what are the profile points for and how do you get them and use them?

You get them by posting on the forums, but they seemed to have stopped using them.

I thought they were used a couple years ago, at least that is what I heard. I haven't been on these forums long enough to know.

I wish I knew, or at least had some idea how to get points. Maybe you should ask the guy with over 10,000 points. 
I was curious also as I had long forgotten that info. Went all the way back to 11/22/2008 forum thread regarding this (as in last page...) and got the answers...sort of...
Supposedly the points you get go towards monthly prize raffles as follows:
Level 1 Raffle = 25+ points
Level 2 Raffle = 200+ points
Level 3 Raffle = 800+ points
Level 4 Raffle = 1000+ points
Whether these raffles ever happened, I have no idea but I am sure someone at FFG would know.
As for how you earn points, they were keeping it secret but it looks like you get 10 points for registering, 5 points for creating your game library, and 5 points per forum post I believe. I cannot confirm the accuracy, but it seems valid as I have/had 25 points up til now (register, game library, and two previous forum posts = 25 points). Also cannot confirm if points still given, probably see if I get 5 points for this post or not...

FFG did at the start of the "NEW Forms"did play up the point totals,but only 1 raffle was ever held(at least I don't remember ever seeing more).I think that at various point levels FFG was going to open up new content but it all just vanished without a trace.
The Points continue to be assigned but it appears to be meaningless.

Yeah, I think it was some sort of raffle. Not sure how that worked though.
