Anti-Tank Guns in Days of the Fox

By Corey Konieczka

Any World War II buff knows the important role that anti-tank guns played during the war. As the war progressed, mounted tank weaponry had a difficult time keeping up with increasingly thick armor. Anti-tank guns naturally filled the role of penetrating enemy armor. Since the North African campaign relied so heavily on vehicles, it made the use of AT guns even more important.

Flak 36 88mm AT Gun

The German 88mm AT gun first saw combat during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. It originally served as an anti-aircraft weapon, but its range and firepower soon became infamous among enemy tank crews. In North Africa its tank killing power was proven again against heavily armored tanks such as the British Matilda.

QF 6-Pounder AT Gun

Although known as the M1 57mm gun to Americans, this AT gun was also used extensively by the British forces. While not nearly as powerful as the legendary German 88, it still served an important support role against enemy vehicles.

In Days of the Fox, this unit is included in both green (for the Americans) and tan (for the British).

Using AT Guns

All anti-tank guns in Tide of Iron have the special "Equipment" trait. This trait means that these guns are unmanned and require a squad in the same hex in order to be utilized. AT guns can perform Concentrated Fire, Op Fire, and Advance actions.

Although AT guns are usually stationary, they can be moved by a squad or vehicle in the same hex. AT guns can only move one hex, regardless of terrain, and only if they are moving with a friendly fresh unit.

Another important element to note about AT guns (or any equipment for that matter) is that they can be stolen. If an enemy unit is present in the same hex as a unit with the Equipment trait, then the enemy is allowed to utilize the equipment as if it were his own. There is nothing more exhilarating than stealing your opponent's mighty 88mm AT gun and tearing his own vehicles apart with it!
