Our party has been stranded on Isla Dorada for sixteen days now, and morale remains high despite our constant bickering over the map. Our group cannot split up, though, as the environment is too dangerous. Jenkins insists that we must move the party south through the desert so that we can explore the remains of Wahi-Waha, and he claims that he can secure the Kamels necessary to make the trek. Jenkins is a shrewd and unscrupulous man, however, and I suspect he has ulterior motives. What does he know about Wahi-Waha that the rest of us do not? Besides, I would far rather take the jungle path to Bulo-Mapo... my sources tell me of a golden statue hidden in the cave beneath the waterfall, and I could sell it for a king’s ransom, provided I ever get home.

In the year 1934, the Columbia expedition crash landed on a beautiful and mysterious island called Isla Dorada. A land of parched deserts, lush jungles, and perilous mountains, Isla Dorada is home to an array of marvelous creatures previously unknown to the civilized world. Legend also has it that rare and valuable treasures are hidden across the island, placed in hidden tombs by long-dead inhabitants.

You are among the party of shipwrecked explorers, moving about Isla Dorada and discovering ancient ruins and native villages. Although your party must travel together in order to avoid the perils of the island, each explorer has his own information regarding the whereabouts of valuable artifacts. Control the direction of the expedition to serve your own agenda, and you’ll leave Isla Dorada as the wealthiest explorer!

Designed by Bruno Faidutti (with the help of Alan R Moon, Andrea Angiolino, and Piergiorgio Paglia) Isla Dorada is a board game of strategic bidding and exploration for 3-6 players. Players join together to form an expedition, navigating through a mysterious and treasure-ridden island. However, since each player is competing to be the one explorer to find the most treasure, each has his own treasure maps and his own secret motivations. To move the expedition, players bid cards that allow them to traverse certain terrain. Whoever wins the bid gets to move the expedition... and possibly find treasure!

To begin, the Exploration Marker (which collectively represents all players) is placed at the site of the wrecked blimp that brought your team to the island. Each player is dealt a starting hand of Adventure cards, the “currency” with which to bid for control of the Exploration Marker. By drawing more at the end of your turn, you’ll collect like sets of these cards, and ultimately gain leverage whenever the group bids for movement. Want to move south through the desert? You’ll need to bid the most Kamel cards! Do you instead want to take the mountain pass east? You’d better bring plenty of Yaks!

Based on the winning bid, the Exploration Marker then moves to whichever adjacent location the highest bidder selected. If you have a Treasure card displaying the name of that location, you can cash in your card and collect your points! But beware... over the course of the game, you’ll receive both Treasure cards (representing your agendas) and Curse cards (representing locations you should avoid). If the group travels to a location for which you have a Curse card, you’ll lose points! The result is a tense tug-of-war of bidding and negotiation as you attempt to drag your fellow explorers around the island, whether they want to follow or not.

Treasure hunting is a cutthroat business, and the savvy explorer knows how to use the island’s wildlife, and well as the dark powers of the native inhabitants, to his advantage. In addition to cards used to bid for movement, your adventure cards may also consist of over a dozen special abilities. The Makaks are nimble flying monkeys, and they can be trained to steal adventure cards from other players, while the powerful Juju doll can silence an opponent, preventing him from bidding. The mysterious Samedi can even place a hex on your foes, causing them to draw additional Curse cards!

After the expedition travels sixteen times, rescue arrives and the game ends. Whoever leaves the island having cashed in the most treasure (minus any Curse cards applied) is the winner. For those who can avoid its many perils, Isla Dorada offers untold riches and fame. Sure, you and your fellow explorers could work together and share this treasure trove of wealth... but where’s the fun in that?
