Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

Very useful information about card sizes.
Strange Eons makes investigator cards that are 5 in x 7.03 in. (Older versions make cards that are slightly smaller.)

The problem is that people don't post the resolution they have exported the cards at. This is necessary to convert the image (which is measured in dots, or pixels) to the correct physical size. The correct resolution and print size are listed in the readme file included in the .zip archive.

The ideal way to share cards would be to post a preview image along with a link to the .eon file. Then they could be printed at full resolution (and correct size) from the program, as well as used as a basis for further editing.

Anyway, to answer the original question: here are the "correct" sizes for images exported from Strange Eons (allowing for any mistakes I may have made in the arithmetic).

By correct, I mean that I have taken the size of the template image (in pixels) and divided by the resolution (150 DPI). These sizes may be slightly different from the size of actual cards---but they will be very close to the actual size, and they are the sizes that Strange Eons would print the cards at. All measurements are width x height and accurate to 2 decimal places.

Card Type Template Size
(pixels) Print Size
(in) Print Size
(cm)
Investigator 750 x 1055 5.00 x 7.03 12.70 x 17.86
Investigator Marker 192 x 273 1.28 x 1.82 3.25 x 4.62
Ancient One 752 x 1044 5.01 x 6.96 12.73 x 17.68
Investigator card (item, spell, etc.) 241 x 378 1.61 x 2.52 4.08 x 6.40
Ancient One card (mythos, other world encounter, etc.) 336 x 531 2.24 x 3.54 5.69 x 8.99
Herald 1013 x 615 6.75 x 4.10 17.15 x 10.41
Monster 208 x 208 1.39 x 1.39 3.52 x 3.52

Cheers,
Chris
PS Anybody got the combat stats for Children on Yig. There only seems to be one side of the monster.

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

Carcosannoble
First of all, let me say that I like the arts you choose a lot, also for investigators.
Second, it's always a pleasure to me seeing some "serious" custom investigators and heralds/goo (i.e. not "batman" or "mandrake")

About the herald: seems too weak, couldn't you boost the zombies a little? Otherwise they are not a problem to anybody and the all meaning of the herald would be reduced to "add 1 terror for each surge", powerful but mechanically poor. I know that not all heralds appear to be balanced (KiY seems to our group a lot more powerful than the other 2) but trust me, this is a piece of cake compared to others

About Dracula; I love the worshipers and slumbering ability, but I don't like the start of battle: remember that dunwich came with a lot of strong undead monster and, considering that some investigators have only three sanity points. The secondary ability of the attack means that after three or four rounds of combat Dracula will be almost unbeatable (Investigators will be throwing only one or two dices each to prevent him to regenerate). Do you think it would be possible to change in "if at least one investigator fails the check, add a doom token"? Anyway, goo's battle abilities are not supposed to be balanced and Dracula has 13 dooms, so if you feel him to be right, it could be ok.

Geki

Thanks for all of your feedback! Whenever I think up a concept I always look for art that best fits it.

"Murder" Legendre: Well, I played him last night with Dracula, and I didn't think he was too underpowered! How powerful do you think? Servant of Glaaki tough or what?

Dracula: I wanted to convey the terror of Dracula awakening, and the ability seemed to fit, but I see your point. How about: "Start of Battle: All Investigators must Exhaust all of their equipment. They may only refresh one item per Upkeep phase." Changing his battle ability to: "if at least one investigator fails the check, add a doom token" does seem a bit more fair, after all, Dracula can't be at the throat of every investigator at once.

After Bela Lugosi made Dracula, he was hired onto a film called White Zombie. Bela plays the devilish "Murder" Legendre, a plantation owner that uses zombies to operate his mills. Here's a synopsis from IMDB:

Young couple Madeleine and Neil are coaxed by acquaintance Monsieur Beaumont to get married on his Haitian plantation. Beaumont's motives are purely selfish as he makes every attempt to convince the beautiful young girl to run away with him. For help Beaumont turns to the devious Legendre, a man who runs his mill by mind controlling people he has turned into zombies. After Beaumont uses Legendre's zombie potion on Madeleine, he is dissatisfied with her emotionless being and wants her to be changed back. Legendre has no intention of doing this and he drugs Beaumont as well to add to his zombie collection. Meanwhile, grieving 'widower' Neil is convinced by a local priest that Madeleine may still be alive and he seeks her out. Written by Gary Jackson

Excitingly, they used the indoor castle set from Dracula for Legendre's own dilapidated castle.

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

Very cool! I wanted to do these as well but didn't have the time. Be sure to post Pious when you have him, although he was quite a pushover in the game . He should have different effects depending on which one of the three is the AO. I will definitely test these three and tell you how it went.
However, I think it Chattur'gha shouldn't be the one that uses the Terror level; that's more Xel'lotath's domain. So I suggest you switch the Start of Battle effect of the two and give Xel'lotath the ability to increase the Terror Track when a character goes insane (instead of lowering the Maximum Sanity of the investigators). I would also drop Chattur'gha's ability to increase the Terror level for something different.
I like how Ulyaoth works with spells, although his attack should also destroy spells instead of Stamina. His Start of Battle ability should then be that every Investigator without a spell is devoured. I would also change his slumber ability. Spells are already underused, with his ability they won't be used at all. He is Master of the Planes, so perhaps something to do with gates or OWs? How about Investigators may not use Fight to close gates? He is the embodiment of Mind over Matter, so it would fit.
Discarding a spell for failing a Horror check could also be his power, applying to all monsters, not only to Cultists (in addition to the normal horror damage, of course). I think he could even have both powers without being too strong.

When we know how Guardians work, Mantorok should be one, I think.

I also thought about introducing the four artifacts. Perhaps when the AO awakes, and the Investigators have all three artifacts opposed to that AO, they can opt to fight his nemesis instead (Ulyaoth instead of Chattur'gha and so on)? Perhaps you can gain them by using the Tome of Eternal Darkness somehow.
We could create a whole subset of cards centered around the game. Hmmm, so many possibilities...

I translated to my best of knowledge, but mistakes could have slipped in. This especially applies to the Worshippers sections, as I could not always determine if the stats were supposed to add to or replace existing stats, so anyone who can help here, feel free to correct me.

By the way, concerning Cerberus. The "Calle de Centro" mentioned in the text box means Central Street if translated literally. Obviously, there is no such street area in AH, and I don't know which Street was translated that way. I decided to use Downtown because it seemed fitting, but Easttown would perhaps also be appropriate.
small correction on amshiro nerai

Start of battle: [...]discard all items(common, unique, spells), THAT ARE USED IN COMBAT (guess it's referring to weapons and alike)

Attack: the investigators may attack using ONLY their value in Lore or Fight (plus any ally bonus). Then they choose to lose 1 sanity or 1 stamina

BAAL I would prefere SUPREME PRESENCE to FULL PRESENCE

Attack literally goes: Simply, he destroys everything on his passage
1. About the Start of Battle effect: you are right of course, it should refer to combats during the OW encounter. For some reason I thought it referred to the battle against Amshiro, but that would be written under "Attack".
@ mohr: you translated that part quite differently; was that interpretation on your part or did I misunderstand the spanish text?

2. I left out the "only" and the ally bonuses, because both seemed unnecessary. Amshiro has both Immunities, therefore Investigators can't use any weapons or spells anyway, and if I recall correctly, there are no cards other than allies or weapons that add to combat checks. Therefore it seems not like a restriction (therefore no "only") but rather a permit to use Lore instead of Fight.
Unless the text is also meant to exclude bonuses granted by Skills, and the Investigators are supposed to use their printed Fight or Lore value. However, this is open for interpretation.
@ mohr: I read nothing about maximum SAN/maxiumum STA in the original. The same goes for Bullharoz's attack. Am I missing something, or did you modify that on purpose to prevent certain Investigators from being undefeatable?

3. I knew Full Presence sounded stupid but couldn't think of anything else. Thanks for the suggestion, although I think I'll go with mohr's Ultimate Presence.

4. You are right about Baal's attack. I just copied Azathoth's text and then forgot to double-check the actual wording.

@ mohr: I like how you did these, especially how you worded Baal's second slumbering effect. It is much more streamlined that way. I am also happy you already did Bullharoz, because I had problems understanding his first slumbering effect. Are you sure the clues do not count as additional spaces on the doom track while Bullharoz still sleeps? I really thought that was the reason he only had 8 spaces to begin with.
You also used "Strength" in the Worshippers section. This should be Toughness.
By the way, I agree with you about Bremoonar. This will be one of the first I will try out.

I'll soon be back with others I have translated. I have already written a rough outline for most of them, only need to put them into eon. By the way, thanks to Abdul Alhazred for pointing us to the eon files, they will make this go much faster.

Pertaining to the wording I got: All I did was siphon the Spanish wording through a translator for all the GOOs and came up with the exact wording by comparing them with each other. For instance comparing the wording the translator came up with for Bullharoz and Bremoonar; Bullharoz had "maximum" in it and Bremoonar did not.

Also, Bullharoz might only have 8 spaces for Doom counters, but each one is twice as hard to get rid of.
Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

I did a long night session yesterday and managed to finish all of them, including updating the three I already posted. I tried to keep all of them consistent with wording on the official AOs.

Mohr, you were right about maximum Stamina on Bullharoz, but so was I . The spanish versions posted in this thread differ slightly from those in the eon files. I can only assume that those in the files are updated versions, as similar changes have been done on most AOs.

I used mohr's excellent idea of using a die to determine the OW encounter.

Not very dangerous; I see little chance of one of the item decks running out of cards in a normal game.

Here, I disagree with mohr. I think the clue tokens also extend the doom track while Bullharoz is still sleeping.

Interesting; his doom track could fill up real quick if you are not careful.

The same as I posted before, with a bit polishing. With a short doom track and a deadly Start of Battle ability, he has to be defeated fast or not at all. Not that all those Hounds of Tindalos blocking the way to the Asylum will help.

Very unpredictable, and therefore will make for vastly different games, I think.

I am not sure Unfeeling is the best translation for his ability; I am sure someone will tell me a better one. Other than that, he seems okay. The long doom track counters his ability a bit.

Should say Other World, not Outer World ; I'll correct that soon. I think he'll win more often than not, as he'll be gaining a doom token each time the terror track advances in the Mythos Phase.

I don't see him losing due to sealed gates. But my group has a knack for rolling ones in the worst possible moment.

I don't like him very much. If investigators have no special ability, it takes a lot of variability from the game. It will also make some investigators almost useless.

I like her; I think she'll be one of the first I'll try out.

I just realized my wording is a bit ambiguous here; You only have to put 4 monsters on the River Docks, not 4 monsters per investigator. It's hard enough as it is.

I really asked myself if I should post this, because I am absolutely not sure if I got the Attack text right.

I don't know why Nyarlathotep worshippes Manticore, but he seems to do so. Anyway, he is very dangerous; I believe he will take more planning than usual to take down.

His second ability is probably more helpful than harmful, as you will be able to get rid of the really nasty monsters. His first ability amounts to "all shops are closed for the game".

I like his first ability; no weather will help Arkham now. I just realized that his ability would probably be better called "Force of Nature", even if it is farther from the original. I'll mark that down for the next update.

Mohr already put my first thought into words. The second ability refers to a part of the rules that is no longer in effect (put a doom token on the track when the terror level arrives at 10). The spanish version of Scylla adds two dooms instead of one. I decided to drop the "two instead of one" clause and just add one doom. Mohr's interpretation makes for a harder game, but was also one I considered.

"Sigilo" means "Secret", according to my dictionary. However, "Gate Warden" fits the ability much better, so I'll probably adopt that.

I really hope I never meet a tax collector if they look like that. On second thought, it doesn't matter how they look. I just never want to meet one of them.

Strange ability, I'm not sure I like it. Cool picture, though.

I went with Gigantic as ability name. Better than Giant Form, I think, but not by much. However, I like the idea to increase the cost to seal gates by something other than Clues.

As before, I am open to any suggestions and corrections, so feel free to post your opinion.

If my movement ends before I leave, I'm stuck in that location for ever more. If my movement ends after I've moved, I stumble one space onto the street. If I'm on 1 or 2 Stamina, I'm likely to want to go to the Hospital. Allowing me to stumble one space, and then spend my next turn going to the Hospital - that's keeping me out of the game for two (or more) turns, which isn't really that fun. Ending movement when you enter an Aquatic Location doesn't present the same timing complications and feels more like it is a conscious decision on behalf of the player.

One idea might be to flood the Rivertown Streets, Merchant District and Bishops Brook Bridge. This fits thematically (they're are all next to rivers), slows the Investigators down, but doesn't halt them completely.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=41593437

Awesome pic found on ^^

My Design Notes

I wanted to create an Outer God (though I ended up with an Inner God) based of of an awesome graphic I found. What oddly ended up working out was that I saw this Outer God as Buddhist in nature, so that suggested many of this Ancient One's mechanics.

The short background I have created for this picture involves the strange coincidence that Shan were an actual group of Buddhist worshippers (to oversimplify things.) As I envisioned Khun Borom as the creator and the destroyer, meditating in the center of all worlds, time, and dimensions. Originally creating worlds and dimensions with his mind, the strain of creation ignited The Wicker God. Now he meditates to counteract his own destruction, pulling his creations back into his mind, and to counter the designs of Azathoth. This lead me to the concept that Both GOO and the Shan monsters had a connection in their mental addictions.

Also, Azathoth and Khun Borom are diametrically opposite. However, Ghroth is spiraling inward around Khun Borom's creations. When the herald reaches Khun Borom, his meditation will break and he will burn, leaving Azathoth and his followers to continue unmaking all that Khun Borom made.

If investigators win the Final Battle against Khun Borom, they have succeeded in directing his attention elsewhere.

I wanted an ancient one on the hard scale of difficulty compared to the official AOs in the base game. (If desired, he could be made easier by changing his attack to "Any investigator who fails their roll loses 4 sanity," or by allowing a focus of 1.)

The combat modifier is easy to balance the difficulty of the AO's attacks.

The other abilities were chosen to work as a circle when forming strategies against him, forcing players to find a tangent line to walk when confronting him. Most AO's force a particular strategy, and I did not want this one to suggest only one path to victory.

The Wicker God: I wanted to suggest the Wicker Man, which is what the artwork first made me think of, and to me represents the sacrifice of one of his creations to himself in order to maintain the rest. The meditation theme in combination with the absorption theme suggested Focus as a good candidate to base the mechanics around, and as no other GOO has yet made focus important, I felt that absorbing the investigator's focus added flavor and novelty to this GOO.

With focus reduced to 0, Shan add a particular challenge to investigators, but I only wanted them to appear when the flavor was right - like bursting out of a host. While this will make their appearance rare, this still might dissuade an investigator from switching out in order to manipulate focus. I decided to make the terror level raise to reflect the Shan bursting out of other townsfolk besides the investigators and to place a timeline on the switching strategy while eliminating allies for the new investigators.

The Start of Battle rule prevents investigators from ignoring gates, which sometimes happens when the investigators just want the GOO to wake up. Also, it presents an interesting puzzle to investigators with zero focus: Do I sacrifice Will or Luck to enable the closing of gates? Traveling the middle road here may result in R'yleh being uncloseable because of the -3 Gate Check Penalty. Also, with the decision for "monster hunters" between Fight and Will, with Fight allowing them to seal gates more easily, Shan pose a greater threat. Of course, if no investigator retires or is devoured, no Shan appear, but the best laid plans of mice and men...

Magical Immunity tries to counter the "use all high-sanity investigators and ignore horror in combat in order to max Fight and Lore" strategy, since spells will likely be in a high-sanity character's arsenal.

Investigators will have to be solidly in command during the Epic Battle or plan well before resolving the first mythos card in order to defeat this GOO. The early retirement strategy may be viable to bring in some 3 focus investigators if Khun Borom is close to waking up. Clue tokens, the ally that can be discarded to replace the investigator from being devoured, the skill Mythos Lore, and the Changed card are helpful against this ancient one's attacks.

So...what do you think?

So I did some changes on my version of Leviathan and added my first take on his Sinister Plot cards.

And for those that do not mind a spoiler and want to know what the Puzzle Box does.
Click here-> http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/5923/puzzleboxfrontsidepv8.jpg

This GOO is a general tip of the hat to Clive Barker. Barkers' Leviathan is a God of order, not exactly what the GOO picture portrays, but I love that picture . The idea that I want to get into the Sinister Plot cards (but may not be able to due to space constraints) is show that the Box is really the monster, and you don't know it till it is too late.

<EDIT>
Added the new version of Kraken as well.

This guy has a fairly weak attack, similar to Yig. It will, however, eventually become impossible to dodge, and the Sinister Plot cards can make the final battle horribly difficult. I mainly wanted to see the aquatic mechanic used to its fullest.

Well, what do you think? Assistance in balance and anything else is welcome.

Even Yig has more "eyes" and he is far easier to overhelm in the final battle! Also I have to take into account that he has other means of gaining additional doom-token!
If you are using expansions there are a lot of Add-2-Doomtokens-No-Gate-Opens or Seal-Bursts Mythoscards around which make playing against her a little bit too difficult

On the other hand my concerns are more of a personal quirk. I don't like the Win-By-Final-Battle-Option at all, these entities shouldn't be overcome by a bunch of armed strangers. The Combat-deck helps there a lot, but still it feels a little bit "shoody" to face these beings in some kind of direct conflict!

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

I think the final battle with Arwassa would be only slightly harder than against Yig if not the same difficulty. I know that the doom track is so short that a final battle is almost unavoidable, especially with expansions. I was debating between reducing the combat modifier to -3, increasing the starting will check to +0, and/or increasing the doom track to 11. My rationale on the low doom track was that Arwassa seems based on the Dunwich Horror, so it is more like a really tough monster than a GOO. At the same time, its one ability makes it a counterpart to Ithaqua, so a doom track of 11 makes sense. I made her combat rating worse than Yig's because Yig was far too easy to beat in a final battle imho (before Epic Battle cards at least) and I was trying to make a considerably challenging GOO. I especially had a single-investigator game in mind.

Here's an easier version of Arwassa with an 11 doom track:

I made the will check easier because you'll need more time to fight her.

Edit: Here's my first shots at Arwassa's Sinister Plot cards:

And a new one:

First shot at his Sinister Plots:

Twin: When this monster enters play, place another monster with the same name from the monster cup into play with it. That monster enters play even if the Monster Limit has been reached.

Yes, twin triggers for the twin put into play, so if there are three monsters in the cup with the same name, all three are placed simultaneously. No, it does not trigger if a Twin monster is placed in the Outskirts.

My idea for him was based on swarming and how to represent the effects of a swarm. The Ghouls I considered to be a potential aid to the investigators.

For reference:

Next are the sinister plot cards...thanks for the feedback so far!

The Investigators are just trying to force the (greatly weakened) GOO back to its dormant state.

Works for me

Steve

Yes, I agree. The Final Battle as a game mechanic does seem a bit ridiculous. Shooting Cthulhu with a pistol? How about trying to stab Yog with a sword? You HAVE to wrap some kind of thematics around it to make it fit.

I've always thought of it as..."The Stars are Right, here IT comes. But if we can just hold out for a few minutes, the Blood Eclipse will pass, the stars will fall out of alignment, and that thing will get stuck back wherever it came from!"

And with that, I point you to the best contemporary example of an Arkham Horror game...

Ghostbusters, 1984. After fighting all those Monsters in Locations and the Streets, not to mention the "Good Work Undone" Rumor (or "EPA Shuts Off Protection Grid") which they failed, Zuul (and Vins Clortho) the Herald paved the way for the Final Battle against the GOO, Gozer the Traveller (or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man). The boys took their shots, crossed the streams, and removed the last Doom Token, sending Gozer back to wherever.

So maybe weapons CAN have SOME effect on the GOO; ya just got to be a little creative about it. Or insane. I forget which.

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

Here are my thoughts on Lady of Pain after our first play with her last night.

Moving Cultists to the Other Worlds is kind of neat... but generally they are too weak to be much of a threat so they don't provide much of an obstacle for even the mid range fighter type character. I like the idea of moving monsters into the Other World... it just seems to need a boost to make it a little more deadly.

Slumber Effect: Moving the gates around the board is very cool. Definitely the best part about using her in the game. That said, you have to reveal the gates to see what their symbol's are to use this ability... and this does allow the investigators to pick and choose which gates to enter with which investigators. Perhaps all gates should "count as" Moon monsters until they are flipped.

Battle: Simple. Deadly. Not much else to say. Some of the players wished for a little more though. Discarding Gate Tokens to fight her seems very appropriate.

Hope that helps,

Judd

My group has also used the Puzzle Box and Kraken heralds in recent games. Both were highly enjoyed.

Puzzle Box: Players found this very challenging as whoever holds the box basically is driven mad fairly quickly in mid-game... at least if your trying to keep the GOO from waking. Players commented that your almost better just preparing for an early waking and never drawing a madness card to avoid the effects of the box completely. Against GOO with long tracks this might not work too well, but it might still be better than loading up on Madness cards.

Kraken: Played this with Cthulhu as the GOO. Very challenging and lots of fun. We all died horribly but enjoyed the wide spread aquatic effects which actually allowed a pair of aquatic monsters to move and attack... using their aquatic ability.

Our group is already looking forward to trying both of these again with different GOO's this time.
Judd

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

Thanks for the comments!

As for the cultists in gates effect not doing much, I agree. I thought about raising their toughness to two, but I decided against it because:
1. Her cultist ability already does something by removing cultists from what can appear on the board, thus making for a tougher "average" of monsters on the board.
2. Her slumber effect can already be pretty nasty. Having gates in the streets blocking locations off and sucking unwilling investigators into otherworlds is definitely one of the meaner GOO abilities that I've seen.
3. Our group already has an ancient one whose challenge mainly comes from putting big custom monsters in the otherworlds, and I didn't want to copy it too much.

Our group doesn't play with the house rule that gates aren't revealed until an investigator hops in; until about 5 minutes ago, I didn't even know about that variant. Giving them all standard movement as moons would nerf the ability of the +1, -2, and -3 gates too much; one of the most dangerous things about this GOO is R'lyeh sucking in unwilling, unprepared investigators. Sadly, there's not much I can do to rectify this situation without adding a lot of text to that center textbox, and it's already very full. We also don't play with the "choose to not get sucked into a gate" house rule; playing with that would make this GOO much easier.

Battle:
Yeah, admittedly this is an example of me being kind of lazy Our group very rarely actually fights GOOs- we consider it a loss if they wake up at all. Given that instant death against the Lady is true to how she appears in the Planescape universe, and it saved a lot of time trying to come up with something balanced that would never be used, I just gave her an "instant win if she wakes up" condition.

If I did create a battle for her, it would play on the lore of the "mazes"- every investigator would get sucked into some horrible location (R'lyeh, The Abyss, City of the Great Race, or Unknown Kadath) and take an encounter every round, + 1 encounter for every round after the first (i.e., 1 enounter first round, 2 encounters second round, 3 encounters third round etc.), perhaps losing a sanity or stamina for every encounter on top of whatever other horrible things happen. I still have no idea how to balance her combat modifier or resistances, though; since our group never actually fights GOOs, I've got no experience to draw on. Here's the .eon file if you want to modify her to have a battle: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YC5SF9SZ

Cynical,

I hope I didn't come across as too harsh in my comments on the Lady of Pain. My group had a lot of fun playing our game against her and I would highly recommend her to any group looking for a new twist on GOO. The moving gates is very fun and can provide for some added tension when moving through the streets.

Your idea of putting cultists into the Other Worls has also got me thinking of using this in some of my own custom GOO's or Heralds or scenerios. Its a real nice mechanic that offers a lot of potential. Plus as I have been brainstorming for the Lady of Pain's "end game" I've thought of an interesting twist where her attack could involve drawing Gate Cards as if an investigator was in a random Other World each turn. Could be tricky wording it on a card... so we shall see if anything comes of it.

Cheers,

Judd

Re:Custom GOOs and Heralds

You could word the random other-world encounters like this:

"At the start of each round, each investigator rolls a D20 and counts that number of other worlds from the north end of the board, and has an encounter in the resultant otherworld. If the die roll is higher than the total number of other worlds, the investigator is devoured."

Alternatively, you could do 3D6 and have a lookup chart where the numbers that are more likely to get rolled (9, 10, 11, and 12) have harder otherworld locations and the numbers that are less likely get easier locations. Of course, that method is highly expansion dependant.

Also, I thought of a way to do gate movement without revealing:
When a gate is placed on the board, roll a D6.
1-3: nothing happens
4: Put 1 brood token/skill slider/other unused token on the gate
5: Put 2 unused tokens on the gate
6: Put 3 unused tokens on the gate

Gates with 1 token are elusive; gates with 2 tokens are fast; gates with 3 tokens move like -3 gates. When the actual gate is revealed, it moves according to the card.

If the investigator is in another world, the monster is placed on the location containing the gate.
Very, very evil. Is this what you think is easy?
Yeah; our one game against him, this didn't really do much. Generally, if you can beat a monster once, you can beat it again, since you normally get more powerful in combat as the game progresses. Naturally, this may not be true if your group likes buying one-time use items more than the one I play with, but since the group I play with usually avoids those items, it's rare that they can't kill something a second time.

Of course, I've also made him harder since the one time we played him (originally, killing cultists raised the terror level rather than closing gates, and the doom track was longer).

Every time a gate is closed or sealed, the terror level increases.
What is the fluff behind this? Doesn't every gate need to be closed before being sealed?
I'm not quite certain what you mean by "fluff"; do you mean thematic reasons for doing things? If so, there was not much thematic reason for this; I just wanted a good way to make sure that the terror level rose. I figured that if I made his dark necromancy ability happen a minimum of 6 times that someone would roll badly, thus making his ability do something.

A close/seal would be 1 terror level increase. I wanted it to be clear that the terror level would increase if you closed without sealing or if you closed and sealed, since our group tends to see them as different things, although technically I suppose you are correct.

Each investigator is paired with a zombie. Maybe 2 or 3 turns, if you're a poor fighter. Theme-wise, I figured a godlike necromancer would summon a few zombies or something to slow his opponents down.
You have several good ideas (gates more difficult/cultist...fighting monster before the Old One...and monsters coming back to life) but I don't like the ones don't that don't have "theme" behind them and are counterintuitive such as closing gates raising terror level.

I agree the terror level doesn't go up enough in our games. Since many of the special rules have to do with Dark Magick and undead, you might adjust the Cultists to give them Undead status and/or raise the terror level whenever an undead creature is on the board before the Mythos phase (this gives investigators one chance to dispatch them) or whenever an undead creature is re-killed. This way the investigators are torn between killing them to make the gates easier and adding to the terror level.
