A Moogle's Musings

Chapter 1: Magic For All Keybearers, Kupo!

Hiya, kupo! We moogles will try to help you out in your travels. There are bad things, kupo… Dark things that we all need to be ready to fight in the proper way, kupo. I have asked one of our honorary moogles, FFG Robb, to tell you about some of the problems other Keybearers have faced. Be ready, kupo! —MasterMog

Using Magic

Thanks, MM! A big concern recently has been the various uses of Magic Cards outside of the battle action in the Action Phase. Below, I have also included a major change to the way a previous rule was read that has been verified by the game's original designer, Tomy Iijima.

What are the uses of magic within the Challenge Phase?

First, a Magic Card can be used as its text reads. For instance, "Cure" can be used to immediately gain +1 HP. Another use would be to use a Magic Card to directly attack a Dark Card. For instance, you could use "Fire" to attack a Dark Card on your World Card, or to attack a Dark Card on your opponent's World Card. In such a case, the damage on the Dark Card will be removed at the end of the phase if the Dark Card is not eliminated.

Magic Card: "Fire"

Note: Several players have asked what strategies can be employed given this rule. Although there are many combination-specific strategies to employ, three generic uses are readily apparent:

  • Get rid of additional cards for the card draw.
  • Get rid of specific Dark Card(s) on your World Card so you can use your next battle action more efficiently against other targets.
  • Get rid of weak Dark Card(s) on your opponent's World Card to make room for stronger Dark Cards from your hand.

Second, if the Magic Card causes damage, you may take that particular value and add it directly to your Attack Value. For instance, instead of using Fire to attack a Dark Card, you could instead use it to add +4 Attack Value in a challenge. The text limiting the target, in this case, does not matter.

What are the uses of magic within the Action Phase outside of the battle action?

You are certainly allowed to do play Magic Cards outside of the battle action and use them to deal damage to Dark Cards. You can then battle to mop up Dark Cards and then use a move action. This reminder will hopefully allow for you to circumvent particular lockdowns.

Promo Card: "Riku"

Promo Cards

The format of Promo Cards has been called into question since normal their Attack/Support and Magic Values are not displayed on red and blue backgrounds like standard cards. In the case of promos, utilize the top number as the attack/support value and the lower number as the magic value.

Dumbo

Our good friend Dumbo has been the subject of numerous questions of late. There are several facts about Dumbo to keep in mind as you utilize him in your decks. Dumbo's text does not cause damage. It is only an effect. Dumbo's ability would stack if both you and your opponent have him in play (during a challenge for instance). Finally, if Dark Cards are eliminated by Dumbo's ability, this does not cause everyone's favorite elephant to be discarded.

Magic/Friend Card: "Dumbo"

That's all for now! Hopefully these rulings help clarify some of the concerns that have been put forth by members of our great community. As usual, bring any further questions in the Heart Forums.

Thanks for playing!
