Announcing Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition

Mennara is a world of magic, mystery, and adventure. In the deep places beneath the earth lurk terrifying monsters and foul villains, conspiring to plunge the land into shadow. The darkest parts of the forests hide things better forgotten, and in the mountains gather hordes of savage creatures whose only ambition is bloodshed. And behind all that evil and all that malice lurks the Overlord, the hidden threat that seeks to work his dark design across the realm. Fortunately, Mennara is also a world of heroes. Heroes clever of mind, strong of sword arm, and stout of heart. Heroes in many shapes and sizes, unlikely heroes of many races and creeds and from many walks of life. Heroes like you…

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition! This updated version of the classic board game of dungeon-delving adventure features a host of enhancements, including new heroes and monsters, streamlined rules, a class-based hero system, campaign play, and much more.

New heroes, new monsters... a whole new adventure

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition features eight never-before-seen heroes, ready to face off against nearly forty all-new monsters in nine distinct types. And with Second Edition’s enhanced experience system, you’ll have total control over your character’s growth and development. As you gain more experience throughout the included campaign, you’ll be able to periodically spend it on additional skills, adding to your hero’s available abilities. This, along with an innovative character selection system, lets you experience the dangers of Terrinoth like never before.

Updated rules will have you battling evil in minutes

With a range of enhancements designed to streamline the play experience, Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition delivers a tense, satisfying game with minimal player downtime. Defense dice mitigate the tendency to “math out” attacks, while shorter quests with plenty of natural stopping points mean that even the busiest group can now fit Descent into a varied night of gaming. What’s more, since all necessary statistic, conditions, and effects are listed conveniently on their respective cards, you’ll be able to leave the rulebook in the box!

Your old favorites await

Want to transfer your favorite heroes and monsters from your existing Descent collection? The Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition Conversion Kit includes everything you need.

With Second Edition-compatible cards for every monster and hero ever produced (including promotional heroes!), this convenient conversion kit is an indispensable tool. So whether you want to bring your extensive Descent collection with you on new adventures, or you’ve got a favorite hero that you choose every time, we’ve got you covered.

Visit our Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition website to learn more, and keep checking back as we present previews. Then, in early 2012, prepare to embark on an all-new adventure!

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition is a story-driven board game for 2-5 players that takes a party of adventurers deep into the dungeons of Terrinoth for adventure, treasure, and glory. Players will embark on a campaign of linked quests as they develop characters based on four fantasy archetypes.

Wow! 7 and a half months since last announcement and its still 6 to 8 weeks minimum before the game turns up. I am struggling to see how FFG can view its current no communication policy as the best one in these circumstances.

Personally I'm really looking forward to this new edition. Shorter quests are a good thing imo as so many of my friends don't really enjoy games that take 4 hours to play through. Sure it's fun but it does seem to take a bit too long for games to be run even with all experienced players.

Second, I'm also looking forward to a better organized ruleset (why they couldn't put *all* the rules regarding status effects like poison, stun, etc. in one place is beyond me).

Finally adding more stuff like heroes and monsters is always a safe bet. Looking forward to it.

And like everyone else I, too, wish there was more info on this.

Ok, i get it, someone cast a "curse of the monkey god" on whole FFG staff related to Descent. Because i cannot imagine one thing which can prevent anyone from writing a single sentence like "Sorry, no descent in 1.Q or 2.Q"

That would be much better then this silence and endless hoping :(

I hope ffg will be keeping to their release plan and we will see Desent 2nd in March but I doubt it. I have the feeling desent will be released at the end of this year.

So, as someone who has only just bought 'Descent' (actually still awaiting delivery) I wonder......... Will this conversion kit turn my recent purchase into 2nd edition? Doubtfull..... So if I want to play 2nd edition I'll have to buy 2nd edition AND this conversion kit or probably never get an expansion that'll be compatible. I've been looking into buying "Road to Legend" to give my new purchase some longevity but it's mysteriously unavailable. (out of print and unstocked everywhere) So I guess I just bought a box of plastic miniatures really, until 2nd edition and the expansion are released. Will I buy them.....?? FFG haven't really been a good experience for me so far... we shall have to wait and see.

@ Tashiro:

"The only thing I hope is that in the conversion set, they offer the minis from the earlier edition to go with the conversion cards."

If they did this, what would be left to convert?

Or did you mean you hope they offer them separately? Because that might be pretty cool.

Nnnn..... I don't think I'm really enjoying the GINORMOUS shoulder-pads.... Looks a little too Final Fantasy for me. I also don't think that shorter quests is a very good selling point. This game might be too character-focused, and arbitrary when it comes to abilities - like that other square-based rpg....
