The Wine of Warlocks

Moving on from The Chosen Few, we present this week's card spoiler, again from the upcoming deluxe expansion Queen of Dragons. We chose this week's card because of the ongoing discussions on the subject of creating a House Targaryen draw engine. The main question is whether Queen of Dragons will add more draw capability to the Targaryen arsenal. We offer Shade of the Evening as an example of some new draw possibilities for House Targaryen.

We are cheating a little here: Shade of the Evening is not technically a draw card, it is a search card. In effect, it falls somewhere between a draw card and a search card, in that the net result is that it adds a card to your hand, but you don't have to reveal it. Because it is not a draw card, it is not affected by card effects that reference drawing cards, such as Kings of the Storm's Stannis Baratheon or Kings Landing's The Iron Throne. Of course, Shade of the Evening requires you to win a challenge in order to trigger its response, but that is a small price to pay given the boost of both adding a card to your hand and getting some information about what is in store for you the next time you draw (or what you stand to lose in a Greyjoy milling attack). Other than that, Shade of the Evening fits in nicely alongside other House Targaryen strategies - it is stronger in Summer and it is an attachment (Xaro's Home, Lady Daenerys's Chambers, etc.) - so it is bound to get plenty of play in the months ahead.

Under Siege

Another card that will add to House Targaryen's draw capabilities is Meereen. Meereen again works double duty as a card that plays alongside a developing strategy - Dragon synergy - as well as adding to draw. The main thrust of this card is actually giving one of your Dragons immunity to opponents' triggered effects. The fact that winning the challenge - again, a small price to pay - lets you draw a card for each participating Dragon is an especially enticing bonus. With the Queen of Dragons Daenerys in play, there is not much of a downside to throwing all of your Dragons into a challenge (assuming you are attacking) in order to draw more cards through Meereen. A good Dragon deck has a lot of moving parts that need to come together in order to really work, but if you can get them in line, it can be a formidable enemy.

There's no functional difference between "participating" and "participating in the current challenge." There's nothing besides challenges that a character can participate in, so "in the current challenge" is superfluous.

I'm a little confused at the wording for Meereen they chose to use. Should they not have incorporated it as "Choose one participating character in the current challenge" instead of "Choose one participating character"? Unless they're trying to make it as a way to stop opponents from playing cards on that character, so you tap it to basically negate them.

 

Maybe it's just me. I don't know. But I figured that sort of card would have to be used before any challenges are initiated. Seems it might cause some trouble in terms of using it in random scenarios.

That's suddenly a lot of draw for Targ.  Like how the ability of Shade is thematic/nedly - don't really like or understand why it would be a Targ card though (but then they've done that a lot with Eastern themed cards).

@Gualdo and Saturnine: Do you really think GJ warships are worse than Meereen? This only works with dragons, whereas GJ's locations work with anyone (except the raider-focused effects, and there are still way more raiders than dragons). Moreover, GJ's locations actually help win challenges, whereas Meereen really doesn't. As a Targ player, I'd much prefer a card like LIV for Targ than the above. I'm not saying it's bad...but feels very situational like a lot of their other draw. Shade is really cool, but it does compete with the other great attachments and for 2 gold, I don't think it's an auto-include (even in a summer deck). The net result, I think, is that a Targ deck has to run 10+ draw options to ensure that at least one will work at the right moment. (That's different from Lanni, Stark, or Martell...all of which have *very* reliable forms of draw.)

I hear you, Gualdo! I wish they'd release new Greyjoy box with new cards to boost the House a little instead of reprints we'll be getting (the reprint is also nice, but... you know... ).

This is absolutely fabulous !

Although I fear that may be Shade of the Evening will be too powerful, because it doesn't count into the draw cap.

Meereen's effect is really strong, and it lasts "until the end of the phase", which is really good. At last my Dragons will fly over these pesky Frozen Moat. :)

 I never found a big problem with Targ's draw engine before. I worry that if they get too many bits of good draw... they'll become too powerful.

(Also when is Greyjoy going to be fixed?)

Wow. Shade looks like it is going to get a lot of complaints. Mind you, I haven't played in awhile, so I don't know the metagame, but being able to "draw" cards that don't count towards your draw limit and being non-unique on top of reordering top four cards? Just wow - wow - wow.

Shade has just become one of my favorite cards (at least for Targ). It's like reprinting Samwell from Song of Twilight. It's a nice piece of design work that requires X to get reward Y, and I'm already looking at how to get the best benefit out of this card.

I can't wait for this set to release, because it's really hard to try and design a Targ deck knowing what sweet cards are coming around the corner.
