I recently picked up the x-wing miniatures game and I wanted to get a playmat. I want to kill two birds with one stone and would like to get one that would suit this as well. Unfortunately I do not have my book on me. Is the space movement a square grid, hexes, or free form?

Space movement is free-form, using range bands akin to character-scale movement. No map, no grid, just mind's eye theatre.
