Slave Market

So, the slave market...
In a game so short the first player token often doesn't make it all the way around, is the slave market really fair? It just seems like an advantage more likely to go to players with higher priority in the turn order. And, there's no other disadvantage for going first that evens that out enough in my opinion.
Does the expansion change this?
