Is 3 x 3 Still Going To Be The Standard for Wave 2 and Beyond…..

So naturally after purchasing all my Wave 2 preorders and pimping out my set the next decision is to get a play mat. Im thinking just a basic felt job from Walmart for now til FFG releases their own mats (crosses fingers).  The question is 3x3 is the standard but with the new larger ships will the playing area be made larger for scenarios involving those ships (not squad building pt games)?  And with rumors of Star Destroyers on the horizon jeez play area can get out of hand quickly.  Just wondering if anyone has played with the new larger wave ships and if the play area was bumped up or if anyone has heard any rumors?

Pretty sure you'll be alright with 3 X 3 for a good while still. As long as you keep to 100 point squads I doubt you'll have a problem.

As for Star Destroyers you won't see any of them in scale that's for sure so I wouldn't worry about that.

a Corellian Corvette is about the biggest ship that can fit on a table in scale.  An Escort Frigate would be 3'7" long.

The vast amount of options on the cheap are well cataloged here and on other fan sites.  I do not see tournaments changing base game play size just do to the nature of tournament games.  That said many of us are gaming scenarios from the canton and other fan publications that call for larger playing areas.  The advantage with cloth is you can adjust the size as needed. Just drap the excess off the end of the table.  I have several "tiles" that are 18 inches by 12 inches that I use with a black starlight background that I can configure in several different layout.

I think 100 pts squads fair best on 3x3 even with the big ships. (I have a Falcon, so I've tried it).

At 150 pts and up, I think 4x4 is going to be standard, maybe even 5 x 5 in 250 pts plus games.

I have been thinking of building some 2x2 modular boards.

I think it don't be changed until we have ships from others sizes, until now it works very good, even wityh Wave 2, and games foer 200 points, greettings.

I'm thinking 300' x 160' would just about perfect to give Star Destroyers some manuever room. Of course moving a 19'+ mini across that distance with the Straight 1 template might make for slightly longer games.

Hey, I think an Interdictor would be under 7'. Of course, I'm not sure that BattleFoam makes trays that would fite either of them…

I haven't heard rumors on AFM, but I've made my latest playmat from 2 3'x5' pieces of replacement car upholstry from a local Big Lots. It gives me either 6'x5' or 3'x5' or 3'x3' with some nice space on each side for cards/tokens/etc.
