Announcing BattleLore Second Edition
BattleLore Second Edition | Published 14 August 2013

"The day against which this tower was built has come. The Uthuk Y'llan have returned, and it falls to us to break them. To buy the Barons the time they need. The day we all feared has come. But put aside your fear now; this is not the place for it. Terrinoth is the land of steel. There is steel in your hands and steel in your hearts! We will not break before the Uthuk. We will cut them deep, and if our fate is to end in blood, it will be theirs as much as ours!"

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce BattleLore Second Edition! Set in the fantasy realm of Terrinoth, BattleLore Second Edition is a two-player board game focused on squad-based battles between the hardy defenses of the Daqan Lords and the unleashed ferocity of the demon-worshipping Uthuk Y’llan. In every game, you will command armies of fearsome warriors and deadly creatures, leading them against the enemy in an intense game of warfare and military strategy. By seizing victory points from objectives on the battlefield and by eliminating enemy units, a skilled commander can raise his banners as the victor over the borderlands of Terrinoth!

Order Fantastic Creatures Into the Fray

The Daqan Lords hold their walls against the coming storm with noble Citadel Guards and Crimson Archers, but the Uthuk Y’llan barbarians have mustered Blood Harvesters and poisonous Viper Legions to oppose them.

What are the differences between BattleLore Second Edition and the First Edition?

If you've played BattleLore in the past, you may be curious about what has been changed in the new version of the game.

In the first edition of BattleLore, the "Command and Colors" system was central to the game. In BattleLore Second Edition, the command cards remain in an updated form, but the original "color system" has been replaced with individual unit stats. Each unit type now possesses unique stats dictating movement, combat dice, damage capacity, and special abilities. Another difference in BattleLore Second Edition is that you now have the opportunity to choose and deploy a new army at the beginning of every game.

The armies of BattleLore Second Edition stretch beyond the mundane, however, as both factions benefit from the addition of terrifying Elites and Legends. Flesh Ripper demons and creatures even more terrible come to help the Uthuk Y’llan, but the Daqan Lords have the assistance of ancient Rune Golems and warriors riding atop mighty Rocs.

Generate New Scenarios and Armies

In every game of BatteLore Second Edition, you will create a new game board for your armies to battle over. Each scenario cards contains its own distinct goals, and by choosing one, you can decide your opportunities for victory points in addition to the battlefield setup on your side of the board. Combining the scenario cards of both players creates the entire game board and the scenario in which you will engage.

The customizability of BattleLore expands throughout the setup. Not only can you make a new game board every time, you can also specifically select every unit in your army by mustering units from your larger forces. By doing this, you are able to choose which units fit your preferred style of play and are best suited to help you achieve your goals for that game. Once you have chosen your units, they are secretly placed on any of your battlefield setup hexes, and a new game of vicious, back-and-forth battles can begin.

Command Your Troops

At the beginning of each turn in BattleLore, you deliver orders to a section of the battlefield where you have placed your units by using a command card from your hand. In that section of the battlefield, you choose which units you want to move and battle, in keeping with the restrictions put in place by the command card. Because every unit type in the game features its own unique stats for movement and combat, as well as special abilities, the options for tactical maneuvering and placement are almost limitless.

In order to gain victory points in BattleLore Second Edition, you must battle for position over banners placed on the battlefield. For each turn that you hold one of these banners, you receive a set amount of victory points, allowing you to gain more points the longer you hold the banner. This steady flow of points, however, makes that unit a prime target for your opponent’s attacks. Whenever you seize control of a banner, you must be prepared to defend it against the enemy onslaught. In addition to scoring points through banners, you can also score points through personal goals, which are attached to the scenario card you choose during setup.

Battle with Skill and Valor

Whenever you order your units into battle, you roll custom designed dice, dealing damage to your opponent’s units, or gathering lore. Once you have collected enough lore, you can use it to trigger your unit’s special abilities, or store it to rain down spells on your enemies or give inspiring commands to your units using lore cards. As units engage in battle, it pays to position your units well and utilize the terrain. Units can take cover beneath the branches of a forest, or take up a watchful position on a hill, which can have significant impact on any enemy unlucky enough to try and attack. For example, units on top of a hill can fire over the heads of other units, raining their arrows on unlucky enemies. Units within the buildings of a town can ignore the first die that would damage them in a round.

As your units clash and battle, your quest for victory will lead you beyond mortal armies or even fearsome Elites and Legends. Through the use of potent lore cards, players can bring game-changing effects to the table, arming your men with runic blades and enchanted arrows, or summoning the swarm to destroy your foes. Whenever your units fight, you have the opportunity to collect lore, which can be used immediately to power that unit’s special abilities, or stored and used on the powerful lore cards that each faction commands. By strategically casting lore cards, you can finish what your armies on the battlefield started.

As your units maneuver back and forth, attacking and holding victory point banners, you must think tactically, and try to anticipate your opponent’s moves and attacks. With the power of lore as your ally, there’s no limit to what you might achieve as you personally command your armies through their battles in Terrinoth.
