The noble heroes of Terrinoth will soon fear to walk into the wild lands once more. Six Descent Lieutenant Packs are now available at your local retailer, offering you the six lieutenants from the Core Set of Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition.
With these Lieutenant Packs, you can replace the lieutenant tokens for Splig, Belthir, Zachareth, Alric Farrow, Merrick Farrow, and Eliza Farrow with detailed plastic figures. Each Lieutenant Pack includes a sculpted figure, a ten-card Plot deck, and an assortment of threat and fortune tokens, opening new avenues of strategic play for heroes and overlord alike.
Servants of Malice
Through the Plot decks, each lieutenant brings their own distinct flavor to a game. At the beginning of a campaign, the overlord chooses to use a Plot deck belonging to a lieutenant. You purchase Plot cards over the course of the campaign by spending threat tokens. These Plot cards are triggered during a quest to punish the heroes with powerful effects, such as Alric Farrow’s Plot card, Dark Champions. As an added danger for the heroes, if a quest does not include the lieutenant associated with your Plot deck, you can summon your lieutenant into the quest as an agent, providing another foe for the heroes to battle. In our first preview, we covered three of the Lieutenant Packs, focusing on Splig, Zachareth, and Sir Alric Farrow. Each lieutenant’s personality is brought to life through the Plot deck, allowing the overlord to focus on different strategies and tricks with each Lieutenant Pack. We introduced Splig, the self-proclaimed King of All Goblins and a true coward at heart. Most of Splig’s Plot cards excel at dodging damage and staying safely out of the heroes’ path. Sir Alric Farrow, on the other hand, faces the heroes in direct combat, and his Plot cards give your master monsters the power they need to defeat the heroes in pitched battle. Meanwhile, Baron Zachareth pursues another method of bringing the heroes to their knees. By attacking the heroes outside of quests and striking from the shadows, Zachareth’s Plot deck easily weakens the heroes, making them easy picking for your monsters during a quest.
The second preview of these Lieutenant Packs introduced the Plot decks corresponding to Belthir, Merrick Farrow, and Eliza Farrow. Although the dragon-hybrid Belthir may be an honorable opponent, he is no less dangerous because of his code of honor. His loyalty to the overlord is reflected by his Plot cards, many of which focus on enhancing your Overlord cards, allowing you to better engineer the heroes’ demise. Merrick Farrow’s Plot deck offers an alternative with a wide array of deadly magical abilities, destroying the heroes with his necromantic power. Finally, the vampiric Eliza Farrow joins Dark monsters with her Plot deck, attacking the heroes relentlessly and wearing them down with her endless thirst for blood.
No matter which lieutenant you use, the heroes will certainly have a hard fight cut out for them. Fortunately for them, they have the benefit of fortune tokens. As we covered in a third preview, when the overlord spends threat tokens during a quest, they are given to the heroes as fortune tokens, which can be spent in a variety of ways. Whether you use one fortune token to reroll a die, or two to take another action, you will even the scales against the power unleashed by the overlord.
