The warhorns sounded and the riders took the ridge, resplendent in their colorful heraldry and shimmering steel. Knights they were, born for battle and eager for glory. In their wake, footmen rallied to their banners and soon the army was on the march. Behind this wall of galloping armor and longswords, none feared the battle beyond.
Set in a world that bridges history and fantasy, BattleLore is board game that puts 2 players in command of a vast array of miniature troops on the battlefields of medieval Europe. Using the easy-to-learn Commands and Colors system, players can wage thrilling battles quickly!
Maybe the issue with the flags is in relation to the Hundred Years War theme. During the Hundred Years War, especially in famous English victories, such as Crecy, Poitiers, and Agincourt, the English primarily used the English longbow to secure victory, while the French used mercenary, Genoese crossbowmen. This may be the rational, but I agree...not every battle we play with BattleLore is meant to be a historical re-creation...give the players the opportunity to field standard camp crossbowmen, too. Would that really have been too hard to do?
Less interesting than rather annoying....I´m glad to have the "Hundred Years War" Expansion, so both sides are able to field arbalestiers - wether human or dwarfen. It´s a real pitty they cut down the production costs by a few lousy cents by not giving the players a full set of flags. If I want to have a bow - heavy side vs arbalestiers, I restrict one side in specialist cards or create an appropriate scenario. But there is no rational reason for not providing complete sets of flags - except of cutting down production costs by a few lousy cents for the price of annoying the fan base. Hope its worth it.
Thank god I have "Hundred Years War"
And concerning the goblin halbardiers and dwarfen bolt throwers - I use "Joker" flags on them.
Interesting that the Arbalestiers have only banners for the Standard camp - and that the Dwarven Arbalestiers also are standard.
The Pennant camp is bow heavy - as are the goblins.
Another race would be awesome! I am loving these expansions - great stuff FFG. Just a ittle clarification re the CtA system and all is well with the world.
I'd really like a dragonmen race of some type myself. And if they do elves or undead I hope they have a more distinctive personality than the usual elves or undead.
With regards to the stickers, I'm guessing that the problem is that the lance banner symbol used in Scottish Wars is too similar to the banner used for regular heavy cavalry (that is, a rearing horseman with a lance vs. with a longsword). The symbol used on the card for the Lancers in the Chivalry rules looks like it's just a lance by itself.
What's with the flaming arrows stuck in the kinght's shield on the cover? This is very cool, but to my knowledge, there are no flaming arrows rules in BattleLore. I think flaming arrows rules would be awesome. Is there a flaming arrows card included with this expansion? That would be awesome.
Seems to be 46 new minis. Not bad.
What I find a little bit boring is the static pose of the arbalestiers, while the pose of the foot knights is great.
Also nice is the focus on medieval lore battles.
But now the basic theme is enough. We have more humans/goblins and dwarfs than we can ever field. The next BL box should be either a new theme (LotR/Warhammer?) or a new race (lizardmen, undead, demons etc.) or both.
Awesome - just ordered Bearded Brave and Horrific Horde - when this hits the shops in Australia I'll be grabbing this as well. The 'Knights' Category of soldiers looks to be interesting - could be some neat units within that category in the future.
Oops, should have said long swordmen instead of lancers.
The red banner knights in Scottish Wars used the standard knight banner (the mounted silhouette with the sword). I'm guessing that FFG wanted to switch them to become lancers according to the new rules so they would need a banner with the horse head. That's my best guess, anyway.
Can one enlighten us about the "enough stickers to replace the current Scottish War banners" line in the rules?
