Maybe I'm wrong and someone should verify this... But as far as I know, Reiner Knizia was riche before he started making games. So he's been able to find the time to create games...
Anyway, apart from a few cases, I don't really think it's possible to make a lot of money by creating games. Maybe by being the boss of FFG, wotc or whatever, but this is another story.

well, it can't be bad.
however, not anyone can make it; and if you're able to create something original and good enough to make you rich, I'd say you deserve it.
