This fall, the Bearded Brave expansion will rally the dwarven banners and bring your BattleLore armies some stalwart support. The bold Iron Dwarves are known for their powerful arbalests, which are deadly when combined with their farseeing optical devices. Today you will be briefed on how these contraptions work in the heat of battle.

Bearded Brave features several Iron Dwarf units to add to your BattleLore games. Many of these dwarves are fresh to the battlefield, ready to breathe new life into the war, while some are familiar unit types come to strengthen the dwarven numbers. Today we will focus on two of these new unit types: the Iron Dwarf Spotters and the Mighty Bolt Thrower.

BattleLore veterans will surely recognize the Iron Dwarf arbalests (known as crossbows in the core set). These powerful ranged weapons benefit from bonus hits on a shield result when fired from a distance, and with a range of three hexes these weapons can easily pick off entire units from across the battlefield.

While these weapons are formidable as they are, Bearded Brave introduces a new unit type that makes them even more dangerous.

Iron Dwarf Spotters come equipped with the Spy Glass, which gives the Spotter an edge when directing his unit’s ballistic attacks. Spotters are unique in that they are not entire units themselves. Instead, a single Spotter figure can be embedded in a single ranged foot unit. When a Spotter is present in a unit, that unit’s ranged weapon attacks receive an additional hex of range and roll an additional combat die. These individuals can turn a unit of Arbalestiers from dangerous to devastating!

Spotters can also wreck havoc on advancing foes when they assist in manning the Mighty Bolt Throwers...

Mighty Bolt Thrower units are made up of two Mighty Bolt Thrower figures and two Iron Dwarf crossbowmen acting as a crew. These monstrosities can fire up to 5 hexes away and also benefit from bonus strikes when making ranged attacks. When supported by a Spotter these machines of war are powerhouses from anywhere on the board. But, be careful! They are vulnerable up close, and each hit they take will eliminate a Bolt Thrower AND a crewman. Keep the enemy at bay!
