That's awesome! I'm doing the same right now with http://skeletonkeygames.rpgnow.com/product/106202/Warscapes%3A-Star-Base-Trench-Run and am thinking about going with 3D tiles later on.
Can you show and/or describe how you support the surface areas? Also do you have a link or a graphic of the exhaust port?
L clips and T Clips connect the foam boards - the whole deal can be disassembled and folded flat. Exhaust port is a gogle pic.

For a 3D trench board, I'd want to have some pieces of clear plastic to lay across the top of the trench, so ships can be set on top of the plastic when flying above it.

Ive already thought of that… Cutting it into 10" x 2" strips
