These are my current rankings. As you see they are mostly based on Character flavour than effective winning scores. Just to tell it straight away, in two years I've played about 40 games of Talisman and got only one victory, with the Wizard drawn as a replacement. Since Revised 4th edition has been published I'm the best candidate for 2nd place; first to the Crown and can't win the game in 10-12 rounds of Command Spell, or second to the Crown but unable to win at last (best game was with the Sorceress, when I killed 3 Characters on the Crown and then surrendered to a slow and bulky Knight).

First Choice (Characters I play very comfortable with):

Druid, Sorceress, Swashbuckler, Wizard (W)

Second Choice (Characters I like to play, but not my best):

Dwarf, Ghoul, Merchant, Minstrel

Third Choice (Characters I've felt uncomfortable with, for many different reasons, but mostly because I don't like how you have to play them):

Assassin, Priest, Prophetess, Sage, Thief, Troll, Warrior

Fourth choice (Characters I deem to be difficult to play or substantially weak):

Elf, Monk, Philosopher (must say these are stronger in 2 player games than in bigger games)

Never played:

Amazon, Dark Cultist, Gladiator, Gypsy, Knight

A wizard is never too late. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

Philosopher is good at pissing people off as well (not as well as the Thief though). Just zap away all the faceup Enemies you can't handle to deny others the trophies. Phantom or Fairy hits, remove it before the Evil/Good character gets the benefit. Bought a Mule (or more) at Market, remove it and watch others juggle with the 4 Object limit. Knight/Monk/Priest in the game, I'd definately remove Idol from the Outer Region. Of course, that will see people pissed off at you, so be prepared to run like the wind !

I want to make a wider selection instead of only 3 category's..

First Choice:

Wizard, Druid, Dark Cultist,Philosopher,Gladiator,Swashbuckler, Prophetess

Second Choice:

 Merchant, Knight, Gypsy,

( Assassin(due for overpowered and boring character)

Third Choice:

Minstrel, Sorceress, Monk, Warrior, Thief, Troll, Priest,  Sage,

Fourth Choice:

Dwarf, Amazone

Fifth Choice

Ghoul

PS: some characters from my third choice list can become second choice later

Urgh, the Sorceress keeps getting worse, 0-10 now, with 5 mid-game deaths .

Priest, who replaced her, went just off the wall, his kills included a Giant and 2x Dragons. Kills in battle I might add, none of that Spell crap. Priest ended with Str 15!!! Sadly, against most other characters, this would've seen him march to the Crown and challenge the character there, but the Gladiator with Str 13 + weapon + Gauntlets of Might + 7 Followers (including 2 that also boosted him in battle), yeah, Str 15 wasn't anywhere near enough. And the Gladiator even lost his first batch of Followers (3x Mule and Unicorn) to the Dungeon Keeper. Even though the Gladiator is now 2-3, he has in each game been Crown-ready, twice getting stalled at Dice with Death. It's just SO easy to get him Followers that are normally useless (Guide, Riding Horse, Prince, Princess, etc.) and keep kicking ass in battle. And even if he happens to lose to a Creature, the Followers remain, they only go away if he loses to another character.

Gladiator and Swashbuckler are both starting to get old and fast.

A dirty mind is its own reward.

Don't have the frost march addition yet but the warlock will be a favorite of mine. More reasons to go on a quest!

Velhart, where's Leprechaun?

I'm sorta looking forward to the Necromancer. Back in the day, I like him, mainly due to his art, which was very cool IMO. His 4th edition abilities are (I think):

#1: Start with 2 Spells

#2: Can psychic combat when attacking another char

#3: Spirit won't attack you, though you can attack them

#4: Can take Spirits as Followers, they add Craft to yours in psychic combat

(last two like Minstrel with Animals I think, squinting at the card image on Talisman Island)

Psychic combat being quite rare ability, I like it. With Spirit Follower, you can even challenge the other high Craft people to psychic combat.

I have not add the Leprechaun to the list because i have not get a peek to see the character card.

From what i have seen from the other new characters, i can put them somewhere in my choice list.

Ogre seems similar to theTroll, and Necromancer does me think about the Ghoul..( except he begins with spells)

Warlock seems a very good character to me.

PS: Happy birthday Dam

Old-school Leprechaun (from the Expert Rulebook, so might not be vanilla text):

"Leprechaun – Strength: 2, Craft: 4, Alignment: Good, Start: Forest.

Ability 1: You begin the game with 2 Spells.

Ability 2: You do not need to roll the die in the Forest. However, if you do roll you must accept the outcome of the die roll.

Ability 3: Whenever you roll a 6 for your movement you may Teleport to any other space in the same Region, instead of your normal movement (you may also Teleport into or out of the City, including City Locations). You may only Teleport one space during the Blizzard. You cannot Teleport whilst you are in the Dungeon, Timescape, or Inner Region. It is Illegal to Teleport whilst you are in the City.

Ability 4: You are unaffected by the Siren."

Ability #4 will almost certainly have gone bye-bye, nobody is immune to Siren anymore. Well, except Gypsy (IIRC, Siren is Event).

I don't like the Middle Region start. Without it, he might be okay, as he is, least interesting character in FM.

Hi Dam,

I know what the old Leprechaun does, from the expert book, but i want to see if FFG  has change him or keep him the same as 2th.

I also want to see the art of the leprechaun in full colour..instead of only looking to his miniature..

Reply #26 | Published on 18 September 2009 - 15:08:57

Well, FFG hasn't really messed with the characters that much I don't think. Most of the characters are still pretty much the same chars they were back in the 2nd ed days. Some name changes, little tweaking in the stats, but abilities haven't changed that much IMO.

I have never play with the leprechaun, because 3th don't have one.

If i must put him somewhere in the list, then he will begin with the third choice option i think..

He has no battle abilities and no spell replenish ( only starting with spells..)

I think i must first see him how good he is on the board..

I have once roll 7 times a 6 in a row..

That would be great for the Leprechaun, but it's only effective if there are some interesting cards on the board.

I am also wondering how many fate he will have..

When we play we let players choose their Character instead of random dealing.....I always play dwarf so I'm not too sure about the other Characters.....but I haven't lost with him yet...

That's not fun..( at least for me)

You can better draw 3 characters and then choose one of them.

This keeps the luck factor intact, and you have a little more selection of characters.( if happens if you draw one that you don't like)
