My guess would be that with the smaller dungeon levels it would serve the game better to have fewer monsters, fewer monsters mean monsters that can take more of a beating. The changes the power dice and the improvement (IMO) of the surge system also allows for a more balanced playing experience.

1) The improved surge system, limiting the amount of surged used on cards/abilities is a great improvement. I just recently played a game in the Tomb of Ice expac and the 2-handed hammer from base equipment destroyed anything the tank came up too since any/all surges were pumped into damage.

2) Don't forget, since the O.L. no longer spawns monsters on his own, his card focuses are sure to either be trap/monster buffs/hero debuffs.

3) I never got a chance to play Alter of Despair, Road to Legends, or Sea of blood. So as far as I'm concerned, there has never been a true healing class unless players were lucky enough to find healing runes in treasure chests. (I'm sure someone could fill in this dead space of info for me)

There was a healing bird familiar in Altar of Despair (skill).

@Columbob

So allegedly, there was never any true healer for D1e. I'm guessing that even though D2e is "shorter" in time, it'll probably be just as hard to progress through the game as it was initially in D1e. Especially since the addition of healing classes.

Also, on a side note, if anyone ever looked at the "Create a Hero" rules set out by FFG, you could make a "healer" with the one skill provided in the building rules to let people heal each time runes were flipped but that was far and few as well.

I think a couple of heroes might have had a sort of healing special ability as well, can't think of it off the top of my head though.
