Announcing First Founding, a supplement for Deathwatch
Deathwatch | Published 18 August 2011

“Only when by the power of our hate we have truly shed the prison of our flesh, shall we be judged worthy to stand at the side of the returned Primarch. Every foe I slay, every stone I cast down, makes my hatred purer, and the day Ferrus Manus is restored to us a day closer.”
–Iron Father Klaanu Johar

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of First Founding, a supplement for Deathwatch! The First Founding Legions were crafted by the Emperor himself in the image of his twenty Primarchs. They forged the Imperium in bloody combat as they waged the Great Crusade across the galaxy. Many Space Marines fell to the maligned seduction of Chaos during the Horus Heresy, but those that stayed loyal formed the base from which all Space Marine Chapters would be created. Those Chapters that still hold the loyalist Legions’ names and colours are the oldest and the most revered of all the Adeptus Astartes.

First Founding details the nine Chapters directly formed from the loyalist Space Marines Legions, and includes new rules from solo modes to new advances specialities. Of these nine Chapters, First Founding features the final four Chapters not discussed in previous Deathwatch rulebooks. This exciting supplement includes the background of the nine Traitor Legions and their fall to the seduction of the Ruinous Powers. Additionally, for the first time in Deathwatch, First Founding provides new rules for Battle-Brothers to have followers.

Exploring their heritage

For more on First Founding, here’s a word from Deathwatch’s lead developer:

The Battle-Brothers of the Deathwatch owe their heritage to a myriad of diverse chapters from across the Imperium. Of these chapters, none are more revered than those that owe their namesake to the original Space Marine Legions that fought in the Great Crusade. From the wild Space Wolves of Fenris, to the cold and calculating Iron Hands of Medusa, the chapters of the First Founding have a long and glorious legacy.

Today I’m very excited to announce the latest sourcebook in the Deathwatch line: First Founding. As you may have guessed, First Founding is all about those Space Marines who owe their name to the legendary First Founding Legions. It provides rules for playing as Battle-Brothers from the four First Founding Chapters never before detailed in the Deathwatch line: the Iron Hands, the Raven Guard, the Salamanders, and the White Scars. The book also includes new rules for the other five First Founding Chapters, including some all new chapter-specific Advanced Specialties and Chapter Relics.

As we made this book, we worked to explore the relationships between Battle-Brothers of these different chapters. First Founding contains an entire chapter devoted to the experience of joining the Deathwatch, and serving along Space Marines of all different backgrounds for the first time, helping players to get even more personally involved with their character during his service in the long watch.

Finally, First Founding contains a gripping adventure that sees the Kill-team working alongside forces from three different Space Marine chapters as they fight for the fate of an entire world. As these chapters’ combat philosophies begin to clash, tensions rise, and it is up to the Kill-team to mediate between the chapters and determine the fate of an entire world.

Look for previews in the coming weeks, and prepare for First Founding to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011!

Deathwatch is a roleplaying game in which players take on the roles of the bio-engineered super-soldiers known as Space Marines. United with their battle-brothers, players will complete extraordinary missions involving some of the greatest heroes and deadliest opponents the Warhammer 40,000 universe has to offer.

If you had read the Horus Heresy Books, you would have known that the two unaccounted chapters were destroyed during the Great Crusade by order of the Emperor himself. I couldn't tell you in wich book this is said, but you must forget these traitors of Blood Ravens.

For all we know, The Blood Ravens could very well be one of the two "Unaccounted For" Chapters in the official list of 20 Primarchs....

Actually, I have seen posts on Facebook (and maybe the Space Marine game site, don't remember) from THQ advertising the Deathwatch RPG. They seem to have a good relationship. I would not be surprised to see the Blood Ravens in the RPG.

@ak-47

The movie is still a primarily Games  Workshop initiative thing.  Relic is a much different beast.  Just like you'd likely never see the Storm Lords in their games.  And it's a pretty big presumption that anyone at Relic is even a TT RPG gamer to begin with.  Likely?  Very.  But Deathwatch?  getting harder to say.

Who cares about the Blood Ravens, when you can have the real sons of the Raven - The Raven Guard! They act as true marines should act, they sneak and use stealth and hit-and-run tactics, fighting as much with their brains as their bodies! Only resorting to frontal attacks when nothing else is possible - like all high-IQ imperials should do it!

"In the Dark all men are equals, save those that embrace it." Hail Corax and the God-Emperor!

@Dulahan: Have a look at the DW support section - FFG has acquired the rights to publish stats for Ultramarines the Movie characters. And why not? It's a good promotional thing too. Blood Ravens is certainly not far-fetched and I see no reason why Relic wouldn't go "Official stats? Hell, yeah!" I am sure some of the Relic guys would love to play DW with official Blood Raven NPCs. Probably have even some House Rules already.

It'd be a good promotional thing to see it in the 3rd "season" of DW, sparking up interest of fans.

Of course I am still waiting for Second Foundings and the Crimson Fists (and not the mini-rules from RoB). ;-)

@Dok Martin: You clearly haven't seen the substantial collection of weapons, vehicles, and relics that the Blood Ravens have "acquired" from other chapters and organizations.  They're the dishonorable thieves of the space marines and everyone knows it..  What could be boring about that?

@Mjoellnir

Likely Relic whoever the company is, they licensed it out as a tie in.  It's just a complicated system that I really doubt FFG will ever try to break into.  Just as I doubt the Storm Wardens will ever show up outside of tie-ins to Deathwatch and the other FFG games.

"They're an IP of the Computer Game Company too. Which FFG likely doesn't have the rights to. So I'd honestly wager we'll never see rules for them, IP stuff can really suck like that."

Hm, then who owns the DoW novels? Either way if we would have rules for traitor legions when they were still loyal we could make our own.... But I guess we'll never get that.
