It also doesn't help that it is still a game that involves dice. For example, last night I played a game against a TIE swarm, with Biggs with R2F2.
During the first round of engagement, Biggs lost shields at long range against fire from two TIEs (admittedly the TIEs were benefitting from close proximity with Howlrunner). The other 5 TIEs were out of range. During the second round of engagement, Biggs' pilot skill went to 0 from a critical, and he took an additional damage - all from fire from 3 TIEs (the others couldn't draw line of sight to him) through an asteroid. During the third round of engagement, a stray shot hit Biggs, killing him, from the only TIE that could draw line of sight to him.
A few of those shots were at short range, but I couldn't roll an evade to save Biggs' life.
And that's simply the way the dice can go in this game.
