I wasn't complaining about the quality of the print.I have printed a lot of the expansion etc.. from talisman island onto stickers and stuck them on cards from a second set of talisman 4ed :/ they are great!
I was looking to aviod printing straight onto card from the printer by hopefully butchering some sort of card game like Magic the gathering but with same size cards as talisman, hopefully with rounded corners. These would then be used as dungeon and timescape cards.
(would be great if they only had logos on the back and no text) I know its a long shot!

Re:homebrew expansion packs

Home made expansion.

I have made my first run of a expansion. some cards based on my creation, others from past boards, or expansions, or other ideas kicked around on the board.

1 lucky winner will receive this expanions.

What I do.

Print out the Fronts of the cards (slightly larger than needed. 101% 102%) on avery full Label sheets.
(best quality print)
Now stick the full sheet to a heavy 100 stock paper.
Trim all cards down to their individual size.
Now print the backs on avery full label sheets to EXACT size needed.
Trim them down to size.
Now attach them to the back of heavy stock paper, that you put the fronts on.
Trim off any access, using the BACK as your reference. not the front.
Using a little slide cutter works great.

Tadah! YOu have your cards.

It is impossible to print exact matches to the original cards. However having them close to the same thickness and size, makes them easy to shuffle in.

Also, for you own expansions, I would highly recomend having a varriety of stuff in it. An equal amout of good cards/bad cards. This way, knowing if its your expasion card, or a original card, realy wont make any difference to try and "dodge" or "get" the card.

(So Rett. Dont make a expasion with ALL CURSED ITEMS, and KILLER FOLLOWERS)

Re:homebrew expansion packs

Since there is a bit of talk about home expansions, especialy the printing of the cards.. But now the question is what do you print? and how much?

Here is my list of a good breakdown of what and how many cards you want in your own creation (or collection) of ideas to make a expansion pack that is not lopsided, or easy to figure out what card comes next (because you can always tell what cards are the originals, and what are not)..Shuffle will never be perfect. I suggest "washing" the cards at the start of the game.

Qty Type Notes
4 EVENTS: Some events affect the drawer, and some affect everyone.
5 MONSTERS: Keep a mix of levels, and remember some are Dragons, some are animals.
2 SPIRITS:
2 STRANGERS: some are temporary, some hang around all game.
2 PLACES: Same as strangers.
5 OBJECTS: Mix a few objects (2), and Magic Objects(3) (talismans not included in total)
3 FOLLOWERS:
2 GOLD: a couple of gold cards..Not nessisarly "bags" but sources. Mabey a Relic worth 4 gold when traded at the city, or something.
.5 TALISMANS: If some other card you created has the potential to give a player a talisman, then I would suggest not putting in a extra talisman card. Do it on your second expansion.

This will give you a pack of 25 to add to your game. You could then theam the whole pack on mabey generaly good stuff to get, for a richer game, or bad stuff for a harder game. Mabey center alot of it around alignment or race..

happy expanding!

Re:homebrew expansion packs

Heh, I just had the epiphany last night that FFG should sell blank cards, and here I find that my idea has been suggested before I could log in! I think that would be great. And doing it the way Hallowknight suggested, I think, where the cards are on a sheet so you could actually use a printer to key in what the card is to say.

I would envision that, at the very least, they could market a "combo pack" of blanks, with say two sheets of blank character cards, 5-10 sheets of blank adventure cards, 2-3 sheets of blank spell cards, and 2 sheets of blank purchase cards. They could also sell sheets of just one type of card separately.

I imagine that the only real downside to this is that, if FFG were to also release card-only expansions, the less-than-moral penny-pincher might have the urge to just buy blank sheets and print the contents of FFG's work on those sheets instead of buying the expansions. To this I'd say:

1. To the extent that I can be regarded as the average consumer, the only way I, personally, would even consider doing something like that is if FFG released say a 30-card expansion that was, universally-agreed upon, 29 dud cards and 1 awesome card. Then, and only then, would I consider printing that one good card.

2. To the extent that anyone is more likely to print their own cards than buy official expansions, the tools are already available to do so. This would just allow FFG to collect some revenue in that process.

Expense.

One thing FFG could include with the blanks, is the software with all the Fonts, and stuff in the right postion, for easy printing. They then could actualy have it higher priced than a expansion pack.

Also regardless of the price, there is a bit difference in "offical" expansions and home made. Cant play a offical tournament of any kind with home expansions.

I would buy both. Regardless of what was more expensive.

So you would still have to print out " one side " and cut them yourself. Ouch if you mess up while printing. Still sounds cool though. I like the files idea where is it all set up to put the paper in and turn it over and it prints on both sides with no surprises. LOL... is that even possible?

LOL... is that even possible?
'Course it's possible. But just to be clear, you really don't want to be printing both sides. That would be a lot of ink, and on glossy sheets a potential mess. Let the sheets come with the backs already complete, so you just need to print the fronts. Software could be included for aligning everything correctly, or simply instructions for how to set it up in Word. Instructions would probably save a few pennies for FFG, and then in turn for us the consumers.

And certainly, a screw-up in printing will waste a complete sheet of cards. There's really no alternative to that. If using Word, it would certainly be possible to print one card on a sheet at a time, thus minimizing the consequences of a screw-up. Or the really low-tech amongst us could just hand-write in the contents of the card, thus avoiding the computer use altogether.

Whilst the idea of FF publishing a do it yourself expansion set maker sounds nice I can't really see it happening in practive. They may possibly do a set of card backs..

What I would like to see, which I think is within the realms of posibility, is some card protectors the right size for Talisman. These not only would protect the original cards (some of mine have already got marks on) but would allow home made cards to be added without them being obvious. They could even be made by an indapendent company as long as they didn't break copyright (e.g. they could just be the right color backs).

Geoff
