Zombicide: Survive Together Under a New Banner

Zombicide Joins Fantasy Flight Games

The dead have never stay buried for long, and neither has Zombicide.

Since its explosive debut back in 2012, this cooperative survival phenomenon has carved out an enduring place in the tabletop world, bringing players together to face relentless hordes, impossible odds, and the ever-present question: “who’s opening that door?”

Now, as Zombicide finds a new home at Fantasy Flight Games, we’re taking a moment to celebrate what has made it such a cornerstone of modern board gaming, as well as talk about where it’s headed next.

From its first outing, Zombicide defined itself with a simple premise: a team of survivors working together against an overwhelming tide of undead. And hopefully, having a blast while you’re at it. Zombicide is as well known for its humor as it is for its “survival horror” theme. Survivors aren’t desperate souls clinging to life, they're everyday people reborn as chainsaw-wielding, dual-AK47-toting legends.

It wasn’t just the over-the-top theme that resonated with players; it also has that perfect combination of being easy to learn, but difficult to win, where every turn feels cinematic and epic.

Over the years, the system has evolved and expanded while staying true to its roots. Whether you’re dodging shambling walkers in ruined city streets, braving medieval hordes in a cursed kingdom, or stepping into sci-fi nightmares, Zombicide is remarkably versatile. Each iteration has added new layers while retaining the core identity that players know and love.

Across its many releases, two broad directions have emerged as the outstretched undead arms (or branches) of the game: “modern” and “fantasy.”

The Modern line remains the foundation for the game, the place where it all began and continues to thrive. Here, survivors wield shotguns, Molotov cocktails, and sheer grit to carve a path through urban decay. Tight corridors, abandoned streets, and barricaded markets create an endlessly replayable sandbox, perfect for newcomers and veterans alike.

On the other end of the spectrum lies the Fantasy line, where necromancers raise the dead and dragon bile replaces gasoline. This branch reimagines the system with magic, armor, and monstrous variants, introducing new tactical considerations while delivering the same cooperative intensity.

At its heart, Zombicide is about cooperation and escalation. Actions are precious, coordination is essential, and every decision matters.

Survivors grow stronger as they gain experience, unlocking new abilities just as the undead grow more numerous and dangerous. It’s a constant push-and-pull, a balance between empowerment and peril that ensures no victory feels easy.

And of course, there’s the spectacle. Few games capture the visual impact of a crowded board quite like Zombicide. Miniatures flood the tiles and every scenario tells a story that is as cinematic as it is chaotic.

At Fantasy Flight Games, Zombicide enters its next phase. The goal is simple: preserve what makes Zombicide iconic while making sure new players know how they can step into its world.

For longtime fans, that means continued depth, innovation, and support for the experiences they’ve come to treasure. For those who have yet to face their first spawn card in a dark room, it means clearer entry points, refined systems, and opportunities to discover why this series has become such a staple.

The Modern and Fantasy lines will continue to serve as the foundation for the game. At the same time, there’s room for new ideas, new stories, and new ways to experience the ever-present threat of the undead.

In fact, we are proud to say that on July 29th, Zombicide will launch on Board Game Arena, the world's #1 platform for playing board games online. The platform is browser-based and completely free, so make sure to check out this implementation of Zombicide!

Fantasy Flight Games and Guillotine Games—the original creators of Zombicide—will work together moving forward to ensure that future. What remains unchanged is the spirit of the game: survivors standing shoulder to shoulder, facing down the undead together.

Because in Zombicide, no one survives alone.
