During the winter of 1927-28 officials of the Federal government made a strange and secret investigation of certain conditions in the ancient Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth. The public first learned of it in February, when a vast series of raids and arrests occurred, followed by the deliberate burning and dynamiting - under suitable precautions - of an enormous number of crumbling, worm-eaten, and supposedly empty houses along the abandoned waterfront. Uninquiring souls let this occurrence pass as one of the major clashes in a spasmodic war on liquor.
Keener news-followers, however, wondered at the prodigious number of arrests, the abnormally large force of men used in making them, and the secrecy surrounding the disposal of the prisoners. No trials, or even definite charges were reported; nor were any of the captives seen thereafter in the regular gaols of the nation. There were vague statements about disease and concentration camps, and later about dispersal in various naval and military prisons, but nothing positive ever developed. Innsmouth itself was left almost depopulated, and it is even now only beginning to show signs of a sluggishly revived existence.
The imminent arrival of Innsmouth necessitates a brief foray into the inner workings of this, the most most anticipated of expansions. Promising to be the most challenging yet, Innsmouth offers investigators new options, and new ways to lose their minds.
Many have pondered the fate of Jenny Barnes’ sister, Isabelle. “Several months ago, Jenny was visiting Paris when she received a letter from her sister, Isabelle. In it, Isabelle rambled incoherently, writing about men in dark cloaks following her wherever she went, and of hoofprints in the woods, left by an enormous goat. The outside of the envelope was partially stained with blood, and it was mailed from Arkham. That was the letter from Isabelle she received.
Jenny has since returned to the States, coming to Arkham to find her missing sister. Stepping off the train from Boston into the dark autumn night, she believes that her sister was abducted by a strange cult, and is determined to find her and thwart the plans of those that took her...even if she has to save all of Arkham in the process.”
Well now you get to help Jenny, among others, complete their own personal stories! Jenny in particular is looking for her sister, but other characters get to explore the world a bit more, Wendy Adams searches for her father, Marie Lambeau explores her witch blood, and “Ashcan” Pete redefines the dreams plaguing his sleep.
Each story has a pass and fail option, granting your character new bonuses, or possibly hurting them more in the long run. There are story cards for every character, from every expansion, including the 16 new investigators found in Innsmouth Horror. Do your best to guide your character to their pass, and reap the benefits of a happy ending, or else face the consequences should you fail in your mission...
Arkham Horror is a boardgame of mystery and madness set in Arkham in the 1920's. Players investigate the strange happenings about the town, and race to prevent ancient evil from surfacing. Playable with 1-8 players.
Ho ho ho! They added depth and complexity to an already great game. Love this game. Gotta save the world from the Old Ones, but lemme reunite with my sis first. Wait! Don't let the bus leave!
