Flight from Moria (Solo Player Living Tournament)

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking!

Scenario: Flight from Moria
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success.

1 Core Set, all expansions + KD were used.

Just started to play this quest  - and I have to say I am pretty much underhwelmed. I thought this was supposed to be the toughest KD scenario, but as it turns out it is laughable easy. Or I am playing this wrong. I lost one single game so far (my first), but only because I chose to discard an encounter card when i flipped "Blocked by Shadow" as the first 2B quest card. Now I know I will never do this again.

I didn't even change my deck. I guess Dwalin might be more useful than Thalin in this scenario, so I poribably will abandon the tactics sphere and replace it by spirit.

Juicy, pelase cancel my results. I made a serious rule error as I didn't realize that only the Abandoned Tools can place progress tokens on "Escape from the Darkness". Sorry!

I managed to get the Blocked by Shadow quest card in all 3 games. The first two games, I just took my chance. In the third one, I knew what was on top from Henamarth peeking the previous turn. Once that quest was out, it was a simple matter of pitching my hand in Protector of Lorien. I could actualy have one a turn earlier on game 3, but I didn't quest with Bilbo (he was my target for Protector of Lorien) the turn the card was revealed as I was engaged with some Goblin.

I thought a Fast Hitch Bilbo would work wonders with the Tools, but I just never managed to get them in any of the games.

Second set proved to be a good one. Game one was normal. Got the tools and completed the quest in round 6.

Thes second game was a perfect start with the tools search card being the first card. Finished in round 3.

The last one was the one where I gambled. I got the search for tools quest card. The encounter was a card that let me take another quest card. I was disapointed first.....but then the Blocked by Shadow cam up and I took my chances. A Great Cave Troll came up.Lucky.

First I have an important message:

Don't play FfM with The Twins!

They royally suck at finding a way out of Moria. I won my first game with an amazing result, but lost the next 15 or so games in a row. Ouch!

That's why I put the Dwarves back in charge. And they did not disappoint me. I played six games and won them all. Here is the best cycle so far:

Heroes: Dwalin, Dáin Ironfoot, Bifur

Game 1 Result: 50
Final Threat Level: 30
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 3
Victory Points Earned: 2
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Game 2 Result: 54
Final Threat Level: 16
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 1
Victory Points Earned: 3
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Game 3 Result: 59
Final Threat Level: 30
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 3
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Total score: 54,33

1 Core Set, all expansions until Road to Rivendell were used.

After having a 80 precent ratio of drawing treacheries when choosing Blocked by Shadow, the encounter deck eventually payed its debt in game 2. I had two Gandalfs and two Sneak Attacks in my starting hand and also an Erebor Record Keeper. Setup: Abandoned Tools + Undisturbed Bones! Thanks to the Record Keeper I made my way through Escape from Darkness quickly. Gandalf lowered my threat 3 times (one Gandalf fell into the Fouled Well) and helped Dwalin to defeat the Chieftain of the Pit to lower my threat even more.

In game 3 I had to get through a Wrong Turn and Heading Down. In round 3 I got The Mountain's Root which I put back on the top of the encounter deck to 1) get en easy encounter again or 2) being able to travel safely through Blocked by Shadow. The latter was drawn in round 3 and after one more round my Dwarves found the exit.

Ok, I think I made a mistake when scoring my second game. Since Abandoned Tool's refresh action can only be taken after adding one point to a player's threat, my threat should be 17 instead of 16. I don't think I have to raise my number of rounds played, as I finished the game before the end of the refresh phase.

Right?

Taken from the FAQ:

Players tally each round for their
score at the end of the refresh phase.

So, if you win the game before the end of the refresh phase, you do not need to add that round to your total.

Congrats on your results!

Thanks, I think I deserved these results after my first series of painful losses. Regarding the scoring, that's how I read it, too. It's unusual though to raise my threat without adding another round. I also wasn't aware that there is no action window in the refresh phase before the threat is raised.

So, here is the corrected result:

Heroes: Dwalin, Dáin Ironfoot, Bifur

Game 1 Result: 50
Final Threat Level: 30
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 3
Victory Points Earned: 2
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Game 2 Result: 55
Final Threat Level: 17
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 1
Victory Points Earned: 3
Number of Rounds Completed: 4

Game 3 Result: 59
Final Threat Level: 30
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 0
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 3
Number of Rounds Completed: 3

Total score: 54,67

This was easier that I thought. I have read in the Forum that this quest was easier solo than multiplayer, and it seems true. I had some troubles the second game with A Foe Beyond, that killed Bifur, but it was late in the game and could win without troubles anyway.

Heroes:

Game 1 Result: LOSS

Game 2 Result: LOSS

Game 3 Result: 126
Final Threat Level: 43
Threat Cost of Each Dead Hero: 11 + 12 (Boromir and Aragorn)
Damage Tokens on Remaining Heroes: 2
Victory Points Earned: 2
Number of Rounds Completed: 6

Final weighted result: 126*3 = 378

In the first game, the shadow effect of Chieftain of the Pit made the Great Cave-Troll attack twice, forcing me to sacrifice Beravor. The very same combat phase the shadow effect from Sudden Pitfall killed Boromir aswell, and from there it went downhill very quickly. Second game: Things were starting to look pretty bad after a few rounds (7 victory points + 2 locations in play) so when Blocked by Shadow came up I once again decided to risk it! Didn't turn out so great.

The final game was a lot more fun. Chieftain of the Pit killed Boromir in the fifth round and I was also engaged with a Great Cave-Troll and a Goblin Spearman who were tearing through my allies. Just as I thought that it was game over, Blocked by Shadow turned up and I passed the discard test. Unfortunately, Dark and Dreadful killed Aragorn (who had my Protector of Lorien and was my main quester) so no progress that round. My last two allies were killed the following combat phase and I knew I had to win with only Beravor the next round. I drew a card, and it was Protector of Lorien! Beravor quested alone and with the help of 13 discarded cards, was able to pull through and place the 9 progress needed for the win
