A Warhammer: Invasion Card of the Week
Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game | Published 04 December 2009

Welcome back to the Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game “card of the week” series. The FFG offices were closed last week for the Thanksgiving holiday, but the savage war between the forces of Order and Destruction never takes a vacation, so we have some catching up to do.

No, that isn’t a spelling error in our article’s title. This week’s article shows how you can add a ferocious bear to your hand, and it features an exciting preview of a card coming your way later this month in the new battle pack, Path of the Zealot! We’ve already mentioned that The Corruption Cycle focuses on the foul influence of Destruction, expanding their ranks with the addition of the vile Skaven... but that doesn’t mean Order is left out in the cold. In fact, you’ll find that they have a few units uniquely positioned to serve as “anti-Skaven.”

The Skaven have a tendency to corrupt themselves in order to increase their usefulness (although we have so far only seen this in Clan Rats, future Skaven units will follow a similar trend). That being said, any opposing unit that can capitalize on that corruption would be a welcome addition to an Order deck. Marius the Righteous, for example, made his debut in last month’s battle pack, The Skavenblight Threat. If your opponent corrupts his Clan Rats to add power to another card, Marius can quickly dispatch the vermin, provided they’re in their owner’s battlefield zone.

Gustav the Bear is an Empire hero who fearlessly seeks out corruption and shows no mercy to his foes. Like Marius, this ravenous beast profits from the corruption of his enemies, but his special ability isn’t limited to one zone. Gustav will be helpful in any zone, since he’ll make your opponents think twice about using Skaven, particularly if they’ve also got a card like Warpstone Excavation in play.

Join us next week for another Warhammer: Invasion card of the week!

Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game is a card game by Eric M. Lang in which 2 players develop their kingdoms and lay waste to their foes. Each side is comprised of either the forces of Order or the forces of Destruction as they seek to extend their empire to include the entire Old World. The Living Card Game format allows players to customize their gaming experience with monthly Battle Pack expansions to the core game.

I wonder..assigning and applying damage are two distinct phases. So, until the opponent has a corrupted unit, he can assign damage to Gustav but it will never be applied right? It means he's immortal until there's a corrupt unit or he's dealt uncancellable damage..or am i wrong?

So how would you ever get past Gustav to damage a Capital, I wonder???

You can't cancel damage that's already applied, that would be remove. So this ability would cancel any new damage taken from any effect while the opponent has a corrupted unit. This card is quite simple, which is what makes it a great card.

Gah, I wasn't going to play Empire but they just seem to be getting better, and its a guy riding a freakin' bear...

Not directly, maybe some day :P

[StoneColdSpider]  There is no "during battlefield", but "all" damage. Tactics and actions included, so also by "assign", "deal", "redirect" etc.

The way I have read "cancellation" of damage, it occurs instantaneously.  This would mean that he "soaks up all damage" when defending against a player who has a corrupted unit.

Of course corruption is largely optional right?  Order cannot actively corrupt a destruction unit, right?

so is it damage already on him or damage during the battifeld phase or what???
this card could have been worded slightly better....

Why? It sounds simple for me.

The card sounds like a rules nightmare.  And you just know it won't be in the FAQ so we'll have to wait another 5-6 months or so before getting an update on him.  Sigh.
