After his earlier articles on painting Dust Tactics heroes Manfred Kreuzer, Rosie Donovan, and Sigrid Von Thaler, guest contributor Nam Nguyen returns this week to complete his series of step-by-step painting guides for the Core Set and Operation “Cyclone” heroes. Today, he offers helpful hints for painting Allied Captain Joseph Brown, better known as Bazooka Joe.

Preparation

Nam uses the following paints, listed here as a reference in the order they are applied:

Step One–Skin

First, I painted the skin on the face and hands. The skin receives a base coat of Tallarn Flesh. Then a one-to-one mix of Tallarn Flesh and Elf Flesh is applied as a mid tone. Be careful to leave the Tallarn Flesh in the recesses.

Pure Elf Flesh is used as an extreme highlight. Next, Ogryn Flesh is used as a wash to blend the colors together. The highest points are highlighted again with Elf Flesh. Fill in the eyes with Misty Grey and color the lips with a one-to-one mix of Elf Flesh and Blushing Rose.

Step Two–Trousers

Bazooka Joe’s pants are given a base coat of Khemri Brown. Then I applied a series of highlights, each using a different ratio of Khemri Brown and Deneb Stone.

The first highlight is three parts Khemri Brown to one part Deneb Stone. They receive a second highlight of one-to-one Khemri Brown and Deneb Stone, then a third highlight featuring a one-to-three mix of Khemri Brown to Deneb Stone. Finally, I applied some extreme highlights with straight Deneb Stone.

S tep Three–Hair

Bazooka Joe’s hair is pretty simple. It receives a base of Scorched Brown, then a wash with Badab Black. Highlights are in Bestial Brown.

Step Four–Jacket

Badab Black is used to wash the uniform, using only the primer green as the basecoat. The basecoat color is reasserted with Camo Olive Green, being careful to leave the shadows between the folds. There are two highlights. The first highlight uses Splinter Strips, and the last is a one-to-one mixture of Splinter Strips and Stained Ivory.

Step Five–Weapon

The steps for the guns also to apply all the metal and browns on the model. The brown receives a basecoat of Bestial Brown while the metal is basecoated with Boltgun Metal. Then, the Boltgun Metal is washed with Badab Black. You’ll give the brown highlights with a one-to-one mix of Bestial Brown and Bleached Bone. The metal is highlighted with Mithril Silver.
