is a waste of time. Potential profit abounds in the Koronus Expanse, if an Explorer has the will to seize it!

Lost Realms in the Void

My personal favorite feature of the World Generator is the introduction of System Features, which define vast areas of space by linking them to a common theme. Some regions might be veritable paradises with an unusual number of rich, habitable worlds. Others have developed fearful reputations based on the baleful glow of stellar phenomena or strange events of ill-omen. In some cases, a System Feature will include all of the above! In practical terms, this means that every region of space has a hook to draw in your group and make them want to go there, if only to prove themselves against the dangers for the sake of their reputations and for glory.

Thanks, Jordan! For more, download our excerpt from chapter one of Stars of Inequity (pdf, 2.1 MB). Then, look for in on store shelves next week!

The Warp! Always there. Always struggling to get out. Only a thought away! The Daemon populace ever ready to liberate themselves from the netherworld and take possession of ours. Measured by the years of a man’s life, the Imperium is eternal. And so, therefore, must be our vigil. If we slip in our duty, the end will surely dawn and an eternity of darkness shall reign!” –Inquisitor Silas Hand, Ordo Malleus

The Navis Primer, a supplement for Rogue Trader, is now on sale at your local retailer and through our webstore!

This powerful volume reveals the secret history of the Koronus Expanse’s Navigator Houses, while unveiling the Astropath Voidfrost and Soul Ward Disciplines. Players can unleash the unpredictable might of the Waaagh! with the Ork Weirdboy Career Path, and uncover new warp-touched powers, alternate career ranks, and elite advances for Explorers of all kinds. What’s more, The Navis Primer provides expanded rules for navigation and astrotelepathic communication, and presents terrifying new hazards and foes from the depths of the Expanse!

Connected to the Immaterium

For more on The Navis Primer, here’s a word from its lead developer, Max Brooke:

The warp is the stormy sea that Rogue Traders must cross in search of fame, glory, and, of course, profit. A Rogue Trader's mighty voidship is a large part of what makes this miracle possible, but no less important are those who possess an innate connection to the Immaterium.

From the secretive Navigator Houses whose members guide vessels through the roiling Sea of Souls to the esoteric Choirs of Astropaths who cast messages across the cold void, those with the ability to perceive or manipulate the power of the Warp are both critical to a Rogue Trader's ambition and very interesting characters in their own right. The Navis Primer contains new options for the histories of Navigators and Astropaths in the Koronus Expanse, as well as expanded rules for the tasks they must overcome and new powers to help them rise to these challenges. Further, it includes a number of new character options for other Explorers whose lives have been touched by the Warp in one way or another, whether they harness it for profit or seek to unlock its darkest mysteries.

Of course, not all of those touched by the Warp are loyal to the Imperium—or even human– and The Navis Primer explorers the psykers and Warp-entities that dwell in the Expanse. This includes resources for new enemies and their terrifying powers, and also a new psyker Career Path, the erratic Ork Weirdboy.

The Navis Primer is loaded with new possibilities, and I'm looking forward to hearing the wild and Warp-touched stories that players and Game Masters alike use them to create.

Navigate to your local retailer and unleash the power of the warp in your Rogue Trader campaigns!

Today, Art Coordinator Mike Linnemann joins the discussion, delving into the process and psyche of the Navigator as he previews some of the art from The Navis Primer.

Rogue Traders make their fortune by traveling the cold gaps between the light of the stars. To do this, they require the assistance of Navigators, specialized, sanctioned mutants who use their pineal eye to guide vessels through the hostile Sea of Souls that is the Immaterium. Their ability is to see into the Warp, navigating giant ships across the universe for the Imperium. These practices are often too terrifying for most to even comprehend, let alone conduct without simply going mad. But the Emperor’s will shall be done, and the Navigators alone can make it happen.

These men and women, though able to see and decipher the Warp directly, cannot simply lead a ship along a line to a destination. They need maps. Journeys can take months, years, decades, or even centuries with the best Navigators guiding a ship into and successfully out of the Warp. But their maps do not mark routes and destinations with linear distances or landmarks. Such things have no sway in the Warp.

The Warp is not like a highway, easily accessed from an onramp. It is not even like the Autobahn. Imagine it more like a stream. Imagine then, a Navigator guiding the ship through the current of Warp energy, fighting storms and undercurrents, and guiding the ship past the dread realms that swirl in the wake of the Chaos gods. Navigators cannot follow the canned instructions of a GPS past familiar landmarks; a Navigator must feel the planets within the Warp and knows that a storm is near, that a star has been passed, and that the ship is near its destination. Therefore the map needs to be emotional and turbulent, shifting and uncertain.

Art direction started with that foundational idea: one Navigator’s personal map.

This is not a painted representation; this is a living map, a thing that a navigator would paint and repaint dozens if not hundreds of times during a voyage, feeling the emotional tugs of relationships between celestial bodies.

A Navigator’s Map of the Koronus Expanse

Notice the vibrant color within the map. Planets are not circular masses but rather absences of Warp energy: holes in the fabric of the Immaterium. Through the hole, one can see the color of the paper that a Navigator is painting upon. Unlike on the maps in the first article, these planets are not presences in the darkness but are instead absences in the Warp. If you inspect the map closely, you will see the Navigator’s paint moving around these omissions, just as the Warp ebbs and flows around it.

A Navigator does not see asteroid fields or massive storms. He or she sees the Warp disturbances that roil around the danger, like a section of rapids in a river. Something stirs the current into a churning frenzy from below and the Navigator, through practice, knows the difference between benign disturbances that arise around an asteroid field and rifts through which Daemons of the Chaos Gods can tear their way into reality, even through a Gellar Field. Through their training in the ways of the Warp, Navigators come to understand the emotional currents that flow through environments and organisms alike. When something lies beneath the surface, they simply know.

Thanks, Mike. Next week, navigate your way to your friendly local retailer; The Navis Primer is coming soon!

The Astropath carries His torch to the darkest corners of space. We go in His Name, by His Will, for His Glory. And, of course, for the tidy profit we earn for our efforts in his grandest of plans." –Rogue Trader Raol Straud

The release of The Navis Primer, the upcoming supplement for Rogue Trader, is just two weeks away!

To prepare for its release, we’re pleased to present a two-part article series focusing on some of its artwork. For more, here’s a word from developer Max Brooke:

A Navigator's Perspective

When The Navis Primer was in early stages of development, we knew that it should have a new map of the Koronus Expanse, this time through the lens of the Navigators. These strange and esoteric individuals wield a power that not only allows a Rogue Trader’s vessel to make its daring leaps into the stuff of Chaos itself, but also gives them an incredibly different view of the universe around them, and we wanted to reflect one way that this unique perspective might manifest itself.

However, we would be remiss if we didn’t first trace our way back to the original maps for the Rogue Trader RPG, and so that is exactly what this first article will do. To get a sense of what the thought process behind these maps and their creation, I spoke to Ross Watson, Lead Developer of the Rogue Trader Core Rulebook.

Ross described to me how both maps in the Rogue Trader Core Rulebook were designed to evoke ancient nautical maps. Though the stylized map that has dutifully appeared in every Rogue Trader volume does this more obviously, emblazoned as it is with compasses, calipers, and menacing creatures that represent mankind’s fear of the unknown, both maps depict a realm influenced by historical periods of exploration. The Koronus Expanse is a realm very different from Earth today, or even hundreds of years ago, of course, but it carries the echoes of eras in which maps depicted the world with far less certainty and far more trepidation. Describing the Koronus Expanse, Ross recounted to me a description he had used early on:

“Imagine a dark room with a door that opens into a bright hallway. The room is the Koronus Expanse, and the hallway is the Calixis Sector. You can see a few things in the room where the light touches, and that’s what’s on the map, but it eventually fades off into shadow.”

Places of Shadow

These places of shadow include vast realms such as the Rifts of Hecaton, into which ships vanish, never to return. Besides the most imposing of unknown places, though there are many other wells of darkness surrounding the rare points of light, some named and others marked only by cryptic warnings such as “beware the Siren Star” or renderings of dread beasts that one hopes were merely the artist’s embellishments.

These maps give us two views into ways that the Koronus Expanse is organized and interpreted by Rogue Traders and their daring crews as they shuffle from star to star, skittering through patches of darkness with the hope that they will someday reach light again. To them, the Expanse is a grand unknown and an even grander opportunity—assuming, of course, that they do not disappear somewhere in the uncharted swathes, their fortune and fame overshadowed by the vastness of the Koronus Expanse.

But how might a Navigator, whose Warp Eye grant a truly unique perspective on the universe at large, see the Koronus Expanse? After all, for all the Rogue Trader’s flair or the helmsman’s skill, it is the Navigator alone who guides a vessel through the roiling dream-sea of the Warp. For that, you’ll have to wait for our next article; Mike Linnemann, Art Coordinator on The Navis Primer, will share his insights.

Keep checking back for more, and in just two weeks, unleash the power of the Warp in your Rogue Trader campaigns!

There, in the eternal horizon, lies our glory and our gain!” –Rogue Trader Alexei Magn

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Stars of Inequity, a supplement for Rogue Trader that presents tempting new opportunities for those brave few who make their livings in the Koronus Expanse.

Stars of Inequity is a detailed resource that focuses on the perilous worlds of the Expanse. Game Masters can create their own new realms with the World Generator, a system designed to craft unique planets filled with terrible risks and unmatched potential for profit. Players can brave the dangers of planetside missions, crossing the surface of shadowy worlds to explore deadly jungles, ancient ruins, crashed voidships, and more. And with the Colony Creation rules, your group can construct, expand, and control its own outposts on the lost and forgotten worlds of the Expanse!

A Word From the Developer

For more on Stars of Inequity, here’s a word from lead developer Max Brooke:

The most miraculous part of a Rogue Trader's lot in life stems from the ability to travel freely—not just within the bounds of the Imperium of Mankind, but beyond the Emperor's Light as well. The Navis Primer will cover the journey through the spiraling delirium of the Warp, and Stars of Inequity is about the destination: the countless worlds of the Koronus Expanse.

Stars of Inequity is a guide to crafting encounters and experiences within the vast realm of the Koronus Expanse. It features the World Generator, a system that allows for the rapid generation new regions of space and the individual worlds within them, as well as rules and inspiration for challenges in unique locales on these worlds. These rules are designed to help Game Masters and players journey together off of the beaten path, and into the unknown.

Another major feature of Stars of Inequity is Colony Creation, a set of rules for Explorers who wish to establish their own colonies in the Expanse, all in the name of vast financial gain and, of course, the God-Emperor. The Colony Creation rules allow Explorers to personally manage the infrastructure of their ventures or leave them in the hands of trusted Representatives while they journey on to new stars, new worlds, and new dangers in the 41st Millennium.

Stars of Inequity is full of possibility, peril, and, of course, profit. I'm very excited to hear about the new worlds, adventures, and stories that people use it to create.

Look for Stars of Inequity later this year, and delve into the the unknown to discover the shrouded corners of the Koronus Expanse!

Any who cross the Maw and sail the void of the Koronus Expanse learn to fear the wicked silhouettes of their ships and their seemingly endless cruelty towards all life, including their own. Only vigilance and firepower keep the worst depredations of these terrible raiders at bay, though from the dens of Footfall to the commerce halls of Port Wander there are countless tales of crew lost and ships savaged in their sudden attacks...

The Soul Reaver, an adventure in three parts for Rogue Trader, is now on sale via download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnpw.com! Namely, taking huge risks in the name of reaping massive profits. And what bigger gamble could there be than plucking an ancient and powerful warship from the very heart of a Dark Eldar city within the webway?

The Soul Reaver starts with a heist, but things are rarely as they seem when you're dealing with the treacherous Dark Eldar. The Explorers have to bet everything more than once to survive the machinations of several competing factions within the city and come away from this web of lies and betrayal with their promised reward. Of course, the Explorers have a chance to do some betraying of their own, and to this end, The Soul Reaver contains the Dark Eldar Kabalite Warrior Career Path. This full new Career, designed for use in this adventure and beyond, allows players to take the sadistic power of the Dark Eldar into their own hands for the first time in Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay.

I'm very excited about the new resources that The Soul Reaver contains for creating dangerous and memorable characters, and GMs and players alike should enjoy using these rules in their adventure through the twisted depths and perilous heights of Dark Eldar society!

Visit drivethrurpg.com or rpgnow.com, and download your copy of The Soul Reaver today!

Players and Game Masters alike can use these exciting options alongside the Kabalite Warrior Career Path featured in the main volume to explore new facets of the insidious Dark Eldar.

Masters of Suffering

Included in The Dark Kin is the Wych Career Path, for players who wish to take on the role of these elegant and brutal killers. To them, a dying breath is not a whisper heard from afar, but a billowing breeze that stirs around them each time they kill.

The Dark Kin (web-quality pdf, 2.4 MB) The Dark Kin (print-quality pdf, 23.9 MB)

(Chrome users: please download the file rather than view in browser for most accurate display.)

Further, it contains three Alternate Career Ranks to help players construct iconic Dark Eldar characters. The Skyterror is a master of aerial combat, the fiendish Fleshcrafter Disciple twists bodies into terrifying new forms, and the Incubus Initiate relentlessly pursues martial perfection. Only vigilance and firepower keep the worst depredations of these terrible raiders at bay, though from the dens of Footfall to the commerce halls of Port Wander there are countless tales of crew lost and ships savaged in their sudden attacks...

The Soul Reaver, an adventure in three parts for Rogue Trader, is now on sale at your local retailer and on our webstore! This epic campaign is a chance for daring Explorers to look deep into the twisted heart of Dark Eldar society in the Koronus Expanse, and pull the greatest heist of their careers.

Sadistic Power

For more on The Soul Reaver, here’s a word from developer Max Brooke:

Rogue Trader is all about risk and profit.

Visit your local retailer, and pick up your copy of The Soul Reaver today!

Will you master these foul creatures and rule the void, or become another foolhardy Explorer lost to the Expanse?

The Koronus Bestiary, a supplement for Rogue Trader, is now available for sale via download through drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com! This detailed compendium provides invaluable information on deadly beasts, hostile xenos, unholy daemons, and other dangers that fill the uncharted regions of the Koronus Expanse.

In addition to its many adventure seeds and plot hooks, The Koronus Bestiary also features art and descriptions for a range of foes, including Shadowkith, Thornmaws, Void Krakens, and a host of others. Looking for even more vile enemies? The Xenos Generator rules allow players to create alien species as varied and dangerous as they can imagine!

Threats to the Expanse

Humanity may have settled untold worlds in the Koronus Expanse, but only the most audacious of Rogue Traders would dare claim that it asserts any true dominion over this lawless region of space. For every conquered planet there are dozens more under the control of vile aliens. Explorers operating in the Expanse are sure to encounter these threats in their journeys, either by accident or design, and must be ready lest their ship and their profits be lost.

Each of The Koronus Bestiary’s chapters concentrates on one type of threat, ranging from savage monsters to predatory alien races to the terrors that lurk beyond reality. Chapter one examines some of the more dangerous beasts found across the Expanse, while chapter two covers the major sentient xenos races in this lawless region of space (such as the devious Stryxis, brutal Orks, treacherous Eldar, ferocious Rak’Gol, and much more). Next, chapter three presents a different sort of threat: foul warp spawn that not only destroy an Explorer’s body, but rend his very soul. Finally, Game Masters can use chapter four’s xenos generator to produce unique beasts, dangerous plant life and even primitive sentient races ripe for exploitation and indoctrination.

Innumerable terrors populate the uncharted planets of the Koronus Expanse. Dread and agony are our meat and wine, and they are plentiful indeed!” – Attributed to Asdrubael Vect

The Dark Eldar are a plague upon the Koronus Expanse; raiders, slavers, pirates, and even Rogue Traders suffer at their barbed lashes and blades.

Earlier this year, we announced the upcoming release of The Soul Reaver, an adventure in three parts for Rogue Trader. This epic campaign is a chance for daring Explorers to look deep into the twisted heart of Dark Eldar society in the Koronus Expanse, and pull the greatest heist of their careers. Now, with the release of The Soul Reaver just a few weeks away, we’re pleased to feature a word from one of its contributing writers, Nathan Dowdell:

Ruthless and Cunning

The Dark Eldar are a vile and depraved breed of sadists and murderers, vicious predators of the void who find insane strength and nightmarish vitality in the torments they inflict. Yet in spite of this – or perhaps because of it – the Dark Eldar are the latest species to become available as playable characters in Rogue Trader.

While the Dark Eldar are every bit as terrible as their dread reputations may suggest, they are also a selfish, ambitious, and mercenary people. Their culture is dominated by murderous politics, where advancement and loyalty both come at knife-point, and where any with sufficient desire and ruthlessness can achieve great heights. In this regard, they are little different from many of those who travel the untamed void as Explorers, and a willing Rogue Trader may find an unlikely ally in a Dark Eldar Kabalite Warrior.

The Soul Reaver provides circumstances by which a Dark Eldar character may join a group of Explorers, as well as the full rules for using a Kabalite Warrior character. In such a new ally, you may find a consummate warrior and assassin, whose powers only increase as the death toll rises. Every Dark Eldar feeds upon the pain and terror of others, and this is fully realised in game terms, with an assortment of traits and talents that represent the supernatural prowess that comes with a bounty of suffering. However, those Dark Eldar who cannot sate their unnatural thirst will find their powers waning and diminishing.

Furthermore, the book contains an extensive arsenal of Dark Eldar wargear, providing each Kabalite Warrior with the perfect tools with which to spread agony and despair. However, these tools are not only for Player Characters to enjoy.

The Soul Reaver contains a bestiary of Dark Eldar adversaries, covering everything from cruel Kabalite Warriors and vicious Wyches to shrieking Reaver Jetbikers and the horrific creations of the Haemonculi. All of these employ the same kinds of equipment, talents and traits that player characters can enjoy, making them a match for any who might cross their path. To round things out, rules for Dark Eldar starships and an assortment of vehicles that use the vehicle rules from Into the Storm can be found within this book as well, turning it into a comprehensive look at using the Dark Eldar as allies, enemies or both in your games of Rogue Trader.

Thanks, Nathan. Look for more on The Soul Reaver over the next few weeks, and head to your local retailer to place your pre-order!
