Relics of the Eagle King 15
A look at Relics in The Highland, an upcoming Talisman Expansion
Talisman | Published 21 April 2010

Over the past several weeks, as we’ve awaited the imminent release of The Highland, we’ve caught glimpses of some of the adventurers preparing to scale the mountain. The clever Alchemist, alluring Vampiress, and hearty Highlander are just a few of the brave heroes competing for power and treasure. But what dangers await them at the summit’s peak?

The Eagle King rules from high atop the Eyrie, watching over his beloved realm. Armed with a number of powerful Relics, he fends off all the invaders that seek to despoil the Highland. However, as the the quest for the Crown of Command draws forth all forms of heroes and villains, the Eagle King’s legendary Relics quickly become coveted weapons, tempting all power-seekers!

Encountering the Eagle King is no easy task. Anyone wishing to dethrone this magical entity must first brave the dangerous Highland. Only those that are able to travel all the way up to the Eyrie without getting knocked back down to the Crags will be able to challenge the Eagle King. And once the challenge is made, get ready for a fight!

Anyone able to best the Eagle King randomly selects one of his four Relics, all of which hold great power. Having control of any of these will greatly help you on your quest for the Crown of Command.

One of these great Relics is the Eagle King’s very mount! Once dismounting the Eagle King, a victorious Crown-seeker has the chance of saddling the legendary Dreadwing.

This enormous raptor is capable of carrying its rider twice as fast as they would normally move. And on a lucky roll, Dreadwing can soar to any space within the same Region!

In addition to speed and vigilance, the Eagle King also protects his realm with powerful weapons. The Windlord Amulet is a powerful magic weapon that can greatly aid its wielder in psychic combat.

These are only two of the Eagle King’s powerful Relics, and even if he is defeated by another character, the powerful magics of the Highland will bring him back at full strength. Any following challengers will have a chance at the Eagle King’s remaining Relics, and a new contender for the Crown of Command will emerge from the Highland!

. . .

Talisman is a classic board game of adventuring through the lands in search of the powerful Crown of Command. Take control of one of 14 different characters from a powerful Troll to a magical Druid, and enter a beloved world of fantasy adventure!

hell, after 13's post i checked the rules, it really is no longer forbidden to use a riding horse in the dungeon, thats a bit powerful, to be honest

12 is right that is a good way how to defy someone whos already on the coc, getting a treasure, i checked those, theres the orb of prophesy, good old prophetess' ability, its mighty

or just getting some instawin item, like the celestial bauble, survive through the dungeon and youre all powerful even at the beginning

someone in our group almost always kicks the lod's butt. the other night my buddy went to the coc via inner region, and could not kill me. i was a good troll w/ lots of money. i got the riding horse and tore through the dungeon 4 times. lol  1st = clockwork owl, 2nd=cloak of feathers, 3rd book of lore, 4th totem staff.  i also had like 15 trophies from not turning in for counters to use w/ the totem staff.  i was saving them because i was already using fate to reroll for lower attack scores so i wouldnt automatically go to coc.

In my opinion reaching CoC space by Dungeon is much easier than by Inner Rerion. There are lots of items which can give much advance in fighting and defeating LoD (like Staff of Mastery or some powerful Spells) and in additon get powerful treasure.  Moreover it is no matter if you defeat LoD +8 or +1 or just by spell - with Cloak of Feathers you can easily reach CoC. If another character is on CoC you can take Wand of Dragonfire or Aegis which makes you almoust unbeatable. If you need spell cycling then you get Book of Lore.  Entering CoC via Inner region do not give you any bonuses. I hope that Highlands will keep the same level like Dungeon.Maybe Tower in the future expansion replace CoC space itself - but not the whole inner region because it will be too hard to explore comparing to alternative ways like Dungeon.

Have to agree with Dam. In the 2nd edition dungeon you didnt have to fight the lord of darkness so it was another possible route for a player to get to the crown, with the 4th edition so far i havent seen anyone even try to beat him, as it takes some strength or craft, that you can already put in use on the portal of power and mines/crypt, so its absolutely useless to take the hard way through the dungeon to get a treasure and, maybe, get to the crown, where you dont need the treasure anyway, when you can easily take the usual way. I think itll be all the same with the highland. doesnt mean i wont buy it though:)

Finally a reason not to hate the Crags!

Now the only issue is trying to fit the three boards (base+dungeon+highlands) on the one table.

I like the concept of Relics, for it moves away from generic addons that can be acquired anywhere, like Treasures being used for Quests. Relics give players a reason to have to go into the Highlands versus just being another way to access the general Treasure deck. It's an excellent notion to make something special that is only available in one realm!

@ Panda: I don't really mind less Treasure/Relics, it's not like I've been seeing a ton of them in play. Actually, I think just once has there been 2 Treasure in a game, normally only one character challenges the Lord of Darkness and even then about once every third game. Would I have minded seeing more? Of course not, that would be silly :D !

Only 4 relics?  Why so many less than in the Dungeon expansion?
