Anyone think this game is worth it .. a $60 game and it uses cardboard standups?

I doubt that it's component quality alone that garners the set price but more so the many many hours of brainstorming, r&d, playtesting, artwork and such. That being said, however, I would have liked to see minis at least for the heroes…
Pax Magnifica Bellum Gloriosum
From what little I've seen of it I would disagree. Sure it seems to share a couple of mechanics (monster movement along arrows for example) and it's also a coop game. But I would probably say it seems to be more towards "Return of the Heroes" from Pegasus Spiele even if that's a competitive title.

The author of the game is an illustrator at the most games. I'm pretty sure he likes his painted figures more than any miniatures.

The board and other components look very nice from what I can see. Just buy Defenders of the Realm and use their hero figures, if the cardboard standups bother you.
