Conflict at the Carrock (Solo Player Living Tournament)

This tournament is part of the Living Tournament system. You are welcome to read this, play the scenario, and post your results (in that order). Place well enough, and you may just end up with a Living Tournament World Ranking!

Scenario: Conflict at the Carrock
Deck Parameters: Open Build*
Number of Players: Solo Player

Tournament Parameters:

1) This is a Living Tournament. You may play and post results at your own pace.
2) *Open Build means you may use any legal LOTR LCG cards at your availability.
3) A valid result in this tournament consists of reporting your results (wins and losses) from 3 back-to-back games (may be spread out over as much time as you like), using the same deck for each of those 3 games. (Please observe the mulligan rule, and all other rules, from the LOTR LCG rulebook and subsequent official FAQ documents.)
4) After you post your results, the results from your 3 games will be calibrated using the RGun formula** to obtain your Weighted Result.
5) Weighted Results will then be ranked against other player’s Weighted Results, and the rankings will be updated over time as new results are posted to the thread.
6) You may play this tournament as many times as you would like (so you can try out different deck builds over time), but you can only hold one spot in the overall tournament rankings at a time (i.e. this gives you a chance to try and best your own result while only occupying one spot in the rankings).
7) Do not cheat. Just don’t. It destroys the fun and integrity of the tournament system. If you realize you have made a mistake at a later date that had serious implications for a result you had posted in the past, please make a new post in this thread drawing attention to that fact – that past result will be invalidated, and of course, you are welcome (and highly encouraged) to try again.

**The RGun formula has been designed to value both Final Score (per game) and overall Win Ratio (from your 3 games, cumulative). The formula is: (Average Score of Games Won) x (Total Games Played/Games Won). For an expanded discussion on how this formula was created, you can read the thread called Measuring Success.

I made my deck a four sphere deck. As the tactic cards are mainly used for the fight against the trolls, getting Song of Battle in time is not a real problem. The main strategy is, of course, to get my threat under 20 ASAP to play all the secrecy cards and to be in a good shape when the Fearsome Foursome arrive at the Carrock. I played four games so far and in every one I managed to follow that strategy. Other important keys are to play Dwarrodwelf Axe on Veteran Axehand, to have at least one Hail of Stones in my hand to kill the last troll (Louis) without engaging him and to have enough attacking power to fell a troll in a single turn. Without Beorn that's hard to achieve, so in most games I started the battle once Beorn was found and payed for.

I will try one other game to improve this result, then I will try another cycle with Grim Resolve in my hand. That plus 2x Hail of Stones should result in a funny massacre. And who does not enjoy the imaginary picture of their fellowship burying a troll with a hail of stones*?

* of course Rivendell Minstrells will throw their instruments instead

Lure of Moria (RtR) x2
Needful to Know (TRG) x3
Out of the Wild (RtR) x2
Sneak Attack (Core) x3
Timely Aid (TRG) x3

Finally got around to try a "serious" secrecy deck. It worked nice. The first game took me longer as I was so careful. But when I realized I needed 4 turns just to kill the Trolls (since I can't engage more than one per turn), it was too late. I won the third game without even getting Grimbeorn (and he died to a shadow Despair in game 2).

The key card remains Steward of Gondor (until Resourceful becomes available). After that, Sneak Attack + Gandalf and Timely Aid make the deck work. I went with 1 of for most of the unique character as I don't play Protector of Lorien and I didn't want to be stuck with "useless" cards in hand. Snowbourn Scout are there to serve as Troll fodder in case Grimbeorn isn't there to defend.

The only change I'd make is remove the Celebrian's Stone (an additional Erebor Record Keeper would give the same result) and maybe the Out of the Wild. There aren't that many cards in this quest that will destroy you outright... I used it to remove enemies most of the time.

Only other thing of note is that I lost a turn on game 1 when the last Troll revealed Misty Mountain Goblins as its shadow cards... had I thought about this possibility, I would have ensured there were more than 1 progress on the quest (I had extra characters I didn't use and I had scryed with Henamarth before questing).

Anyway, the result isn't too bad and it'd probably increase if I were to keep playing. But I'll move to the other scenarios (I'll work on Escape from Dol Guldur now... getting 2 wins out of 3 would be nice) first.

2 Core sets and everything else but watcher in the water.

Game 1:  Dunhere with 3 dunedain marks early in the game, and some Gandalf sneak attacks helped move this game along quickly.
Game 2 and 3.  I had to resort to a tanking style of play, since I did not have sufficient attack stength to attack the trolls in the staging area with dunhere. Henemarth Riversong helped me gauge just how may players to commit to a quest so I would not release the trolls to the staging area.  I generated an army large enough, with the help of Grimberon, to take them down one by one by intentionally engaging one of them each round.

I was a bit hesitant not to have eowyn, but I did not need her since I made up for it with questing allies. This scenario is not heavy in staging area threat until the trolls come in, but by then I had enough allies and attachments to handle it.

I observed the tournament with CatC and read the long chat concerning the validity of muemakan's deck (not trying to start any continued wars or accusations here).  I was very intrigued with the concept and result and tried it out for myself by using his heroes and trying to find the right cards to fill the deck based on his strategy.  I only have one core set though, so I obviously could not get anywhere near as good of a result if I wanted to, but I tried my best.  I'm really happy with the result and I can kind of see how good the deck could be if I had three core sets.

I give all credits for this score to muemakan, whose deck and tactics I basically copied (insofar as I knew them); Horn of Gondor + Sneak Attacked Gandalf + Unexpected Courage x3 on Beravor - it works. Have to say it does feel more like breaking the game than going on an epic adventure. ;-P

Not to forget Will of the West, without which the combo doesn't work. And SoG, Common Cause, Grim Resolve, the Songs, For Gondor!… it's one heck of a deck…
