“We were sailing in the southern Cerridor Sea, bound for safe harbor at Garnott where we will train and rest. Just north of the Narrows of Gracor, we spotted a small island in the distance. As we approached, I called for the spyglass to catch a better view... and that’s when I saw it: the biggest lizard I’ve ever laid eyes on! At first I thought it was just the distance, or my eyes playing tricks, but I called Landrec and he too had a look. After some calculations, he confirmed my fears... the beast seems to be at least half the size of the Revenge herself. We’re going aground to investigate, so this may well be my final entry.”
- excerpt from the log of Tahlia, officer on board the Revenge
Welcome to the fourth preview for Sea of Blood, the exciting advanced campaign expansion for Descent: Journeys in the Dark! In the first preview, we looked at an overview of Sea of Blood. In the second, we discussed the differences between Road to Legend (another advanced campaign expansion) and Sea of Blood. And in the last preview, you got a taste of the gripping new ship-to-ship combat mechanics. This time, we’ll introduce you to one of the Overlord’s menacing avatars and two of the new formidable lieutenants! So ready the crew clear all moorings; today, we set sail for adventure!
From his loathsome den beneath the waves in the Sea of Redtyde, Captain Bones schemes and plots. Generations ago, this vile pirate was the scourge of Torue Albes, but he was betrayed and led into a trap by those he trusted. Rather than submitting to arrest, he fought his would-be captors until his dying breath, with which he muttered a final, hateful curse. Now, he has risen from his watery grave to have his revenge... on all life.
The good Captain’s nautical know-how gives him otherworldly power over all ships under his control... and this influence contributes to their wound threshold, speed, and firepower! But what is a captain without his crew? A handful of new and formidable lieutenants bring their terrifying might to Sea of Blood, and the heroes will have their hands full when facing the fearsome Ghost Ship, or the mighty beast that sailors have jokingly named “Sweetheart!”
Glowing like an eerie blue mist, The Ghost Ship rises from the murky depths to drag the Revenge back down with it. Armed with four Hawkeye rune cannons for precise firing, as well as four Dragonfire rune cannons to blanket its foes in destruction, The Ghost Ship needs no crew; its masts, wheel, and other stations move under ghostly power!
Among the rivers and shores of Torue Albes, fishermen and sailors tell tall tales of a massive beast with rows of razor-sharp teeth and a mouth large enough to swallow an orc whole. Some say her name comes from her desire to “hug” everyone she meets, but when Sweetheart catches unwary heroes in her crushing grip, they soon learn that there’s little affection to be found there - although she can only grapple one hero at a time, attacks against that hero are all considered aimed! This, along with and ironlike hide, massive reach, and piercing bite, make this “sweetheart” a costly date.
Check back with us next time as we check out some of the insidious new plots being hatched by the Overlord!
Descent: Journeys in the Dark is a scenario-driven board game that takes a party of adventurers deep into the dungeons of Terrinoth for adventure, treasure, and glory, but beware: the Overlord and his minions stand poised to oppose any heroes foolhardy enough to enter the dungeon. Descent: Sea of Blood takes the game to the next level, introducing campaigns and long-term character development for both the heroes and the Overlord. Cross the dungeon's threshold and step into a world of adventure today!
Not really impressed by this to be honest. Single new thing I've learnt from this is that the Ghost Ship is Any Avatar and the crocodile, sadly, is for the skellington only.
Interesting that one of the 'Any Avatar' Lts will be Gold Level only. To help with scaling I suppose, and perhaps to help Overlords foolish enough to let all their Lts get bumped off early on.
This is looking sweeter with each preview! Looking forward to Sea of Blood for sure!
