For me the easier and more comfortable option during the last couple of years was to play this game by mail actually.

Edit: Also the strategical depthness you get by playing this game by mail can never be matched in a face2face game.

I have seen some posts re: someone GM-ing the game and photoshoping the board at the end of each round to all the players. There doesn't seem to be the PBEM support for this game like there is for TI3 (and others). Wish that there was a something out there like www.speilbyweb.com for this game. I would be definately up for a game if people were interested in getting one going.

If anyone has run one before, please, can you give us tips or how to get started?

I would be fine playing either AGOT or SOS online. I'm familiar with the TI3 wiki, and would be willing to GM the game if necessary.

Current Games

Domination - Mentak
MoOR - Norr
Debt - Xxcha
TechnoRats - Winnu

Well, using the preprepared photoshop files is easiest (well, not entirely. Having a fully automated website is the easiest). You can find these PBEM-files for AGOT/COK/ASOS at http://www.boardgamegeek.com. You will need an admin (who checks his/her mail a lot) to process each move and update the map and other gamedata. Then the admin can either mail the map to the players (I'd recommend mailing it to everyone (even if it's not his/her turn) to maintain game coherence), or post it on a forumsite. Or if you have some programming skills you could also try to build a site like Umbrates did, where most admin tasks are handled by the site itself.

Try to get everyone to mail using consistent subjects (eg AGOT: Lannister march: next Baratheon march) so everyone knows what is going on.

Should the admin also be a player, he must have complete trust of the other players as it's easy for him to cheat (he should make sure never to see other peoples moves before he himself has finished for example).

But the most importent thing is to get all players to commit to two things. One, check your mail at least once a day. Two, finish the game (even if your chance of winning is nonexistent), as these games tend to last long (depending on the enthousiasm of the players).
Currently I'm playing ASOS-PBEM at Umbrates's site and these 4-player games take a month each.

Now, if you haven't been invited by Umbrates I have a small friends-forum which hasn't seen activity lately due to not enough interest . I'll try one last time to spark interest among my friends and if it doesn't work out I'll give you guys a try.

Well, if there is a pbem in the making, and you accept a mail-newby, then I would start to beg for entry ...

Yeah, I am currently not recruiting new players to setup more games and groups.

Maybe I'll be back to that after summer not sure yet.

Maybe a new expansion will revive my interest in pbem community or Martins next book might, if it ever comes out...

I once did that realtime version in C++ but then abandonded it before actually really using it.

I run games for years on a pbem page thats done with a bit of php using sql database to automate just the necessary things so you DONT need a gamemaster to handle certain stuff secretly and noone needs to tinker with the map manually, thats automated as well.

I have seen many a project come and die, mainly because they were planned too sophisticatedly or were not planned at all. My pbem pages work fine and provide just whats it needed to play. No bugs no problems, if someone gets a rule wrong or messes something up pretty obviously, within fair play of participants any such error may be corrected. In a fully automated thing thats hardly possible at all for example.

Anyone in NC by chance? I would love to play again. It's been a while since I've gotten to play. Can anyone help get me to a game?

I ran a PBEM game of AGOT once using no special software. I just made a JPG of the map and after receiving the turns I'd alter the map and send it out. I really don't remember all of the details behind how I handled everything, but it worked.

Anyway, should anyone try to get anything going, put me on the list of interested players.

LIKE = Beowulf, Blue Moon City, Cold War, Descent, Ingenious, Marvel Heroes, Runebound, War of the Ring ; HATE! = Arkham, Warcraft, Warrior Knights, WoW
