Announcing the Hand of the King Tournament for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game
A Game of Thrones LCG | Published 24 February 2011

The Hand of the King was the second-most powerful man in the Seven Kingdoms. He spoke with the king's voice, commanded the king's armies, drafted the king's laws. At times he even sat upon the Iron Throne to dispense king's justice, when the king was absent, or sick, or otherwise indisposed. Robert was offering him a responsibility as large as the realm itself.

- A Song of Ice and Fire, Volume I: A Game of Thrones

In celebration of the highly-anticipated premiere of HBO's A Game of Thrones television series, based on the first volume of George R.R. Martin's fantasy epic, A Song of Ice and Fire, Fantasy Flight Games is proud to present the Hand of the King Tournament!

Join us Sunday, April 17th at the Fantasy Flight Games Event Center in Roseville, Minnesota for a day of A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, featuring the Hand of the King tournament, as well as the Chosen Few deckbuilding contest Proxy Tournament.

In addition to our hosted event, we invite interested retailers and gaming groups who cannot make it to Minnesota to host their own Hand of the King tournaments. For more information on The Hand of the King variant and on how to sign up to host an event, read on!

The Hand of the King Variant

The Hand of the King is a rules variant designed by A Game of Thrones: The Card Game's Lead Designer, Nate French. For this variant, you will appoint one of A Game of Thrones' unique characters to be your Hand of the King and your victory will depend not only on your Hand's achievements but on his or her survival. The Hand is one of the most powerful figures in a King's Small Council - choose yours carefully! For the full rules of the Hand of the King variant, download the PDF below.

I am still wondering how a terminal effect is applied to the HotK. As far as I understand, even a terminal effect can only remove a card from play once, yet it would be constant as the HotK doesn't leave play. Discarding gold from the HotK until he is out of play seems like the most intuitive solution, yet I'm not sure how this is supported by the game mechanics/timing structure.

Great questions everyone. Here are some answers:

1) The Hand of the King counts its STR automatically during challenges initiated against it, whether it is kneeling or not, and it does not kneel to do so. It is not considered a "defender" unless it is specifically declared as a defender following the regular rules of the game. If a Hand of the King is declared as a defender during a challenge initiated against it, it does not count its STR twice.

2) If a Hand of the King is in play, and you pay a cost that would remove the Hand of the King from play, a gold token is still discarded from the Hand of the King instead of removing it from play. This will satisfy the cost that would remove the Hand from play.

Also, can the hand use an ability thats cost includes being discarded, instead discarding a coin from itself?

Sounds like a fun variant, but I'd like to make sure I have all the rules down before i start scheming :-)

another question:

In this rules, It said that "An attacked Hand of the King automatically counts its STR during challenges initiated against it". Is the HotK considered defending or not? If it is standing, It must be knelt or not?

@sammy: Great question and one in which we have updated in the rules text PDF. To answer your question: "Any effect that would cause the Hand of the King to leave play or change control instead removes one gold token from it."

Thanks for playing, and we hope you enjoy Hand of the King!

Very interesting rules !

@Saturnine : I guess if the Hand of the King character is affected by a terminal effect (such as burn), it will loose gold tokens until getting out of play (i.e. there are one gold token less than the character printer cost).

At this time, as the character is out of play, the terminal effect does affect it anymore. If it was coming from an attachment (Flame-kissed, for example), then this attachement will be discarded.

Never too late to start Hellfury :D

Definately some interesting rules,  Some really strange decks could be built around it.

That's really neat. I wished I played AGoT.

It's especially cool that this tournament is offered to other venues as well.
