“Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea:
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.”
-The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien
The legendary tale of Bilbo Baggins introduced the world to Middle-earth - the beloved fantasy setting created by visionary author J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit is a novel that tells the tale of a diminutive hero that, with the help of a group of stalwart dwarves, sets off to infiltrate Smaug’s lair in an effort to plunder the dragon’s vast hoard of treasure.
Now it’s your turn to take on the roles of the dwarves, aiding Bilbo in his monumental quest to defy the odds and become a legend...
The Hobbit (an entirely new game, and not to be confused with our previous game of the same title) is a board game of adventure and treasure for 2-5 players. On his quest to the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo Baggins will need assistance and guidance from his stoic dwarf companions. As one of these dwarves, it is your responsibility to aide Bilbo on his journey and ensure that you recover the treasure that is destined for you.
A brand new design by the prolific Reiner Knizia, The Hobbit features elegant gameplay, combining strategic card play with the unpredictability of dice rolling. The objective of the game is to be the player that accumulates the most treasure by the end of the adventure. Treasure is won through Adventure Cards, which are drawn when Bilbo enters an Adventure Space. Adventure Cards present players with a challenge that can be overcome by using the game’s custom dice.
Bilbo’s dwarven companions have three stats that influence their ability to complete Adventures: Cunning, Strength, and Initiative. Cunning allows the player to re-roll dice when resolving Adventure Cards, Strength provides a number of axes to Adventure checks, and finally Initiative determines which player draws the Adventure Card first and how many shields they will contribute to battle.
In order to survive the arduous journey and win treasure, players will need to continually gather supplies and enhance their character’s stats. This is done by guiding Bilbo Baggins along the game board’s path using Dwarf Cards. Each space along Bilbo’s path will either grant players rewards or force them to lose stats. To move Bilbo, players draw from the Event Deck - if a Travel Card is drawn, players bid their Dwarf Cards to determine which space of the path they will encounter. The lowest bidder gets to move Bilbo first, gaining rewards or suffering loses according to the space, followed by the next lowest bidder and so on.
Once Bilbo reaches an Adventure Space, players begin drawing Adventure Cards starting with the player who has the highest Initiative. Adventure Cards present players with various challenges, that are attempted using six-sided dice. Players need to obtain a certain array of symbols between their dice and their character’s stats that correspond to the Adventure Card. If the player meets the requirements, they can claim the amount of treasure listed on the Adventure Card.
Adventures should not be taken lightly, as failing an Adventure Card will result in having to draw a Dragon Tile. These tiles can force the player to lose provisions or stats and advance Smaug closer toward Laketown. If the Smaug miniature makes it to Laketown, the game immediately ends! So make sure your dwarves are prepared for the adventures that await them.
Players may choose to pass on attempting an Adventure, but should only do so sparingly. If all players pass on a given Adventure Card, the dragon Smaug will advance one space toward Laketown.
The Hobbit is an engrossing game that’s great fun for the entire family. Join Bilbo on his journey to the Lonely Mountain and help him become a legend!
Prepare for Adventure
As dwarves accompanying Bilbo Baggins on his journey, players must improve their stats during their journey to prepare themselves for the adventures ahead. Every step of Bilbo’s journey will present players with chances to either increase or lower their stats. Players will want to raise their stats as high as possible before reaching an Adventure Space, where they must face great challenges using the wisdom and experience they have acquired thus far to win treasure.
A Chance for Greatness
The Hobbit uses custom six-sided dice to resolve adventure challenges. Once Bilbo reaches an Adventure Space, players begin drawing Adventure Cards and testing their stats using these dice. While your stats can help you achieve the results you want, in the end you will have to trust that fate plays in your favor.
The Dragon’s Flight
Whenever players collectively fail to complete an Adventure Card, Smaug will descend from the Lonely Mountain and threaten to destroy Laketown. If too many Adventures are failed, Smaug will reach Laketown and end the game prematurely. You might have to work together to complete Adventures or risk being denied a piece of the dragon’s treasure trove.
