2 different dice types

I noticed the dice roller sometimes rolls normal numeric dice, but sometimes shows blank dice with elder signs on the success faces. What determines what dice is rolled, is there an option to let me choose which one?

If you press on the screen with 2 fingers, it changes between numeric (dots) & Elder Signs.

So far I've only been tapping with 1 finger, and sometimes it swaps style randomly.
