Die with pride, for you did so with honour in the name of the Emperor and the Primarchs. Sing your death song, write the final lines of your saga, discharge your death oath. Do all these things not as if you take your leave of this life, but as if you are returning home. -Deathwatch Chaplain Titus Strome

The will of the Emperor sends the Deathwatch through the most deadly regions of space, including the Jericho Reach, where the Deathwatch currently guards the universe as a sword against the darkness. The service of the Emperor is grim and dangerous, and only a few attain the honor of becoming a veteran of the Deathwatch. Those who survive are truly chosen by the Emperor.

The Emperor’s Chosen, a new supplement for Deathwatch, is now available for download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com! With it, you and your Battle-Brothers can experience the full weight of glory and responsibility laid upon the shoulders of those who have become Deathwatch veterans.

The Long Watch

The Emperor’s Chosen reveals the details of the lives and deaths of many of those honored ancestors. In addition to the memories of ancient heroes, this supplement also provides options for establishing a Heroic Legacy for your own Kill-team. By collectively spending experience points, a Kill-team can ascend together to the status of veterans, unlocking a series of new offensive and defensive roles that all members of the Kill-team can use. These roles are often vital in combat, including the vigilant Shepherd of Battle, who herds the enemy to the optimum position, or the Denier of Witches, dedicated to throwing off the Warp-craft of enemy psykers.

Purchasing a Heroic Legacy Package with experience points also allows a Kill-team to access new Manoeuvres and strategic options. These tactics allow a team to perform all-new offensive, defensive, and tactical Manoeuvres. Whether laying down Enfilading Fire, making a Feigned Flight, or Reinforcing other Battle-Brothers, these new Manoeuvres can tip the balance of the battle in favor of the Deathwatch.

In addition, The Emperor’s Chosen invites you to take part in a new adventure of terrifying proportions. Your team of Battle-Brothers must attempt to complete a mission begun by some of the Deathwatch’s greatest martyrs, and reclaim a relic for the Omega Vault. The journey is fraught with peril, as the Kill-team must defeat both evil monstrosities and the dark servants of the Ruinous Powers in order to stop an unholy ritual invoking the fearsome powers of Chaos!

A Word From the Developer

For more on The Emperor’s Chosen, here’s a word from developer Tim Flanders:

It is hard to define the greatest strength of the Battle-Brothers of the Adeptus Astartes. Each Battle-Brother is the Emperor’s wrath made manifest, bringing to bear the might of entire armies and possessing an adamantine will. However, I’ve always felt that the true strength of the Space Marines is the bond of brotherhood formed from decades of service in the name of the Emperor. In the Deathwatch this bond is possibly even more important than it is among other Space Marine Chapters, as a Kill-team must overcome the inherent differences between the individual Battle-Brothers to become a highly effective fighting force unto itself.

It was this notion of history and brotherhood that informed the development of The Emperor’s Chosen. The newest supplement for Deathwatch presents players with the opportunity to play Deathwatch Space Marines at their finest, with the experience of history guiding their actions and their trust in the Battle-Brother next to them driving them onward. This book provides players and GMs with the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of those legendary Kill-teams whose names are recorded in the histories of Watch Fortress Erioch, and it offers them the tools to take their place beside the most famous Space Marines of the Jericho Reach.

Are you prepared to advance in the Deathwatch, and walk in the footsteps of legends? Continue your watch, prepare for deadly action, and test your resolve against the perils of the darkness! In an earlier preview, the legacies of Deathwatch veterans, and their legendary kill-teams were explored. The Emperor’s Chosen allows dedicated and elite members of the Deathwatch to ascend to Deathwatch veteran. Kill-teams may follow in the footsteps of the heroic veteran squads that came before them with the Heroic Legacies included in The Emperor’s Chosen.

Those few Space Marines who have served the Emperor with distinction and honor in the Deathwatch, and their masterful Kill-teams serve to inspire those who would follow in their footsteps. Aspire to honor the Emperor and the memories of your predecessor with Heroic Legacies. In this upcoming supplement for Deathwatch, you’ll find Heroic Legacies that are modeled after the greatest veteran kill-teams ever to fight for the Imperium in the Jericho Reach Deathwatch. Contributing writer Jason Marker discusses the role of Heroic Legacies in The Emperor’s Chosen. Read what he has to say below, as you prepare to advance yourself and your Battle-Brothers into the next phase of glory with The Emperor’s Chosen!

A Kill-team of Legendary Prowess

In The Emperor's Chosen, I had the pleasure of writing Chapter II: Figures of Legend. The Battle-Brothers of the Adeptus Astartes are already larger than life heroes, mythic warrior-monks in power armor who journey across the galaxy in His service tackling threats too large or too horrific for other, lesser branches of the Imperial war machine. The goal of my assignment for this project was to discuss those Space Marines who had risen not only to the top of their home chapters, but to the the top of the Jericho Reach Deathwatch as well. These are the stories of Battle-Brothers who had faced the worst that the various xenos races could throw at them and come out not only alive, but covered in laurels.

To start, I wrote about Heroic Legacies. Kill-teams who have worked long together and distinguished themselves both in and out of battle can use their pooled experience points to buy a Historic Legacy. A Heroic Legacy is similar to a kill-team's squad abilities, but is something acquired by the Kill-team themselves and tailored to their experience and manner of working together. The core of the Heroic Legacy package is purchased by the players and provides several options for customization. The specifics are designed by the players and the Game Master, offering numerous options in offensive and defensive formations as well as special manoeuvres that allow a Kill-Team to shape their Heroic Legacy to their own particular combat style. So, a Kill-Team specializing in surgical strikes or stealth can build a powerful legacy around their particular form of warfare, enhancing their abilities and making them truly a power to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

In all, I really enjoyed working on this project and I hope that you, the players, enjoy the fruits of our labor. So go spend your XP, collect your laurels, and go knock some xenos’ heads together. Who knows, perhaps you and your Battle-Brothers will go down in Imperial histories, and your names will be whispered in the halls of the Deathwatch for millennia to come.

Thanks, Jason!

Check out the following pages (pdf, 688 KB), excerpted from The Emperor’s Chosen, for an example of a Heroic Legacy package, and a sample of Heroic Legacies to aspire to in this upcoming supplement. Then, gather your Battle-Brothers and prepare to fight for your place in the annals of history with The Emperor’s Chosen.

“The Battle-Brothers of the Adeptus Astartes are the finest warriors in the galaxy, indeed, the finest in the history of Mankind. We are strength, zeal, and wrath made flesh. Those who stand against us shall only know fear and utter annihilation.”
–Brother-Captain Belshazar of the Black Templars

Among those few brave Space Marines who are singled out and seconded to the Deathwatch, fewer still rise to become Deathwatch veterans. Most Space Marines who are given the honor to fight for the Emperor in the Deathwatch serve their time, and then return to their chapters with all of the glory and admiration that being a member of the Deathwatch carries. The Emperor’s Chosen, an upcoming supplement for Deathwatch, explores the select few who ascend to veteran status.

A Brotherhood Apart

Those Deathwatch Space Marines who, for whatever reason, elect not to return to their chapters after their secondment, may find that despite the different backgrounds of the Battle-brothers in their Kill-team, the Deathwatch is home. The bonds between the brethren of a Deathwatch Kill-team are forged from arduous battles endured together, and countless heroic and dangerous exploits that are all part of the job description of a Deathwatch Space Marine. To become a true veteran, acts of tremendous valor and glory must be performed in the name of the Emperor. Deeds carried out by one bring honor to the Kill-team. Secret knowledge is revealed, and long and lonely trips to the Outer Reach may shake the foundation of what the Space Marine, and his Battle-brothers, thought they knew. This new understanding of the galaxy and the weight of duty to the Emperor may be why some Space Marines take their oaths again and again with the Deathwatch, as they become veterans, and heroes.

The Emperor’s Chosen details just a few of the legendary veterans of the Deathwatch in the Jericho Reach. Those who ascended to such heights inspire great deeds and heroism on the battlefield for those who follow in their footsteps. The following pages (pdf, 766 KB) excerpted from Chapter II of The Emperor’s Chosen provide a sneak peek at the lives and deeds of the mighty few who came before.

Legacy of a Hero

Even rarer than a Deathwatch veteran is an entire Kill-team composed of those who have become veterans together. Through the horrors of innumerable battles, to leaving behind Chapter and identity to form a highly skilled and deadly unit, veteran Kill-teams become the ultimate weapon of the Emperor. Their skills are highly prized by the Watch Commanders, as well as the Chamber of Vigilance. Even the Inquisition may reach out to such stalwart units and ask for their help directly. The deeds and reputations of such teams will often precede them, becoming the stuff of legend to spur on the fledgling Kill-teams that will come after.

The Emperor’s Chosen provides new rules for creating Heroic Legacies for veteran Battle-Brothers of the Jericho reach. Kill-teams may jointly purchase these Legacies, to access combat roles, manoeuvres, and more, that an experienced Kill-team can use to better crush their enemies in the name of the Emperor. The following pages (pdf, 860 KB), excerpted from Chapter III of The Emperor’s Chosen, set the stage for the acquisition and use of Heroic Legacies in this supplement for Deathwatch.

Gather your Battle-Brothers and become legendary. With the ability to assume Heroic Legacies, and an adventure which puts players in the footsteps of their predecessors, The Emperor’s Chosen is an epic foray into the history of those who came before, as players work to become the legends of the future. Keep checking back for more news and previews of the upcoming Deathwatch supplement, The Emperor’s Chosen!

A single man’s failings may wreak havoc on the galaxy.” –Inquisitor Ghent

Only the most exceptional Battle-Brothers are seconded to the Deathwatch. Of those, only a rare few earn the right to be called Deathwatch veterans. Are you worthy enough to take your place among them?

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of The Emperor’s Chosen, a supplement for Deathwatch! A veritable who’s who of the Deathwatch’s most legendary heroes, The Emperor’s Chosen is dedicated to those rare Deathwatch Space Marines who ascend to the status of veteran.

This detailed tome lets players delve into the history of the Jericho Deathwatch and honor the heroic veteran Battle Brothers that have come before them. As part of a veteran Kill-team, Player Characters can assume a Heroic Legacy and combat their foes with tactical precision and martial excellence. Then, the included adventure invites Kill-teams to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and complete the mission that laid them low!

Veterans of a Thousand Conflicts

The length and breadth of the galaxy, the Imperium of Man stands on the brink of devastation. Facing threats from within, without, and beyond, the men and women of the Imperium toil tirelessly and without end to safeguard the million worlds they call home. Towering over these soldiers of Mankind are the Space Marines of the Adeptus Astartes, their gene-enhanced bodies making evident to the eye the superiority that their warrior spirits make manifest on the battlefield.

The Space Marines, the Emperor’s Angels of Death, are the finest soldiers the Imperium of Man has ever created. But among them are those who stand above their brethren, those whose resolve marks them out as survivors of battles and campaigns the likes of which would shatter the very sanity of mere mortals. Veterans of a thousand conflicts, these Battle-Brothers are paragons of their Chapters’ ideals and traditions, and they stand as exemplars for their brethren.

This book provides players and GM’s with the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of those legendary Kill-teams whose names are recorded in the histories of Watch Fortress Erioch and with the tools to take their place beside the most famous Space Marines of the Jericho Reach.

Thanks Tim! Check back for more on The Emperor’s Chosen in the coming weeks, then look for it on store shelves late in the second quarter of 2013. Prepare to pen your name in the history of the Jericho Reach!

Finally, in Darkness at the Core, the Kill-team must overcome the horrors of the Mortis Thule and make their escape, but it may cost more than they are willing to sacrifice.

What’s more, GMs can use the included Space Hulk Generator to create unique adventures set in the forlorn corridors of their own cursed Space Hulks!

Grand Adventure and Supernatural Horror

For more on Ark of Lost Souls, here’s a brief word from developer Tim Flanders:

Across the galaxy, from the Ultima Segmentum to the Halo Stars, few events stand as such stark omens of doom and disaster as the appearance of a Space Hulk. Each bloated mass of debris, voidship wreckage, and lifeless star-stuff meandering through the galaxy spreads a pall of misery and terror in its wake like a ghost ship of ancient Terran legend. Still, the passing of a Space Hulk is met with wild rumors of the archeotech treasures and priceless relics that may lie deep within its twisting corridors and forgotten holds. The chance to uncover such wonders is irresistible to many a treasure-hunter and seeker of secrets, and many have braved the xenos infestations and Warp-born horrors that stalk each Space Hulk for a chance to acquire some lost bit of technology or uncover some invaluable artifact of ages long past.

Grand adventure and supernatural terror await within the labyrinthine depths of each Space Hulk, and that feeling of excitement and tension is what we have captured in Ark of Lost Souls, the latest adventure supplement for Deathwatch. For many players and GMs, the draw of a Space Hulk adventure lies in delving into what is essentially a dungeon crawl in the depths of space. Even a single Space Hulk can provide a near-infinite wealth of possibilities for GM ingenuity and player creativity. Whether you’re moving from room to room through cramped corridors, fighting off stalking predators and hordes of mindless killing machines, or forging a path from the entrance to the dark heart of the cursed vessel while surrounded by darkness and maddening Warp-phenomena, the Space Hulk presents a setting in which GM and player imaginations can go wild.

And Ark of Lost Souls players are in for quite a ride aboard the Mortis Thule! They will face all manner of threats and uncover secrets from ages past as they delve its haunted corridors and cursed catacombs. Ark of Lost Souls offers Game Masters more than just a narrative adventure, too; it provides them with all the tools they might need to create adventures of their own aboard a Space Hulk.

It presents a three-part adventure set onboard an infamous Space Hulk, Mortis Thule, and functions as a Game Master’s guide to Space Hulks in general.

Today, Tim Flanders, one of the developers of this journey into the terrifying corridors of Mortis Thule, takes us through some of the design decisions concerning adventures within these massive derelicts.

Massive Derelicts

Across the galaxy, from the Ultima Segmentum to the Halo Stars, few events stand as such stark omens of doom and disaster as the appearance of a Space Hulk.

When it comes to representing these horrific settings in Deathwatch, each group will have its own play style and preferences. With that in mind, when it came time for us to make Ark of Lost Souls, we knew that we had an important design decision to make. Should we take the game in a very tangible and concrete direction, replete with tactical maps? Or should we focus on tone, mood, and the narrative experience? Ultimately, we felt that the Space Hulk board game published by Games Workshop already offers a superb experience for those groups seeking a fun, challenging, tactical combat game set aboard an iconic Space Hulk. For that reason, we chose the latter option for Ark of Lost Souls, and focused both the adventure module and the Space Hulk Mission Generator towards capturing the tone and the mood of a Space Hulk, rather than the tactical details.

A Treasure-Trove of Terror

Ark of Lost Souls is filled to bursting with stats and details on monstrous horrors, ancient treasures, unimaginable threats, and endless environments aboard all manner of ships—human and alien alike—trapped within the tenacious bulk of a Space Hulk. Madness, terror, and distorted realities may lie around every corner or behind every door. In a place that is ever-changing and is utterly indefinable, the pervading mood is more akin to a haunted house or insane labyrinth than the simple voidships that comprise its twisted form. The threats are both real and imagined, as scuttling can be heard down each pitch-black corridor and the feeling of a malign presence seeps from the very walls.

The Space Hulks in Ark of Lost Souls, which includes Mortis Thule in the adventure module and any derelicts the GM creates using the Space Hulk Mission Generator, are presented as a collection of locales, events, and encounters connected narratively by the Game Master and the players. During structured encounters, Game Masters who wish to build their own tactical experience with miniatures and maps are encouraged to do so. But either way, players will be free to take advantage of the fantastic atmospheres, phenomena, and adversaries presented throughout Ark of Lost Souls to push their campaign into the epic realm a Deathwatch game deserves.

Thanks Tim! Ark of Lost Souls is coming soon, so check back for more news as the Mortis Thule approaches...

In the face of a threat more violent than Orks, more insidious than Tau, more sadistic than Dark Eldar, what hope exists for mankind? There is but one: the Deathwatch.

The Outer Reach, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now on sale at your local retailer and though our webstore! All this, along with details on various Suhbekhar warriors, in-depth looks at the worlds beyond the reach of the Achilus Crusade, and scores of useful plot hooks, makes The Outer Reach an invaluable addition to any Deathwatch library.

Foes from Ages Past

For more on The Outer Reach, here’s a word from Deathwatch developer Tim Flanders:

Throughout the history of the Deathwatch line, we have gone to great lengths to make the Jericho Reach feel like a living, breathing setting in which players and Game Masters can play out their epic stories. With The Achilus Assault we brought readers into the history of the Achilus Crusade and set the stage for the setting's current timeline. Then, as our spiritual successor to that book, The Jericho Reach acted as a gazetteer for players and GMs to really sink their teeth into the events and conflicts that currently plague the setting.

With The Outer Reach, we've taken things in a new direction. We've pulled away from the Achilus Crusade to explore the darker stretches of the Jericho Reach. The Outer Reach is all about mystery, dread, and the evils lurking in the shadows between the stars. This book will give Game Masters the tools necessary to create vivid story lines that showcase exploration, prophecy, and even a new foe who's arrival may spell doom for the Jericho Reach. Players, too, will find their curiosity piqued with hints of ancient mysteries and confrontations with foes from aeons long-forgotten.

Do you dare face the encroaching darkness? Let us pray that we might learn their secrets before it is too late” –Prognosticator Renin Tri’el

In July, we announced the upcoming release of The Outer Reach, a supplement for Deathwatch. Revealing the secret dangers that lurk in the darkness between the stars, The Outer Reach gives players and GMs never-before-seen access to the enigmatic Dead Cabal, a mysterious circle of warrior-scholars who have devoted their lives to fathoming the unfathomable.

Now, with The Outer Reach coming to stores in just two more weeks, we’re pleased to present a glimpse into its disturbing mysteries!

Tainted Worlds

There are worlds throughout the Jericho Reach that have, for one reason or another, never been settled, terraformed, or colonized by Imperial forces. Many of these worlds bear the marks of past xenos occupation, while others are little more than dormant rocks, devoid of all life or even geological activity. These are not the typical proto-planets that are found in every stellar system, but instead show signs of artifice and manufacture on a planetary scale. No sound explanation has ever been provided for these worlds, no theories have been put forth by the Magos Siderea of the Calixian Mechanicus, the first Explorators sent through the Warp Gate in the early days of the Achilus Crusade. Other unique stellar bodies, such as the Slinnar Drift star cluster and the Black Reef, are present within the Jericho Reach, providing yet more unanswered questions.

These are the worlds to which the Dead Cabal turn their attention, to which they dispatch the Kill-teams under their command, in their search for answers. Chapter Two of The Outer Reach explores these worlds and phenomena, their past and their present, providing Game Masters with necessary information to build missions and campaigns centered around exploration into the lost and mysterious places in the Jericho Reach. Each world can be used as the setting for any number of Deathwatch missions, and numerous adventure seeds are included to provide GMs with ample fodder for their creativity.

The Lost Worlds (pdf, 4.1 MB)

One such world, the chaos-infested planet Belissar, has been badly contaminated and influenced by the Ruinous Powers. Learn more in the excerpt linked above, and prepare to unravel its Belissar’s terrifying mysteries; The Outer Reach will be available soon!

Do you dare breach its hull and uncover its sanity-shattering secrets?

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Ark of Lost Souls, a supplement for Deathwatch! This unique tome is both a three-part adventure set onboard an infamous Space Hulk, and a Game Master’s guide to Space Hulks in general.

Told over thee gripping chapters, Ark of Lost Souls’ included adventure will take your Kill-team to the brink of both sanity and survival:

Peril on the Horizon—En route to break a siege at a newly-founded Watch Station, the Kill-team is waylaid and met with a terrible fate.

Survival—Stranded and alone, the Kill-team must find their way to salvation, locating unexpected allies along the way.

Darkness at the Core—The Kill-team must overcome the horrors of the Mortis Thule and make their escape, but it may cost more than they are willing to sacrifice.

What’s more, GMs can use the included Space Hulk Generator to create unique adventures set in the forlorn corridors of their own cursed Space Hulks!

A Word from the Developer

For more on Ark of Lost Souls, here’s a brief word from developer Tim Flanders:

One of the most iconic images of the Warhammer 40,000 universe is the Space Hulk. These floating masses of derelict ships, all conglomerated together by the insane energies of the Warp, have been a symbol of 40k for decades. In terms of Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay, a Space Hulk really offers Game Masters an amazing opportunity for creativity in his adventure writing. For that reason, imagine my delight when we decided to make an adventure that took place entirely within the heart of the infamous Space Hulk, Mortis Thule!

Set aboard that drifting wreck, Ark of Lost Souls is the latest adventure supplement for Deathwatch. Players are in for quite a ride aboard the Mortis Thule! Needless to say, I think Game Masters and players, both, will enjoy the missions provided within Ark of Lost Souls, so long as their Battle-Brothers have the resolve to make it out of Mortis Thule with their sanity...

Thanks, Tim! The madness and despair of the Mortis Thule is brought to life in Ark of Lost Souls. Look for it in early 2013, when a Warp Rift is opens in your friendly local game store.

I for one sleep no sounder at night knowing that such warriors guard our Imperium, for my nightmares are haunted all the more by what enemies they watch for." –Lord Sector Marius Hax

The brethren of the Deathwatch are the champions of humanity, the elite of the elite, and the very best the thousand and more Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes can produce. But while many Battle-Brothers are drawn from the most well known Chapters—the Blood Angels, the Space Wolves, the Ultramarines, and others of the First Founding—still more hail from lesser known bodies, the Successors of the great Legions. Some of these Chapters are every bit as famous as their celebrated progenitors, while others are all but unheralded. Nevertheless, all are heroes.

Honour the Chapter, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now on sale via download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com! Honour the Chapter provides a wealth of options for players interested in characters drawn from Chapters created during the Second or subsequent Foundings. This comprehensive tome contains new character creation rules, a wealth of relics unique to each Chapter, and plenty of guidance and adventure seeds for Game Masters.

Epic Heroes

For more on Honour the Chapter, here’s a word from its lead developer, Tim Flanders:

Since the Core Rulebook, we've had a good chance to cover our core of Space Marine Chapters, and with First Founding we were able to bring the remaining progenitor Chapters to the fore. But now, for the first time since the inception of Deathwatch, we will be giving a huge number of the other myriad Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes the attention they deserve. I think players are going to really enjoy the chance to play Battle-Brothers from Chapters throughout the Imperium, each with as much depth as the Chapters we've covered in our past products.

Of course, with all this variety comes a price. Trying to form a Kill-team out of Battle-Brothers from such disparate backgrounds, all with their own histories, combat doctrines, and philosophies is tough work. Thankfully, we've covered that, too! GMs will find Honour the Chapter indispensable for making the most of their campaigns, by highlighting the strengths of their players, their characters, and the relationships between the Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. In this way, they’ll really make their players feel like the epic heroes of the Imperium that they are!

Thanks, Tim! For ten millennia, Space Marines from a thousand chapters have fought and died in the name of the Emperor of Man. When it comes to the Outer Reach however, it’s true, all of it. There really are things sleeping out there in the void ‘twixt the stars. Leave ‘em slumbering friend, leave ‘em slumbering…” –Melkiario Grik

For as long as mankind has sailed the void of the Jericho Reach, it has been a place of danger and mystery. Evil slumbers in the forgotten places between the stars, and only the Deathwatch can stand before it.

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of The Outer Reach, a supplement for Deathwatch! Revealing the secret dangers that lurk in the darkness between the stars, The Outer Reach gives players and GMs never-before-seen access to the enigmatic Dead Cabal, a mysterious circle of warrior-scholars who have devoted their lives to fathoming the unfathomable.

What’s more, this arcane tome presents the lost history of the arrogant and merciless Necrons of the Suhbekhar dynasty, and it offers the latest intelligence regarding their horrifically imminent return. All this, along with details on various Suhbekhar warriors, in-depth looks at the worlds beyond the reach of the Achilus Crusade, and scores of useful plot hooks, makes The Outer Reach an invaluable addition to any Deathwatch library.

Evil Lurks in the Darkness

As war rages throughout the Jericho Reach, the enemies of man grow ever more numerous and daring. But there are evils that lurk within the shadows, malign forces beyond counting and more dangerous than the even the Deathwatch can fathom. Some weave tangled webs of lies and deceit, seeking to make humanity their puppets in the Reach. Others hope to eradicate the teeming masses of mankind, to drive the Imperium from the galaxy, and to return to the dominance they once enjoyed. But whether these dangers be subtle or overt, the only evidence of their existence are the countless unexplained mysteries throughout the Jericho Reach.

Though it falls to the Deathwatch to combat the countless dangers in the darkness, few possess the esoteric knowledge to tread the dead worlds seeded throughout the Reach, instead focusing their attention on aiding the crusade as best they can. Thus, confrontation with these mysterious villains and enigmatic manipulators is left to those dedicated few who seek to drive them from the shadows and into the scouring light of the Emperor. These are the warrior-scholars of the Dead Cabal, and you are invited to join them.

A Word From the Developer

Thanks Tim! In the fourth quarter of 2012, join the Dead Cabal, learn what secrets they keep, and uncover their shrouded history within the Deathwatch!

They will be bright stars in the firmament of battle. Angels of Death whose shining wings bring swift annihilation to the enemies of Man. So shall it be for a thousand times a thousand years, unto the very end of eternity and the extinction of mortal flesh.” –Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines

Honour the Chapter, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now on sale at your local retailer and on our webstore!

For ten millennia, Space Marines from a thousand chapters have fought and died in the name of the Emperor of Man. Pick up your copy of Honour the Chapter from your local retailer today, and take your place among the legends of the Adeptus Astartes!

Today, we’re pleased to present a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of Honour the Chapter by FFG Associate Art Producer Mike Linnemann. Mike agreed to take us through the process of how FFG works with artists to create the perfect art piece for a book like Honour the Chapter. Thanks, Mike!

As Honour the Chapter is mere days away, it’s high time that we gave you a little insight into some art. This type of preview, called a “Sketch to Final,” focuses on a piece of new commissioned artwork and talks about how that piece of art travels from inspirational idea to finalized product. Today, we’ll look at a chapter plate from the upcoming Honour the Chapter supplement.

Initial Planning

Before every RPG book is created, an art director meets with a producer and discusses the art descriptions. Honour the Chapter was produced by Tim Flanders, a Space Wolves loving man who took an incredible amount of time thinking about each image that would be carefully placed within the pages of Honour the Chapter. After going through every image to be created, I went back to the chapter plates and read his art description:

A Space Marine Captain of the Blood Raven’s Chapter leading a squad of Blood Ravens in a charge out of a drop pod. The Captain is wielding a lightning claw and a plasma pistol, the other Blood Ravens are tactical marines with bolters.

I then asked him what motivated him on this particular artwork, to which he replied, “What is something that only Space Marines get to do? The answer is a drop pod assault. What has more impact than several tons of ceramite and plasteel fired from orbit, carrying a squad of Adeptus Astartes warriors into the thick of battle?”

I looked at the list of artists that I could call upon and found that the trusty and talented Matt Bradbury, a British fellow that enjoys working on Space Marines, was available.

The First Sketches

Here is what Matt turned in for his first sketch:

I knew ahead of time that Matt loves to send in semi-final works as sketches. We loved the imposing grandeur of the stance and the slight twinge of arrogance in the Blood Raven’s swagger. What we did not see, and desperately needed, was the scene of Space Marines arriving. They never travel alone, and the team aspect of the Space Marines was not quite exhibited.

I asked for two more fast sketches. Here is the first sketch I received back:

The first image of a Space Marine charging out of a drop pod is mighty cool. It brings movement and action directly into the piece. It even forces your eye to want to turn the page. If you’re a Scott McCloud fan, you’ll notice the concept from Reinventing Comics (his book) of pushing the viewer toward the right, building a “tease” for the next page, whether it involves the story or not. I like the image; it’s interesting, but it opens itself for interpretation. I’m always up for a good homage, but this takes the “marine” coming directly into battle perhaps a bit too close to literal:

Those are United States soldiers storming Normandy, June 6, 1944. I love the conceptual idea of tying brave troops fighting for freedom and Space Marines in the far future beating back Xenos threats, but there is a better way to depict the scene.

The Second Sketch

The second new sketch really showed us a strongly branded image that we wanted. Were any Xenos armies to see that image, they should be rethinking what they’re doing...if they’re able to think, of course. Both new sketches gave us a great insight into what drop pods look like and the impending battle that is immediate, but this one gave the awe inspiring power and the inevitability of fired up Space Marines landing.

This is a Space Marine invasion; bolter char is going to be the only thing remaining on this world.

Here is Matt’s final:

Notice how solid the foreground Space Marine is standing. Notice that there are five Space Marines shown. (They move in groups of five or two groups of five to make ten.) As Space Marines are organized not unlike the military, showing them as they would look in battle was key for us in this image. You’ll also notice that this type of superhero image used quite often in comic books, movie posters, and high school basketball line ups. Why, you ask? Power. It exudes it, and Space Marines relish in it. It brings the truism of “Might is Right” into a depiction that brings forth the physicality and the order that the Codex Astartes demands. We wanted impending doom and wide-eyed emotion. We got it. We wanted to keep viewers looking at this page, no teaser or preview to flip to the next. We got it. We needed to balance the sheer emotive quality with areas of detail to move the eye. We got it.

Did we get what we wanted? Yes, and then some. You really need to see this up close.

Thanks, Mike! Look for this great art, and much more, when Honour the Chapter invades store shelves in just a few days!

In the end, players and GMs may find that where bolter and power sword fail, the righteousness and grim determination of the Adeptus Astartes will carry them to victory.

To learn more, read Lurking Beneath the Surface, our preview of Rising Tempest. I for one sleep no sounder at night knowing that such warriors guard our Imperium, for my nightmares are haunted all the more by what enemies they watch for." –Lord Sector Marius Hax

Last month, we announced the upcoming release of Honour the Chapter, a supplement for Deathwatch. This comprehensive sourcebook provides a wealth of options for players interested in characters drawn from Chapters created during the Second or subsequent Foundings. What’s more, it contains new character creation rules, a wealth of relics unique to each Chapter, and plenty of guidance and adventure seeds for Game Masters!

Unsung heroes

Today, we’re pleased to offer a glimpse at the pages of Honour the Chapter with a preview of the Storm Wardens, one of the most secretive Chapters in the Imperium. Isolated on the gloomy Forbidden World of Sacris, the Storm Wardens adamantly protect their privacy while training in the use of close-quarters weaponry. Indeed, it is in close combat that many of the Storm Wardens’ traditions are most fully expressed, for they are possessed of a fierce sense of pride and believe that honour is to be found in the act of striking an enemy down with one’s own hand.

To this end, the Storm Wardens utilize the fearsome claymore wielded by the clans of Sacris, each Battle-Brother practicing endlessly until he is a master in its use. Only when he is judged worthy is a Battle-Brother formally allowed to wield his claymore on the field of battle, mostly limiting its use to officers and veterans. Many claymores have been passed down through the generations, and some are truly ancient relics forged by the clans of Sacris and later fitted with power field generators to wreath their mighty blades in shimmering, deadly force.

Warriors who have attained the acclaim of their entire Chapter are henceforth known as Tempest Blades, and are grouped together into special veteran squads within the 1st Company. Download today’s preview (pdf, 3.5 MB) to learn more about the Tempest Blades, then look for Honour the Chapter on store shelves later this quarter!

Today we bring death to those who turned from the light of the Emperor and broke faith with their brothers. Today we bring honour to those who came before us as we lay low these traitors! For Vilamus! For Guilliman! For the Emperor!" –Brother-Captain Haeron of the Marines Errant

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Honour the Chapter, a supplement for Deathwatch!

From throughout the Imperium

For more on Honour the Chapter, here’s a word from its lead developer, Tim Flanders:

As the second book I’ve developed for the Deathwatch line, Honour the Chapter was an exciting project for me.

For ten millennia, Space Marines from a thousand chapters have fought and died in the name of the Emperor of Man. Keep checking back as we preview Honour the Chapter in the coming weeks, and late in the second quarter, take your place among the legends of the Adeptus Astartes!
