Game Day!!!
Published on 16 June 2012 - 17:44:32

So how was Free RPG Day examining Only War and playing it?  Is it similar to BC or the DH character system?  Was it all follow someone else's orders or did you get to choose your own?  And, not least of all, how was the visit to Free RPG Day?  (Never been to one, but would love to go BTW)

It's DH power levels with BC weapon rules.

We had the Ratling, Commissar, Specialist, Heavy, and Enginseer.

The Ratling sniper is a beast. I, having played the Ratling, was the kill count for the squad. The Commissar, the heavy, and the specialist were a distant second, with the Enginseer doing more damage to the squad with botched medicae rolls than the enemy did. We learned why he became an Engineseer. Eventually the specialist and I figured out we were a good double team. I would hit for big damage, he would charge in and clean up.

Overall a good time.

Yeah, the Ratling was a beast.:) I ran it twice today, and both Play throughs went really well. The Ratling and Ogryn accounted for most of the kills. Weapons Specialist in both games did minimal in combat, but was superb out of combat. Everyone in both games found their niche, which was sweet. I was relieved to have two groups who played really heroically.

I'm really looking forward to this coming out in full.

Wonder if it's going to be a class system or archetype with free form picking talents/skills.  I hope it's more of a class system.

I hope its something like DW style with Regiment advances, Guardsmen Advances and Class advances.

Seeing as it uses the term "Specialities" and it has a similar theme to Deathwatch, I would guess it will indeed use that structure.

DH with BC rules, fuck it, I'm sold.

The fact there's offical Ratlings and Ogryns is just cool as they've been missing in 40K RPG's for a very long time.

If in doubt, shoot it

I agree who heartedly.    If nothing, I'm getting the books so I can implement Ogryns and Ratlings into DH or RT.  Alas, I don't own BC yet.
