As announced at the In Flight Report at Gen Con Indy 2009 (Watch the In Flight video on this page), Fantasy Flight Games has announced that it has acquired the rights to the Tannhäuser game system, formerly published by Take on You, Ltd.

"We're happy to bring this great game into the Fantasy Flight Games family," said John Grams, Senior Vice President for Business Development at FFG. "We have a lot of great ideas for the future of the line, and we know the game's fans will be happy to see more content!"

Tannhäuser is a game of alternate history where The Great War never ended, and features fast, innovative gameplay and pre-painted miniatures, with three competing forces (the Union, the Reich, and the Matriarchy) engaged in combat using a mixture of high-tech weaponry and eldritch horror.

FFG will continue to release new Tannhäuser products, including the upcoming Daedalus expansion, as well as troop packs for the Union and Reich, four new figures, and will publish a Second Edition of the base game, fully compatible with the original release, beginning in late 2009.

Tannhäuser is a squad-based board game for 2-10 players, set in a Uchronic past. WWI has never ended and the forces of the Reich have turned to the oocult. The forces of the Union have delved into alien technology and developed deadly weapons of war. Using the revolutionary path-finding system, Tannhäuser is quick and easy to play.

I just have one questions.

Will the 2nd edition have the same items(Miniatures,Maps,Tokens,Rules, etc.) as the first edition or completely new ones?

I don't have the game yet,so I want to know if I should buy the game now, wait for the 2nd edition,or buy both.

Honestly, a more intuitive & streamlined rulebook and use of character-pack cards like those produced by Universal Head at www.headlesshollow.com instead of the wacky, fiddly token system go a long way to overcoming some of the clunkiness of out-of-the-box Tannhauser.

Additionally, I'm intrigued by adding more factions as well as scenarios pitting three or more factions. While this game scales in so-so fashion to more than two players, it is not substantially conducive to that experience.

And, in the "while we're dreaming" department, I too would be interested in an RPG in this setting, as well as a larger-scale miniature battle game and some novels or graphic novels exploring the atmospheric setting. Heck, I'd settle for permission to write them ;-)

I hope that the acquisition of rights will speed up the production time on character expansions.  I don't mind waiting a year between "big box" setting expansions to a game, but I'd like a character pack a quarter just to increase the variety of choices my friends have as to who they can be as characters.  Additionally, the minis work great in "weird wars" style rpg games and the more the merrier.

I am happy that FFG have taken over the IP and hope expansions will come sooner rather than later. I also think there are some fundamental issues with the game and it would be great if whoever is taking the lead on these at FFG could maybe interact or at least read the comments on the two forums below. I think there is a real opportunity here to freshen up Tannhauser & I always believe it is better to have the pain of change up front than a U turn later on.

This news makes me smile. I've played this over at a friends how and thought . . . awesome game . . . just needs a little work. Now I see that will happen . . . and I also see myself buying this soon after.

I love the game, love the system, and would gladly pay many times its cost for additional maps, figures and mission packs.

Great Move FFG, lets make the most out of this very interesting IP

This is fanatastic news!  This is a great game, and having more timely expansions will help keep it fresh and help it live up to it's potential.

Thanks FFG!  Excellent work!

Figure packs are what I want to get details on ASAP. And I wouldn't mind seeing FFG doing away with the Pathfinder System, to allow players to more easily come up with their own maps and scenarios using tiles from other games such as Doom.

I wonder how innovative FFG finds the Pathfinder LOS rules to be. When I first read of them, I figured it would work fine, but then getting the oh-so-dark gameboard and having difficulty distinguishing the various colors unless under optimal lighting soured me on it. That and the fact that so many of the paths were so obvious being single-wide corridors . But I digress from the news.

Would be nice to see the Daedalus board offered at a nicely low price as a way to say thank you to patient fans and welcome new players in.
