“We have…beheld in the ocean, huge waves like mountains rising in the sky, and we have set eyes on barbarian regions far away hidden in a blue transparency of light vapors...”
Master the world with the Fame and Fortune expansion for Sid Meier’s Civilization: The Board Game! With exciting new game options, new map tiles, and components for a fifth player, Fame and Fortune will raise your civilization to remarkable new heights.
Great person cards provide the powerful assistance of great historical figures such as Marco Polo, Hannibal, and a host of others. Investment cards allow you to spend your hard-earned coin to reap lasting benefits. Discover ancient relics, expand your capital into a metropolis, and bolster your cities with temporary fortifications or trade caravans to edge out your rivals. The time has come to guide your people to greatness!
Build Monuments to Stand the Test of Time
“If people only knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”
Monuments to the greatness of your people, wonders are mighty works that tell future generations of a civilization’s achievements. Fame and Fortune introduces nine new Wonder cards, spanning the ancient, medieval, and modern ages. The Great Wall protects your valuable resources from would-be looters, while the Taj Mahal represents a versatile addition to one of your cities. And for fans of cloak-and-dagger tactics, the Kremlin allows players additional intel into the operations of their opponents!
Some leaders may prefer to erect great cities to serve as centers of trade and culture. Fame and Fortune allows a player to expand his capital into a sprawling metropolis. These larger tokens are twice the size of cities, expanding their available outskirts to ten squares. What’s more, metropolis tokens confer an extra combat bonus when defending them, and produce a base of two culture rather than one!
Harness History’s Greatest Places and People
“If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
– Sir Isaac Newton
Even as your civilization constructs its own massive structures and cities, those of past cultures await discovery beneath your very feet.
Three of Fame and Fortune’s new neutral map tiles contain a special square known as a relic – a ruin or object left over from a bygone age. There it waits, buried until the arrival of an army, at which time the relic’s discoverer may make use of its powerful one-time ability! Whether you uncover Atlantis from its watery resting place, climb the mountainside to seek the wisdom of Confucius, or bask in the brilliance of the Seven Cities of Gold, relics will help deliver your people to new found glory.
A civilizations greatest treasures, however, are often its people. Fame and Fortune’s deck of Great Person cards allows a player to recruit the aid of specific great people from history, such as Hannibal, William Shakespeare, or Jacques Cousteau. These noteworthy figures offer potent abilities, but are then generally discarded, fading from public view and into the annals of history.
Guide new Civilizations to Greatness
“Give me the place to stand, and I shall move the earth.”
Fame and Fortune introduces four exciting new civilizations to the race for supremacy. From the bustling and artistically rich metropolises of India to the seafaring explorers of Spain, this expansion broadens the base game’s distinctive cultures, providing unique new play experiences. The Greeks, for example, are rewarded for innovation; when researching an as-of-yet unknown tech, they retain all trade on their dial!
Often called the cradle of civilization, Greece stands apart in world history as a major leader in philosophy, art, and science. In addition to their distinct advantage in technological development, this birthplace of learning produces great people in abundance – each time the Greeks gain a great person, they may choose between the best of two card draws. This, along with their starting use of Democracy, makes Greece a noteworthy contender while accurately reflecting its real-world historical impact.
Invest In Your People’s Future
“Money, says the proverb, makes money. When you have a little, it is often easier to get more. The great difficulty is to get that little.”
– Adam Smith
While new tech cards expand the selection of amazing discoveries awaiting your people, new culture event cards reward them for their artistic developments. With the Agriculture tech card, your capital city will grow into an immense metropolis, and your civilization’s later research into plastics will ensure that your structures continue to spread across the land. Meanwhile, cultural advancements like Nationalism and Patriotism will inspire your armies to greatness!
For players looking for even more ways to benefit their civilizations, Fame and Fortune introduces the investment deck. This engaging mechanic provides more interaction between the economic victory path and the other three victory paths, by allowing players to invest their hard-earned coins in a variety of ways. At the start of the game, each player receives a deck of four investment cards, which represent long-term strategies to which a player must commit significant resources. On each turn, a player may “invest” one coin by placing it on one of his cards. The investment’s ultimate payoff may decide the fate of your civilization, but be careful: Investments do not count toward the 15 coins needed for an economic victory. Is the promise of an ongoing benefit worth the potential setback?
