and a second view.

I very much have doubts about the viability of ever seeing any ships larger than the Correllian corvette

Nice pics and great model!  It may not work well in the game, but kudos for a job well done!

i wish it was a model of some sort it would have saved me about 40 hours of building and sculpting time not to mention materials.

all hand made. from styrofoam, plastic, mat board, paper, sheet styrene, decorative tapes, and wood, as well as brass, and liquid latex…

was a big job but fun to do and pretty satisfying result

heres one more pic

Wow, that Nebulon-B is outstanding.   You really did some great work scratch building it.   I had thought about doing the same before I found the Corellian Corvette on Ebay.

I agree though that any larger ships would just get silly.  I do like how you have a flat metal stand which would allow for the figure stands to be put over it, so you don't loose any game playing space.

I also think you gaming table is oustanding.  I really like the background you have there.   Did you make that as well?

Now that is impressive!  I really like how that looks.

However (and no offense because that is a totally cool model) I think this shows why you would not want capital ships out of scale.  We clearly see X-wings and Y-wings zipping around a Neb-B in ESB.  With the half size Neb-B they just do not look right on the table.  If it was something else that we had not seen direct comparesons of, it might be better, but in this case it seems obvious to me.  I really hope that if FFG makes bigger ships that they keep them to scale.

Still, that does not take away from how awesome that Neb-B looks.

Thanks,
Duncan

In looking into it, a true scale Nebulon-B Frigate would be about 37" long, which is the length of an entire gaming table.  Might work as a piece of scenery or an objective in larger scale games.

It seems that what everyone is kind of looking for would be a completely separate game using Capital Ships.  Fighter squadrons  or even Medium ships would be represented by tokens and you'd end up with something that would be similar to Firestorm Armada.  You'd be looking at models that would be in the price range of the Medium ships that are coming out ($25 to $30 each) with some truly big models (i.e. Executor or some of the big Mon Calamari ships) that might range up near $50.  It would be less of a dog-fight, certainly and  much more broadside shooting with complements of smaller ships and fighters to harry enemy ships.  FASA produced a game in the late 80s called Renegade Legion: Leviathan that was a pretty good capital ship game.

So..bottom line:  I think it should be a seperate game with models that could be in scale and rules that would account for the more cumbersome movement of BIG ships.  You could keep the idea of different pilots (crews in the case of capital ships), weapon load-outs snd upgrades very easily, and keep the idea of statistic chits on the bases to maintain a uniform look among the family of games.

Just an idea….feel free to discuss!  (But be nice to me, huh?)  ;)

I've been throwing around some rules for a scenario of attacking a capital ship in my head. The model itself would be stationary and a player would assault it while another defends it. Give it a new firing range template for turbolasers that go from range 3 to 7, with a dead zone of 1 and 2, making it so fighters could get in on it and be safe, and forcing it to use a fighter escort to protect that dead zone. If it was included in a point buy, then maybe anti starfighter weaponry as an upgrade…

Then, it'd have a shield generator that could be targeted in order to bring down the shields in order to damage the ship itself. I'd have a few well defended/hard to hit weak points on it where standard weapons could score damage, and secondary weapons like missiles and proton torpedoes could score damage anywhere on it as long as the shields were down.

If that seems to work out, then you could do other scenarios such as defend the capitol ship X number of turns while it repairs its hyperdrive/shields/etc.

Once I get a couple more friends into the game, I'll try it out.

something like that may work out with that great looking nebulon frigate that is pictured in this thread. I believe Wedge referred to it as a ":medical" frigate in RotJ. Have the scenario be something like its hyperdrive was taken out and needs to be repaired. Have the Rebel player use two X-wings and the Imperial player use 4 or 5 TIEs. Come up with a number of turns it will take to "repair" the hyperdrive and escape, before the TIEs blow it to pieces, killing all the injured soldiers

Hello, you must be a miniature gamer, because it is a true statement when you say that the scale is an issue; however, I have a suggestion. When you purchase, let us say a star destroyer, you should also get a scaled down version of a few tie fighter squdrons. Fighters should be based say 3 per base, and each base is a squadron. Therefore, fighters fit into the scale, and game play will focuse on large ship combat as well as fighter combat. This gives players options to fight, fighter skirmishes using the current scale, or large battles with the added squadron rules.. I'm sure fantasy flight could come up with fighter squadron rules, while keeping a similar combat system for large capital ships. I have been toying with starship rules for a while and have come across some that showed promise only to fall short with ultra complexity. Fantasy flight you are onto something, don't let it pass you up. Every star wars fan has been waiting for fast and fun star ship game that involves star destroyers. Every other attempt has fallen sadly short…

Best Regards,

Doc J

Re: Scaling cap ships, the X-Wing is listed in various sources as 12.5m long. Thanks to said sources listing the length of the Millennium Falcon at just over 27 m, and the Star Wars art book (published 1977), the length of a Star Destroyer comes out to just over 665m. That would make an in-scale Star Destroyer about 53.2 times the length of an X-Wing. The models they're using are what, about 12.cm long (1/100 scale, same as Flames of War!)? That would make a Star Destroyer in scale about 6.65m long (21.6'). Which dwarfs the 2.3m scratch-built Star Destroyer that was at GenCon in 1992; they were using Galoob Micro-machine fighters swirling around it. I so wanted to steal that big ship, but there were too many DisneyWorld security employees hanging around it (they were the guys who built it).

Actually, the Millenium Falcon has morphed quite a bit over the years…current length is 34.37 meters.

The models are 1/270 scale.  That would make an Imperial-class Star Destroyer 5.9 meters long in scale.  So pretty big.  I don't think Plano makes a transport box that could accomodate a model that size.

BTW, the Galoob MicroMachines X-Wings are really close to the scale of the FFG X-Wings.

Great board and nebulon. What did you use for the elevating sticks ? Are those cocktail straws?
